Following a week-plus on the injured list due to knee tendinitis, Cartersville High graduate Sam Howard made his return to the Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen this past week. The left-handed hurler went right back into his role of pitching in nearly every other game for the Pirates. Entering Monday's game against Atlanta, Howard had pitched in 36 of 74 possible games for Pittsburgh — not including the nine he missed while on the 10-day IL. Away from the diamond, former Canes hoops standout A.J. Mosby wrapped up his first season in The Basketball League. Mosby's Shreveport Mavericks suffered a first-round sweep, but he continued to impress with 41 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in the series. PRO BASEBALL Sam Howard (Pittsburgh Pirates; Cartersville) — Howard returned from the injured list and pitched two total innings across three outings last week. After allowing an earned run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning June 30 at Colorado, the southpaw posted a pair of scoreless outings against Milwaukee. Howard recorded one out in a brief July 1 cameo, and the former Georgia Southern standout struck out two in a full inning of work two days later. Connor Justus (Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Miami Marlins organization; Cartersville) — Justus finished 2-for-11 with a walk and a run driven in across three starts for Jacksonville in a series last week at Memphis. Anthony Seigler (Hudson Valley Renegades, New York Yankees organization; Cartersville) — The former first-round pick went 1-for-10 last week in three appearances against Jersey Shore. Seigler's lone hit was a double, and he also drew a walk. PRO BASKETBALL A.J. Mosby (Shreveport Mavericks; Cartersville) — The Mavericks suffered a two-game sweep at the hands of the Houston Push in the opening round of The Basketball League playoffs. Houston earned a slim 102-99 victory in Game 1 Thursday on the road before rolling to a 127-98 win in Game 2 Saturday at home. Spencer Fields of Kingston completed the AJC Peachtree Road Race 10K this holiday weekend in 20th place out of the 24,328 runners participating in 2021. The Peachtree was competed over two race days this year plus there were another 8,000 runners who took part virtually as a result of COVID-19 protocols. Fields, a Rhodes College graduate, was also the top runner for the state of Georgia. The 23-year-old completed the 6.2 miles in 30:35 averaging 4:55 per mile. Atlanta’s Chris Marco (26, 31:15) finished 23rd overall as the next best Georgia finish. Sam Chelanga (36, Niceville, Florida) finished two seconds ahead of Fred Huxham (25, Ross, California) and Clayton Young (27, Provo, Utah) to win the 2021 Atlanta event. Chelanga finished the course in 28:43.

Just weeks away from the opening of preseason camp, No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence has signed a four-year, $36.8 million contract that includes $24.1 million in guaranteed money and the standard fifth-year option according to a report from Adam Schefter. The signing deal was finalized Sunday and Lawrence will be present from Day 1 of the Jacksonville Jaguars preseason camp. The deal includes no offset language and his signing bonus will be paid within 15 business days. Offset language relates to what happens to a player's salary if he's cut during the first four years of his career, while he's still playing on his rookie contract. The majority of his compensation is aligned for 2022, 2023, and 2024 in a roster bonus. Those funds are earned if Lawrence is on the 90-man roster on the third day after each mandatory camp reporting date. He also earns the roster bonus even if on the active non-football injury or illness list. The 21-year-old quarterback had a brilliant career at Clemson where he threw for 10,098 yards with 108 total touchdowns and just 17 interceptions. Most NFL experts point to him as a generational quarterback prospect. Therefore, there’s no reason to think he would not fulfill his entire rookie contract. The 6-6 signal caller is a winner. He has won championships at both the high school and college levels and has only four total losses during that span. He won two state titles, three ACC titles, and a national championship. But business is business and new Jaguars’ GM Trent Baalke and new head coach Urban Meyer obviously took every precaution in their negotiations. Lawrence will seek to become the third quarterback taken No. 1 overall since 1970 to lead his team to the playoffs in his first season. John Elway, who was taken first overall in 1983 by the Baltimore Colts somewhat accomplished the feat, although he didn’t play for the team that drafted him nor was he a full-time starter. Elway was traded to the Denver Broncos following the draft after threatening publicly to play baseball if Baltimore drafted him. Baltimore was one of the league’s worst teams at the time. Elway, who had been drafted by the New York Yankees, was traded for offensive lineman Chris Hinton, backup QB Mark Herrmann, and a first-round pick in the 1984 draft. Denver head coach Dan Reeves opened the season with Elway as the starter, but switched to veteran Steve DeBerg early in the season. A shoulder injury to DeBerg forced Elway back into the starting role toward the end of the season and the team finished 9-7. DeBerg again was chosen to start the Broncos wild card playoff loss in Seattle with Elway relieving him in the fourth quarter. Andrew Luck of the Indianpolis Colts is the only quarterback taken first overall since 1970 to have full responsibility at QB and lead his team to a winning record and the playoffs as a rookie. Luck started all 17 games as the Colts finished 11-5 in the regular season and lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the wild card round of the playoffs. Expectations remain extremely high for Lawrence, but guarded based on history. According to ESPN Stats & Information. there have been 14 quarterbacks taken first overall in the NFL draft wince 2000. Those QBs have averaged only 3.8 wins, 13 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions, and had a 56% completion rate as starters in their rookie seasons . Luck holds the rookie record for passing yards with 4,374 and only four other rookies have thrown for more than 4,000 yards. Those marks seem highly attainable for the Jags’ new QB. With a 17th regular-season game added this year and current NFL rules favoring the passing game, a healthy Lawrence will have every opportunity to threaten many NFL rookie marks in Meyer’s offensive scheme. "I want to just master the offense," Lawrence told ESPN’s Michael DiRocco last week. "I want to have complete control and know everything and be comfortable. You can't really play free and play really well if you don't know what you're doing. Obviously, I have to be ready and I'm going to do everything I can to ensure that that is the case. I'm excited to get started."

The Bartow County-based D.U.K.E. 2028 boys basketball team won the 2021 Teammate Basketball 5th Grade Boys National Championship June 24-27 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. D.U.K.E. 2028 won all six of its games in the tournament that included a field of 17 teams from multiple states. D.U.K.E. 2028 was 3-0 in Pool C with wins over NLPB 204 (North Carolina), Dews Elite Hurricanes (Ohio), and Beach Xplosion 2028 (Virginia) to qualify for the tournament’s Gold Bracket. The team then won three straight games in bracket play to win the national title. In the quarterfinal round of bracket play, the locals beat Team Fly 2028 (North Carolina) 44-33 before topping Team United (North Carolina) 40-22 in the semifinals. D.U.K.E. 2028 then rallied from nine points down with less than two minutes remaining in regulation of the championship game to send it to overtime. In the extra period, the Bartow-based squad pulled away for a six-point win, 58-52, over GESI Young Ballerz (Georgia). Kaiden Kent, Kayden Blackwell, and Trace Hawkins all hit three-pointers in the final two minutes to force OT in the title game. Blackwell and Case Shropshire had key steals in the sequence while Blaine Groce was credited for setting a clutch screen. Shropshire then knocked down an opening three from behind the arc to open the overtime surge.

ATHLETES BEYOND BARTOW Former Cartersville High standout Anthony Seigler had a dynamic week at the plate for the Hudson Valley Renegades in the MiLB High Class A East, North Division while another former Hurricane in Major League Baseball, Sam Howard, was placed on the 10-day injured list for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In professional hoops action, Cartersville native A.J. Mosby wrapped up a rewarding regular season with the Shreveport Mavericks of The Basketball League and will now help lead his team in the first round of the playoffs later this week. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Pittsburgh Pirates (8th-year pro; Cartersville HS)… The Pirates placed Howard on the 10-day injured list June 20 with right knee tendinitis. The assignment came two days after the left-hand pitcher suffered his roughest outing of the season at home against the Cleveland Indians. It is believed the injury played a role in that appearance where he surrendered six runs while recording just two outs. Prior to the injury, Howard had posted a 2.45 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across his first 32 appearances out of the Pirates bullpen. Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczak told Mike Persak of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last Wednesday that he expected the former Cane and Georgia Southern Eagle to throw off the slope of a mound by the weekend. For the season, the 28-year-old is 2-2 in 33 relief appearances. He has worked 26.1 innings with a 4.44 ERA and 35 strikeouts. CONNOR JUSTUS — Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (6th-year pro; Miami Marlins organization; Cartersville HS)… made only two starts last week as the Shrimp hosted the Durham Bulls in a six-game series at home. The former Georgia Tech shortstop was 0-for-7 in those two games dropping his season batting average to .197. Jacksonville (26-20) currently third in the Triple-A East Southeast Division, travels to west Tennessee to play the Memphis Redbirds Tuesday through Sunday. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (4th-year pro; New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS)… it started as a potential break out week for the Yankees No. 6 overall rated prospect, but it ended with some concern Sunday when Seigler was hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance. The switch hitting catcher ultimately got up under his own power but was pulled from the game for precautionary reasons. In four other starts last week, the 22-year-old went 6-for-18 with four doubles, a walk-off grand slam, two walks, a sacrifice fly, and 10 RBIs. The high performance week lifted Seigler’s batting average over the .200-mark for the first time this season as the Renegades won their eighth straight game before the streak was snapped Sunday. Seigler, who was activated from the injured list for the first time this season on June 1, has now appeared in 18 games in 2021. Hudson Valley (30-17) finished the week 5-1 at the Wilmington Blue Rocks and continue to lead the High-A East North Division by 4.5 games over the Orioles’ Aberdeen Iron Birds. The Renegades play a six game series Tuesday through Sunday at the Jersey Shore Blue Claws. PRO BASKETBALL A.J. MOSBY — Shreveport Mavericks (3rd year pro; Cartersville HS)… scored 17 points with nine assists, seven rebounds, and two steals in the Mavs’ final regular season game victory over the Midtown Prestige. Mosby was 6-for-10 from the floor including 4-of-4 from outside the arc. The Mavericks closed out the regular season with three straight wins to finish with a 17-7 record. The former Alcorn State standout led his team in scoring and finished the regular season just outside The Basketball League’s top ten with a 24.6 points per game average. He was the team’s leader and fourth in the 29-team league in assists (6.7 apg) and eighth overall in three pointers made. Mosby also led the Mavericks in field goal percentage (55.2%), free throw percentage (81.3%), and steals (1.7 spg). Shreveport will now face the Houston Push Thursday and Saturday at the Centenary Gold Dome in the opening round of The Basketball League playoffs.

Following a 2021 season that saw Cartersville make another playoff run and Cass reach the Class 5A state playoffs, the Daily Tribune News has announced its annual All-County baseball team. The Canes finished 27-10 overall, placed runner-up in Region 7-AAAAA and reached the Class 5A state quarterfinals. Cass (6-22) also reached the postseason after ending up fourth in the same region winning a head-to-head tie-breaker with county rival Woodland (9-19) to qualify. Bartow County Little League 12U won the third and deciding game with Cartersville Little League Thursday night at Dean Field in Rockmart to capture the 2021 Georgia Little League District 1 championship. Bartow County defeated Cartersville in their first meeting Sunday 12-2. That forced Cartersville into a rematch with Rockmart in the elimination round. Cartersville advanced to the finals with a second tournament win over Rockmart setting up Thursday’s finals with Bartow County in the double-elimination tournament. Needing two wins Thursday, Cartersville took the first step and handed Bartow their only loss in the tournament with a 4-2 win. In the nightcap, however, Bartow pitchers Raiden Sexton and McCayden Hufstetler combined for 16 strikeouts and a 6-0 one-hitter for a shutout to capture the district crown. CARTERSVILLE 4, BARTOW COUNTY 2 Clint Hosea tossed a complete game for Cartersville Little League 12U scattering six hits while striking out six. He also went 1-for-3 at the plate. Devon Beavers had two hits for Cartersville and Payton Paul added one hit. Drew Nida went 3-for-3 in the opener for Bartow County. Rush Faulk, Drazen Jones, and Hayden Miller added one hit each. Jones, who worked 3-2/3 innings on the mound, and Matt Zander combined for ten strikeouts. Zander pitched the final inning and two-thirds. BARTOW COUNTY 6, CARTERSVILLE 0 Bartow County carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning and secured their victory by posting four runs in the frame. The Bartow County 10U baseball team won its second straight game at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association State Tournament Wednesday in Bainbridge, defeating Grady County 11-5. The win advances Bartow 10U to the final three of the state tournament. The locals will now square off with the only other unbeaten team remaining, Pooler, at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. The Bartow/Pooler winner will reach the championship round on Friday needing just one more win for the state title. The loser must play an elimination game Thursday afternoon. In Bartow’s win Wednesday, Cade McCorkle picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Noah Rogers. McCorkle scattered six hits and one walk to allow two earned runs (four total). He fanned four. Cartersville Gold 8U fell to tournament host Gainesville, 16-12. Gainesville led 6-2 through three innings and built a 14-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the fifth. Cartersville rallied for seven runs in the fifth to make the score 14-10, but got no closer. Cartersville finished with 22 hits in the game. RJ Perkins and Jon Ryder Myers had three hits each. The Bartow County Little League 12U baseball team moved into the championship round of the Georgia District 1 Tournament with a 12-2 win over Cartersville Little League in five innings Tuesday night at Hamilton Crossing Park. Bartow 12U is now one win away from winning the double-elimination tournament. Bartow opened the scoring with a six-run second inning then added on two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning. Cartersville pushed its two runs across in the third inning. A trio of Bartow pitcher combined for 14 strikeouts in the victory. Raiden Sexton fanned six in the first two innings. McCayden Hufstetler struck out five in the next two frames and Drazen Jones struck out the side in the fifth inning. Hufstetler finished with three hits including a pair of doubles. Jones had two hits. Rush Faulk contributed two hits including a homer while Zaylen Cochran, Drew Nida, Hayden Miller, and Sexton (triple) added base hits. For Cartersville, Dallen Fuqua had a second inning single and Zach Stiles added a base hit in the third inning. With the tournament now moving back to Dean Field in Rockmart, Cartersville plays an elimination game Wednesday night at 6 p.m. against Rockmart. Bartow 10U starting pitcher Houston Walden tossed a complete game, two hit shutout in the four inning victory. He walked five and struck out five. Meanwhile, the Bartow offense rattled off eleven hits in four frames and scored in every inning. Cade McCorkle led the Bartow 10U offense with three hits including a double and three RBIs. Maddox Koontz also had a three hit game with one RBI. Brodie Gardner had two hits including a double and two RBIs. Noah Rogers contributed a double and two RBIs. Jackson County answered with nine combined runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to build a 9-6 lead and held on to win by two. The recent rainy weather has created multiple changes in the Georgia District 1 Little League 12U schedule. The tournament was originally scheduled to begin this past Saturday at Dean Field in Rockmart, but the rains that have plagued the northwest portion of Georgia caused tournament officials to move that Saturday game to Hamilton Crossing Park's sports turf field on Sunday. Cartersville 12U routed Rockmart in that game 16-1. The next game in the double-elimination event -- between Cartersville and Bartow County 12U -- was scheduled for Monday night back in Rockmart, but rains made the playing conditions unfavorable again and the game was postponed. According to Georgia District 1 Administrator Brenton Baggett, the Cartersville vs. Bartow game will now be played Tuesday night at the Hamilton Crossing Park field at 8 p.m. The winner will advance to the District 1 championship round needing only one more win to win the tournament. Tuesday night's loser falls to the loser's bracket to play Rockmart with that winner needing two wins in the championship round. In other action, the Bartow County 10U GRPA baseball team begins play tonight at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state tournament in Bainbridge. Bartow 10U, who won the District Five championship to qualify, is schedule to play District Three champ Crisp County Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. The other four teams at the six-team state tournament include host Bainbridge, District 2 champ Pooler, District 3 champ Grady County, and District 7 champ Habersham County.

For the season, Howard has a 2-2 record with a 4.44 ERA in 26-1/3 innings of work. He has 35 strikeouts and opponents have just a .165 batting average against him. He also scored two runs. Through 12 games with the Triple-A Shrimp, the infielder has a .222 batting average in 40 official at bats. Defensively, the 26-year-old has made only one error in 45 total chances at three different positions since moving up to Jacksonville. He has played shortstop, third base, and second base. MOSBY — Shreveport Mavericks (3rd year pro; Cartersville HS)… recorded a triple-double Saturday in the Mavericks 149-102 win over the Waco Royals. Mosby scored 24 points and had 13 assists and 11 rebounds in the win. He also added three steals and one blocked shot. In Thursday’s 116-110 loss to the Enid Outlaws, the 25-year-old scored 26 points and had five assists, five rebounds, and a pair of steals. Shreveport (15-7, third place in The Basketball League’s Central Division) has its final two games this week against Waco and the Midtown Prestige.
