Georgia Highlands dropped a softball doubleheader Tuesday at Chattanooga State falling 5-1 and 10-1. The host Lady Tigers outhit the Chargers 13 to 4 in the opener and 11 to 4 in the second game. Haley Overton had two hits including a double for Georgia Highlands in the opening loss. Malone Adridge had a hit and one RBI. Madison Dennis added one hit in the first game. In Game 2, Bradey Tharp contributed a double and scored a run. Annsley Todd finished with one hit and one RBI. Haley Robinson and Audrey Johnson added one hit each. Chattanooga State, ranked No. 9 in the NJCAA poll, improved to 19-3 on the season and completed a five-game season sweep of Georgia Highlands. The Chargers (6-16) are scheduled to host Cleveland State CC Thursday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Star’s Field.

The Woodland Wildcats grabbed a 5-0 lead through four innings Monday night and held on down the stretch to defeat visiting Coahulla Creek, 5-4. Woodland scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run triple by Ayden Ray. The Wildcats later added three more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Julian Wright and an RBI single by Jacob Gravett. The Colts made it interesting late with two runs in the fifth inning on a pair of hits and two Woodland defensive miscues. They then narrowed the margin to 5-4 on a Tanner Headrick two-RBI double in the top of the seventh with one out. Woodland pitcher Conner Stermer (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 2BB, 2K) was able to end the late Coahulla Creek rally with a strikeout and a groundout to close out the final inning. Wright (5 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 0BB, 6K) started on the mound for the Wildcats and picked up the pitching win. Rowan Billings (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) recorded three outs in the sixth inning. Headrick had three hits and three RBIs for Coahulla Creek (3-5). For Woodland, Ray finished with three hits and two RBIs. Wright had two hits with two RBIs. Jakiyon Porter also contributed two hits. Chase Carson, Jackson Rutlege (double), Billings (double), and Gravett (RBI) added one hit each. Woodland (6-4) hosts North Cobb Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. and will entertain East Paulding Friday at 5:55 p.m.

Three runs early and three runs late were enough to lift the Dalton Catamounts past the visiting Cass Colonels Monday night, 6-1. Dalton took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added insurance with three runs in the sixth to secure the win. Cass scored a run in the top of the second on a Todd Gaddy RBI single to narrow the margin to 3-1 at the time. Starting pitcher Carson Hill (5 IP, 3R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K) was tagged with the pitching loss despite not allowing an earned run. He struck out four. Chase Botts (0.1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 2BB) and Devan Hutchinson (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H) both pitched in relief for the Colonels. Cayden Roberts had two hits for Cass. Chase Botts and Andrew Middleton also added base hits. The Catamounts improved to 5-2 with their win. Cass (1-9) host Adairsville Thursday and Sonoraville Friday. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. starts.

PRO BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS — Raptors 905, NBA G League; Cartersville native; Newton HS) … Hagans started and played 32 minutes in a 125-118 road loss Sunday at the Maine Celtics. He posted 15 points, six assists, four steals and three rebounds in the defeat. COLLEGE BASKETBALL BRAXTON BENHAM — Berry College (Fr., Cass HS) … saw nine minutes of action in Berry's opening-round game in the NCAA Division-III tournament. He finished with two points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal in a 91-79 season-ending loss to Wabash last Friday in Atlanta. JUSTICE HAYES — South Georgia Tech (So., Cass HS) … Hayes and the Jets survived an overtime thriller with Georgia Highlands to win the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association tournament title. He scored just one total point in the semifinals (78-70 win last Friday over South Georgia at home) and finals (87-84 OT victory Saturday at GHC), but it was a big point. With 31 seconds to go in regulation during the championship, Hayes hit the second of two free throws to give South Georgia Tech a 79-74 lead. It proved vital, as the Chargers scored five points in 11 seconds to send the game to an extra session before the Jets emerged victorious. South Georgia Tech will face South Plains College in the first round of the NJCAA national championship at 11 a.m. Eastern March 15 in Hutchinson, Kansas. T.J. HORTON — Georgia Highlands College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … saw time but didn't record any counting stats in the championship game setback. He did manage to post four points and three rebounds in an 85-77 semifinal victory over Albany Tech last Friday at home. TENNIS HOUSTON MEDLOCK — Piedmont College (Sr., Adairsville HS) … won both sets of his Line 5 singles match by identical 6-2 final scores but fell 8-6 in Line 1 doubles action during a 6-3 team win over Pfeiffer Sunday at home. EMILY SURCEY — Arkansas State University (Fr., Cass HS) … did all she could to try to carry Arkansas State to victory in a Sun Belt Conference matchup against Texas State last Friday at home. The former Colonels star produced the Red Wolves' lone singles win — a breezy 6-2, 6-1 match on Line 3. She also teamed with Rebecca Brody for a 6-2 Line 3 doubles triumph. Arkansas State also won on Line 1 doubles to secure the team point, but it wasn't enough in a 5-2 defeat. BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont College (So., Woodland HS) … rallied for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 win on Line 2 singles in the victory over Pfeiffer. TRACK AND FIELD BILL ARCHER — University of Montevallo (Fr., Cartersville HS) … In opening up his outdoor track and field season, Archer placed 19th in the 5000-meter run during the Icebreaker Duals this past Saturday at Berry. SOFTBALL BELLA CARNES — Georgia College (So., Woodland HS) … made a start in right field and had a sacrifice hit in the Bobcats’ 10-1 loss Saturday at Lander University. Georgia College dropped all three Peach Belt Conference games over the weekend series and slipped to 8-13 on the season. The Bobcats host Young Harris Friday and Saturday in another three game conference series. MORGAN COOPER — Columbus State University (Fr., Woodland HS) … appeared as a pinch hitter Sunday in the Cougars’ only loss during a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at home against 9th-ranked North Georgia. CSU (9-9, 2-1) plays Mississippi College Wednesday in Mobile before traveling to St. Augustine for a three-game conference series with Flagler College Saturday and Sunday. SADYE JOHNSON — University of North Georgia (Fr., Adairsville HS) … started the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Columbus State going 0-for-1 with two walks at the plate. UNG (15-8, 1-2) hosts a doubleheader with Alabama-Huntsville Wednesday and entertains a three-game Peach Belt Conference series with Augusta University Friday and Saturday. HANNAH TODD — University of Houston (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … made pitching appearances in four of five Cougars’ games this past weekend as Houston went 3-2 at the Boyd Gaming Classic in Las Vegas. In a start Friday, Todd allowed only one, unearned run on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts but received no decision. The Cougars went on, however, to knock off 7th-ranked Washington 5-4. The right-hander retired the only batter she faced Saturday in the final inning of an 11-7 win over New Mexico State and worked a scoreless inning of relief in a 10-4 loss to Washington. Sunday, Todd again did not allow an earned run in a 2-2/3 innings start. She allowed three unearned runs on three hits and two walks during a 5-0 loss to UNLV. Houston (9-11) hosts a doubleheader Friday with Boise State and a three-game series Friday and Saturday with Northwestern State. ALEXA VARNER — Shorter University (So., Adairsville HS) … made a start at second base Saturday in a 2-1 extra inning home loss to West Alabama. Varner was 0-for-3 at the plate but had four assists and a putout defensively. Shorter lost all three games in the weekend conference series. The Hawks (4-17, 1-8 Gulf South Conference) plays a three game conference series at West Georgia Friday and Saturday. BASEBALL JAKE GOOCH — Central Alabama CC (So., Cartersville HS) … went 4-for-7 with a solo home run and four RBIs in a doubleheader last Thursday at Lurleen B. Wallace CC. The Trojans (8-9) have a home-and-home, four-game series with Shelton State Thursday and Saturday. LOGAN MARTIN — Sewanee - University of the South (Jr., Cartersville HS) … made a seven inning start Saturday but did not receive a decision as the Tigers fell 4-3 at Birmingham-Southern College. Martin gave up three earned runs on seven hits, two walks (one intentional), and one hit batsman. He struck out nine of the 30 batters he faced. Sewanee (2-8) lost all three games in the series at 3rd-ranked Birmingham-Southern. The Tigers are scheduled to play six games Thursday through the following Tuesday at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida. MASON McBEE — Coastal Alabama - South CC (Fr., Cartersville HS) … earned a save last Friday by retiring the final five outs of a 7-6 win at Wallace State-Hanceville CC. McBee allowed three hits in the scoreless appearance and struck out one facing ten batters. The Sun Chiefs (7-9-1) have a four-game, home-and-home series with Wallace State-Dothan Thursday and Saturday. SCOTTY SMITH — Covenant College (Fr., Woodland HS) … the right hand pitcher was inserted in the seventh inning Friday of an eventual 8-4 loss to Ferrum College (Virginia) in a game played at the Tennessee Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tennessee. Smith entered with his team trailing 7-1 and retired the final five outs. He walked one and yielded one unearned run. The Scots (5-6) travel to Bob Jones University (South Carolina) for a three-game series Friday and Saturday. STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Jr., Cass HS) … starting at third base, Spell was 2-for-8 at the plate as the Mountain Lions completed a three-game conference series sweep at Georgia College. He had a double, three walks, and scored two runs during the series. Young Harris (13-5, 3-0 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Carson-Newman Tuesday and returns to conference play Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series at Augusta University. PRESTON WELCHEL — Coastal Alabama-South CC (So., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-16 with a double and one RBI in a four-game series last Friday and Saturday at Wallace State-Hanceville CC. The Sun Chiefs (7-9-1) have a four-game, home-and-home series with Wallace State-Dothan CC Thursday and Saturday. DAVIS WILLIAMS — Birmingham-Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … picked up his second pitching win of the season Saturday with a three-inning relief appearance and a 4-3 win over visiting Sewanee-University of the South. Williams retired the final nine outs allowing no runs on just one hit and one walk. Sunday, he closed out the ninth inning allowing a pair of unearned runs on two hits with two strikeouts in a game the Panthers won 12-10. 7th-ranked BSC (10-2, 3-0 Southern Athletic Association) host Emory University Tuesday and have a three-game series at Rhodes College in Memphis Friday and Saturday. JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-8 with a walk and a sacrifice in three losses during a Peach Belt Conference series at Flagler College last weekend. Augusta (6-10, 0-3) hosts The College of Saint Rose (New York) Tuesday before Young Harris College visits for a three-game conference series Saturday and Sunday. ZACH WILSON — Penn State-Greater Allegheny CC (So., Woodland HS) … made an eighth inning pinch hitting appearance and was inserted defensively at first base Saturday during a 10-8 loss to CC of Allegheny County. Cartersville High School’s Game Day Competition Cheer team finished fifth in the Class 5A/6A Division Saturday at the 2022 GHSA finals. Cartersville qualified for the finals with 205.500 points and was fourth in qualifying. In the finals, Cartersville placed fifth in the classification. Lee County won the competition ahead of runner-up Lanier. South Effingham placed third and Calhoun was fourth. Carrollton, Effingham County, Buford, and Wayne County rounded out the finals standings. Woodland was 15th in the preliminaries and did not qualify for the finals.

Garrett Geros, a 2018 Cartersville High School graduate, earned the silver medal in the men's snowboard cross SB-LL2 event in the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games. In qualifying, Geros produced the second-fastest time to earn one of the top seeds in the 16-person bracket. In the four-person races that followed, the 22-year-old won his quarterfinal, placed runner-up in his semifinal race and finished just behind Finland's Matti Suur-Hamari in the final. Geros only started training on a full-time basis less than four years ago. The second-place result in his first Paralympics also significantly bested his previous high finish at a major competition, having come in seventh in the event at the 2019 world championships. At the most recent world championships, Geros placed ninth in snowboard cross and 12th in banked slalom. Geros has additional competitions remaining at the 2022 Games. A member of Adaptive Action Sports, Geros qualifies for the LL2 events after having suffered severe damage to both of his lower limbs, including significant amputation of his left leg, following a single-vehicle accident as a 16-year-old.

Georgia Highlands started the season with 16 straight wins before dropping two games February 25-26 to Wabash Valley College. Since then, the Chargers have reeled off four straight wins including Sunday’s 4-2 win at Chattahoochee Valley. Three GHC pitchers — Gage Vailes, Eric Moore, and Conner Perry — combined to scatter five Pirates’ hits and struck out ten in the road victory. The only Chattahoochee Valley runs came in the second inning off a two-run home run by Brayden Pelkey. Parker Poteet had three hits for the Chargers and Conner Todaro had two hits including a solo home run in the seventh inning to pace the Georgia Highlands offense. Zayd Brannigan (double, RBI), Mick Moody (RBI), David Smith, and Ben Olson added one hit each. Chattahoochee Valley falls to 6-11 on the season with the loss. Georgia Highlands (20-2) travels to USC Salkehatchie for a Tuesday doubleheader and will host a three-game series with Macomb CC (Michigan) Sunday and Monday.

The Cartersville girls and the Cass boys came away winners Friday night in the head to head region soccer matchups between the Hurricanes and Colonels. With a hat trick of goals by Abbey Craig, the Lady Canes cruised to a 6-0 win at Cochran Stadium. Then, following a 1-1 tie that remained knotted after overtime periods, Cass won a PK shootout 4-3 to edge the Cartersville boys. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 6, CASS 0 The Lady Canes led 2-0 at halftime and added four more goals in the second half Friday night at Cass for a 6-0 win. Abbey Craig scored a hat trick with Hattie Williams, Ansley Holton, and Jocelen Fernandez added one goal each for Cartersville. Holton, Macy Nicklas, and Williams assisted the Craig goals. Holton added an assist on the Williams goal and Craig also finished with a pair of assists. The Lady Canes (3-5-1, 1-0) host Heritage-Catoosa Monday at 5:30 p.m. Cass (2-7-1, 0-2) plays at Pickens Monday, also at 5:30 p.m. CASS BOYS 2, CARTERSVILLE 1 (4-3 shootout) The Colonels and Canes each scored second half goals in regulation Friday night at Cochran Stadium sending the Region 7-5A game to overtime knotted 1-1. Christian Villela scored the Cass goal in regulation. Marvel Velasquez found the net for Cartersville. Following a pair of scoreless overtimes, the Cass boys won a shootout 4-3 to secure the match victory. Juan Pajarito made the deciding penalty kick for the Colonels. Cartersville (4-5-1, 0-1) hosts Heritage-Catoosa Monday night at 7:30 p.m. in non-region action. Cass (7-3-1, 1-1) travels to Pickens Monday night for a 7:30 p.m. non-region kickoff. WOODLAND GIRLS 3, HIRAM 2 The Lady Cats held on in the second half to defeat the Lady Hornets at Hiram, 3-2. Woodland led 2-0 at the intermission and added a second half goal to secure the region win. The loss dropped the Hiram girls to 0-9 on the season and 0-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (5-3-2, 1-1) returns to the pitch next Friday at Calhoun. WOODLAND BOYS 2, HIRAM 1 (PK win) The Woodland boys improved to 5-3-3 on the season and evened their region record to 1-1 with a 2-1 win Friday at Hiram. The Hornets slipped to 0-7-1 and 0-2 in Region 7-5A. Chris Sanchez scored the goal for Woodland in regulation. Neither team scored in the overtime periods and the Wildcats picked up the victory on penalty kicks.

The 2022 Rome Track and Field Invitational always features an outstanding field of competitors and this year’s event was no exception. The girls and boys teams from Woodland and Cartersville all competed Saturday with 21 other schools. The Alexander girls won the meet with 127.93 points ahead of Marietta (83.43) and Landmark Christian (80). The Lady Canes finished in a tie for 15th place and the Lady Cats were 20th. The Marietta boys won the 2022 Rome title with 120.5 points. Parkview (81) was second with Alexander (70) placing third. The Woodland boys placed 11th with Cartersville finishing 12th. The Cass girls placed third and the Cass boys were fourth Saturday at the 2022 Southeast Whitfield High School Track and Field Invitational. The Lady Colonels totaled 86.5 points and were third behind winner Calhoun (120) and Ridgeland (94). Host Southeast (65) and North Murray (63) rounded out the top five girls teams. The Adairsville girls were tenth in the 10-team field. Calhoun (123.25) also won the boys meet followed by Coahulla Creek (103.5). The next four teams were all within eight points of one another including Ridgeland (78), Cass (77.75), Southeast Whitfield (71.5), and Heritage-Catoosa (70) to complete the top six teams. Adairsville (56) placed seventh in the 11-team field.
