  • Brumlow climbs leaderboard for top 12 finish at GSGA Men's Amateur Championship

    June 15, 2025 Bodie Brumlow of Cartersville tied for 12th at the 104th Georgia State Golf Association Men’s Amateur Championship, firing rounds of 75-72-67-72 at Atlanta Country Club in Marietta.  Brumlow, a rising junior at Cartersville High School, had one of the day's low rounds on Saturday to move well into the top twenty. The top 20 and ties earned an exemption into the 2025 Georgia Amateur at Ocean Forest Golf Club at Sea Island. Bo Blanchard of Columbus shot 71-67-67-67 and won the 2025 title by three shots over Milton’s Jack Schoenberger (71-69-66-69). Duluth's Carter Loflin, a rising senior on the University of Georgia golf team, finished third (68-67-73-69) and was two more shots back. R.B. Clyburn of Cartersville tied for 28th. He carded rounds of 68-73-72-82.

(GSGA Photo on Facebook) Two Cartersville golfers made the 36-hole cut on Friday at the 104th Georgia State Golf Association Men’s Amateur Championship held at Atlanta Country Club. R.B. Clyburn is 3-under-par (68-73) and tied for 11th at the midway point of the 72-hole championship, while Cartersville High rising junior Bodie Brumlow carded rounds of 75-72 (3-over-par) to clear the 36-hole hurdle by two shots. Sixty-four of the 144 players to start the event qualified to play the final 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday at the 7,101-yard, par 72 layout in Marietta.  Carter Loflin, a rising senior on the University of Georgia golf team, is the 36-hole leader at 9-under-par with rounds of 68 and 67. Stephen Behr (Atlanta), former champion, and Georgia Southern alum Brett Barron (Duluth) are one shot back. Bo Blanchard of Columbus (Augusta University) and Franco Castro of Atlanta are tied for fourth place and trail Loflin by three shots. Laine Frazier of Adairsville qualified for the event, but missed the cut after shooting 75-76 (7-over-par). The competition for the Robert H. Martin Trophy continues through Sunday.

  • Cartersville Purple 8U wins GRPA District 5 Coach Pitch title

    June 12, 2025 Cartersville 8U Purple Coach Pitch Baseball won the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District Five championship Wednesday night at Westside Park in Whitfield County by defeating Summerville in the title game 12-3. Cartersville 8U Purple went 4-0 to capture the title. They had earlier tournament wins over Summerville (3-0), Trion (13-0), and Gordon County (8-3). The team advances to the GRPA State Tournament on June 24-27. Cartersville Purple 8U will play the District 7 runner-up in the first round on Tuesday, June 24, at Westside Park in Whitfield County.

    June 9, 2025 Updates on local MiLB players for the week ending Sunday, June 8. MiLB MASON BARNETT — Las Vegas Aviators (Oakland A’s Triple-A affiliate; 4th-year pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … improved his season mark to 3-1 on June 3 with a five-inning pitching start and eventual 6-2 win at the Tacoma Raniers. He allowed one earned run on two hits and three walks while striking out four of 21 batters faced. After going 4-2 last week at Tacoma, the Aviators (38-24) entered the week with a 7-½ game lead over the Sacramento River Cats. This week, Las Vegas has a six-game home series against the Salt Lake Bees. LOGAN MARTIN — Quad Cities River Bandits (Kansas City Royals High-Class A affiliate; 3rd-year pro; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … was charged with a pitching loss in a three-inning start this past Sunday at the Peoria Chiefs. Martin gave up six earned runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out three of 18 batters faced in the 9-4 loss. The River Bandits (33-24) went 1-5 last week at Peoria, but entered the week with a one-half game lead over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the Midwest League West. Quad Cities has a six-game home series with the Beloit Sky Carp this week. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers Triple-A affiliate; 8th-year pro; Cartersville HS) … one of the hottest bats in Triple-A baseball, the 25-year-old hit safely in each of his games last week and has now hit safely in 24 of his previous 25 games dating back to May 2. Seigler went 8-for-19 in five games during the week, including two walks, three doubles, six runs scored, and four RBI. A pitch hit him, and he stole two bases. During his current stretch, the catcher/second baseman has raised his batting average from .208 to .307. For the season, he has six homers, 25 RBI, and has stolen 17 bases with an on-base percentage of .444. Nashville (38-24)  has a 3-½ game lead over the Indianapolis Indians in the International League’s West Division and visits the Norfolk Tides this week for a six-game series. COLLEGE SOFTBALL ANSLEY HIGHT — Reinhardt University (So, Cass HS) … in her first season with the Eagles after transferring from the University of Southern Mississippi, Hight was selected Second Team NAIA All-American in 2025 as a designated hitter. In 44 games, she hit .438 with 13 home runs, 62 RBI, and scored 30 runs. She was also the Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Year and helped lead Reinhardt to its first NAIA World Series appearance since 2014.

  • GRPA District Five softball and baseball tournaments continue across northwest Georgia

The Bartow County 8U Coach Pitch Softball team outlasted Rockmart 22-20 Tuesday night in an elimination game at Westside Park in Whitfield County. It secured a spot in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association State Tournament.  Bartow 8U Softball, one of three teams to advance from the District Five double-elimination tournament, plays Summerville on Wednesday night. To win the district title, the winner must defeat host Whitfield County twice in the finals.  Since the beginning of the tournament last Friday, Bartow 8U Softball has won over Calhoun (28-13), Trion (18-14), Rome (17-2), and Rockmart. Their lone loss was to Summerville last Saturday, 18-6.  The Cartersville 8U Coach Pitch Softball team finished fifth in the tournament, following a 24-23 loss to Rockmart on Monday night. The locals also won over Cedartown (20-1) and Calhoun (22-1). Their other loss was to Rome (23-9).  In Chattooga County, the Bartow County 12U Softball team was eliminated Tuesday night and placed fourth in District Five with an 11-5 loss to Murray County. The Bartow team had a 9-3 win over Rome in an earlier elimination game on Tuesday and had a previous 6-3 loss to Trion on Monday. Cartersville Purple 8U Coach Pitch Baseball has advanced to the GRPA District Five tournament championship round in Whitfield County. On Wednesday night, they will play the Gordon County/Summerville winner at Westside Park. Cartersville Purple 8U is the only unbeaten team remaining in the double-elimination tournament. To claim the district title, it must win one of two potential games in the finals. In the 10U baseball district tournament in Rome, Cartersville earned wins over Rome Blue (8-5) and Cedartown (13-7) Tuesday night at Lower Alto Park. Cartersville 10U will face the Dalton/Trion winner in a winner’s bracket game Wednesday night.  Bartow County 10U Baseball plays an elimination game against Rome Red on Wednesday evening. If it wins, it will play the Dalton/Trion loser in a second elimination game. The 10U District Five tournament continues through Saturday. The Bartow County 12U Baseball team finished third at the GRPA District Five tournament in Dalton, and Cartersville 12U placed fourth. Bartow 12U Baseball won three straight games last weekend before falling 21-4 to eventual district champion Summerville. Bartow’s second loss was 7-5 to runner-up Trion. The local team had wins over Dalton (16-2), Whitfield County (5-3), and Murray County (12-6) in the tournament. Cartersville 12U was eliminated on Tuesday night with a 5-4 loss to Trion. They finished the double-elimination tournament with a 4-2 record. Cartersville 12U’s wins were over LaFayette (15-0), Cedartown (16-1), Calhoun (16-4), and Murray County (15-7). They had an earlier 18-3 loss to Summerville.  The Bartow County 12U baseball team finished third at the GRPA District Five tournament in Dalton.   • Local softball, baseball teams battle in GRPA tournament action

    June 9, 2025 Several local youth softball and baseball teams representing the Cartersville and Bartow County Recreation Departments played over the weekend in District Five Georgia Recreation and Parks Association tournaments. In the 8U Coach Pitch Softball tournament at Westside Park in Whitfield County, Cartersville and Bartow County teams split their two games. They will continue in the double-elimination event on Monday night. Cartersville fell in the opening round to Rome 23-9, but bounced back for a 22-1 win in the loser’s bracket. Bartow County defeated Calhoun 28-13 in the first round last Friday, but lost an 18-6 decision in the second round on Saturday. Cartersville will face Cedartown on Monday in an elimination game, with the winner advancing to play Rockmart. Bartow County will play the Murray County/Trion winner on Monday, with the winner to meet Rome. The 10-team 8U softball tournament continues through Wednesday. The Bartow County 10U Machine Pitch softball team finished fourth at the District Five tournament in Trion. Bartow lost to eventual champion Murray County 20-10 in the second round last Thursday, defeated Trion 4-1 in an elimination game on Friday, but was eliminated in a 13-5 loss to Whitfield County on Saturday. Bartow’s 12U softball team begins play on Monday night against host Trion in their five-team double-elimination district tournament. The Bartow/Trion winner will square off with Murray County in a second game on Monday. The loser will play either Summerville or Rome in an elimination game. The 12U tournament continues in Trion through Thursday. Three local 8U Coach Pitch baseball teams have advanced to Monday action in the District Five tournament at Westside Park in Whitfield County. Cartersville Purple 8U and Cartersville Gold 8U remain unbeaten through the weekend, while Bartow County Green 8U remains in contention in the loser’s bracket.  Cartersville Purple 8U received a first-round bye and edged Summerville 3-0 in the second round on Saturday. Cartersville Gold 8U had a 21-5 win over Rome Red last Friday and defeated Cedartown 9-5 on Saturday. On Monday night, Cartersville Purple faces Trion, and Cartersville Gold will take on Gordon County. Bartow County Green 8U defeated Calhoun 14-10 last Friday before splitting two games on Saturday in the 15-team double-elimination tournament. Bartow Green, who has an elimination game Monday night against Summerville, dropped a 13-2 decision against Trion but eliminated Rome Red with a 16-8 victory in the loser’s bracket.  Bartow County Blue 8U finished ninth in the tournament with a 1-2 record. Bartow Blue lost its opening game to Dalton 6-3 last Friday, defeated Murray County 18-6 on Saturday, but fell 20-7 to Summerville later in the day. At the 11-team District Five 12U baseball tournament in Dalton, Bartow County is one of two teams remaining without a loss. Cartersville remains in contention for the district title with three wins in four games.  Bartow 12U has wins over Dalton (16-2), Whitfield County (5-3), and Murray County (12-6) in the first three rounds. Bartow is scheduled to tangle with Summerville Monday night at Heritage Point Park, with the winner earning a spot in the championship round on Tuesday. Cartersville 12U blanked LaFayette 15-0 last Thursday in the first round, but lost to Summerville 18-3 in Round 2. To advance, Cartersville won two elimination games last Friday — 16-1 over Cedartown and 16-4 over Calhoun. They face Murray County in an elimination game on Monday, with the winner playing another elimination game against the Rome/Trion survivor.  The 14-team 10U baseball tournament gets fully underway on Monday at Lower Alto Park in Rome. Bartow County lost an 8-3 decision to Summerville last Friday in the only game completed before Monday. On Tuesday, Bartow will play either Gordon County or Rome Red in an elimination game.  Cartersville 10U opens the tournament on Monday with two games. They play Rome Blue in the first round and will follow against either Murray County or Cedartown. The winners of those two games will meet in the second round. The losers must play an elimination game.  The GRPA District Five 10U tournament continues through Friday in Rome.

  • Cartersville Little League teams come up short at NW Georgia Sectionals; Local teams prep for GRPA tournaments

    June 4, 2025 Three Cartersville Little League tournament teams battled in Peachtree City last weekend through Tuesday, but came up short in their bids to reach the Georgia State Tournament. The Cartersville Purple 8U team finished runner-up in the double-elimination Northwest Georgia Rookie League Tournament to Smyrna Little League 8U Blue. Cartersville 8U Purple defeated host Peachtree City 15-5 in their tournament opener, but dropped two games (5-3 and 9-3) to the eventual champs. The Cartersville Purple 9U team finished third in the Sandlot Northwest Georgia Tournament. Cartersville 9U defeated Bartow Blue 17-1 before falling to Smyrna Blue 7-1 and Smyrna Red 11-5. The Cartersville 7U team competed in the Northwest Georgia Coach Pitch Tournament, but was eliminated in two games.  Local youth teams will begin playing in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 5 softball and baseball tournaments this weekend. Cartersville and Bartow County will be represented in the 10-team 8U Coach Pitch Softball Tournament at Westside Park in Whitfield County. Bartow 8U begins play on Friday night against Calhoun, while Cartersville will play Rome on Saturday morning. The double-elimination tournament continues through Wednesday, June 11. Bartow County will have a team in the six-team 10U Machine Pitch Softball Tournament in Trion that begins on Thursday night. Bartow 10U has a first-round bye and will play the winner of the Rome/Murray County first-round game on Thursday night. The double-elimination 10U Machine Pitch tournament will conclude on Saturday afternoon. The five-team 12U Softball Tournament begins on Monday, June 9 in Trion and will include a Bartow County team. Bartow plays Trion in the opening round on Monday evening. The double-elimination tournament continues through Thursday, June 12. The 15-team GRPA District 5 Coach Pitch Baseball Tournament begins Friday night at Westside Park in Whitfield County. Cartersville and Bartow County will each have two teams entered. The double-elimination event continues through Wednesday, June 11. Rome and Floyd County will host the District 5 GRPA 10U Tournament. Games will be played at Riverview Park, North Floyd Park,  and Lower Alto Park. Cartersville and Bartow County will have teams competing in the 14-team double-elimination tournament. Cartersville faces Rome Blue on Friday at Riverview. Bartow squares off with Summerville on Friday at North Floyd. The tournament continues through Friday, June 13. Bartow and Cartersville have teams entered in the 12U District 5 Tournament at Heritage Point Park in Dalton. Cartersville plays LaFayette, and Bartow County faces host Dalton in the first round on Thursday night. The 11-team double-elimination tournament runs through Wednesday, June 11.  Last weekend, the Cartersville Little League 7U All-Star team represented CLL at the Georgia Northwest Section Tournament in Peachtree City.   • Clyburn finishes as low amateur at the 91st Atlanta Open

    June 4, 2025 Cartersville golfer R.B. Clyburn was the low amateur June 2-3 at the 91st Georgia Section PGA Yamaha Atlanta Open, contested at Cherokee Town and Country Club-North in Sandy Springs.  Professional Jacob Tilton of Ansley Golf Club shot 65-67 (12-under par) to win the tournament championship by six shots over Francisco Bide (Capital City Club). Clyburn (69-70, 5-under par) tied for third overall with professionals Chad Thomas (West Pines Golf Club) and Austin Morrison (Sea Island Golf Club). Amateur runner-up Pierce Adamson (4-under par) tied three professionals — Matt Elliott (Achasta Golf Club), Todd Ormsby (Highland Country Club), and Peter Jones (Cherokee Town and Country Club). Clyburn struggled at the beginning of the tournament on Monday, starting five-over par through the first three holes. However, he rallied back into contention with nine birdies in the round and played his final 33 holes 10-under par. The next Georgia Section PGA event open to amateurs is the West Pines Classic in Douglasville on July 7-8. Clyburn is the defending champion.

    June 2, 2025 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The 2025 college baseball season ended for two former Cartersville Hurricanes this past weekend, while three local baseball professionals move into the middle of their 2025 campaigns. Caleb Daniel of Georgia Tech and Colin Eaton of East Tennessee State saw their teams eliminated in the NCAA regionals, while pros Mason Barnett, Logan Martin, and Anthony Seigler enter the third month of their MiLB schedules. MiLB Mason Barnett MASON BARNETT — Las Vegas Aviators (Oakland A’s Triple-A affiliate; 4th-year pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … improved his season mark to 2-1 with a six-inning home start and an 8-2 victory last Wednesday over the Oklahoma City Comets. He allowed two earned runs on six hits and three walks. The 24-year-old struck out four, facing 26 batters. The Aviators (34-22) finished the week 2-4 against Oklahoma City but remain in first place in the Pacific Coast League West. Las Vegas has a six-game road series this week against the Tacoma Rainiers. Logan Martin LOGAN MARTIN — Quad Cities River Bandits (Kansas City Royals High-Class A affiliate; 3rd-year pro; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) …made two home pitching starts last week against the South Bend Cubs, earning a win in one game and a no-decision in the other. On May 27, he allowed three earned runs on six hits and one walk during a six-inning start and a 10-4 win. This past Sunday, in an eventual 3-1 victory, he allowed one earned run in 3-⅓ innings, yielding two hits and five walks. The 23-year-old righty totaled six strikeouts in the two games. The River Bandits (32-19) were 4-2 last week against South Bend. Quad Cities entered the week in first place in the Midwest League West. They play a six-game series this week at the Peoria Chiefs. Anthony Seigler ANTHONY SEIGLER — Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers Triple-A affiliate; 8th-year pro; Cartersville HS) … although his 16-game hitting streak was halted on May 29, he hit safely in four of five games last week as the Sounds went 2-4 in a series at the Indianapolis Indians. The 25-year-old finished the week 7-for-19, including one triple, two doubles, three runs scored, five walks, and two RBI. Nashville (33-23) began the week with a one-half game lead over Toledo in the International League West. The Sounds host the Gwinnett Stripers for six games on Tuesday through Sunday. COLLEGE BASEBALL Caleb Daniel CALEB DANIEL — Georgia Tech (Fr., Cartersville HS) … the Yellow Jackets’ All-ACC Freshman team outfielder went 3-for-13 as his team went 1-2 in the NCAA Oxford Regional this past weekend. Georgia Tech defeated Western Kentucky 9-2, but was eliminated in losses to Murray State (13-11) and Ole Miss (11-9). Daniel had one double, one walk, scored one run, and drove in three runs in the regional. In 55 games, he hit for a .312 average with seven homers and 32 RBI. The Jackets concluded the 2025 season with a 41-19 record and the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title. Colin Eaton COLIN EATON — East Tennessee State University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … made a 1-⅔ inning shutout relief appearance against Louisville in the NCAA Nashville Regional on Friday at Vanderbilt, but the Buccaneers fell 8-3 and were later eliminated on Saturday by Wright State 7-5. Eaton entered with his team trailing 8-2 and closed out the seventh and eighth innings. He allowed no runs on two hits with no walks. His five outs were retired with three groundouts and two flyouts. The right-hand pitcher made 16 relief appearances this season and was 1-0 with one save. He finished the year with a 7.32 ERA in 19-⅔ innings with 25 strikeouts. ETSU finished 2025 with a 41-17 record and was the Southern Conference champions.

  • Georgia Highlands College adds women's volleyball as a full varsity sport

    May 30, 2025 From GHC Athletics Georgia Highlands College Director of Athletics Dr. Nicole Levering has announced the addition of women’s volleyball as a full varsity sport at the Division I level of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), beginning with the 2025-26 academic year. The Chargers will compete in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) and play a full 25-game schedule. A national search for the program’s first head coach is currently underway. “I’m excited to announce the addition of women’s volleyball as a varsity sport for the 2025-26 academic year,” said Dr. Levering. “Volleyball is experiencing rapid growth and enjoys significant popularity in the northwest Georgia region. I eagerly anticipate nurturing the development of this program and its contribution to the expansion of the GHC Athletics Department.” Josie Tolsma, a setter from Allatoona High School, will be one of the team leaders. She is starting her second term as the president of GHC’s Student Government Association (SGA) and also acts as a Student Ambassador. “Volleyball becoming a full varsity sport is something that we on the team have worked very hard for,” Tolsma said. “We all put time and effort into our games, practices, and training—even when it wasn’t required—so I believe we have really earned this. We still have a lot to learn, but having an opportunity to prove ourselves as a varsity team and as part of the GHC family is an amazing opportunity.” The Chargers will kick off their inaugural varsity season at home with the Three Rivers Volleyball Classic, hosted August 22–23. The event will feature matches against Trinity College of Florida, Cleveland State Community College (TN), and conference rival Andrew College. The team will then hit the road for a tournament at Wallace State Community College (AL), followed by a competitive slate of matches across the region, including games against Shorter University, Reinhardt University, Wesleyan College, and Calhoun Community College, among others.   • Lady Tigers receive All-Region soccer honors

    May 30, 2025 Five Adairsville Lady Tigers soccer players were recently honored with All-Region 7-AAA selections. Samantha Gough, Alexa Damer, and Ella Edwards were selected First Team All-Region 7-AAA. Victoria Loudon and Alivia Joslin were named Second Team All-Region.   • Purdy and Nelson selected as the Region Player of the Year

    May 29, 2025 The baseball coaches in Region 7-AAAA and Region 7-AAA have released their 2025 All-Region selections. Andrew Purdy of Cartersville was named the Region 7-AAAA Player of the Year. The University of Alabama commit started all 42 games for the Hurricanes in 2025 as an infielder and pitcher. On offense, Purdy hit .495 with 20 doubles, one triple, and nine home runs. He walked 35 times and scored 62 runs from his leadoff position. He finished the season with 36 RBI in 119 official at-bats and struck out only 15 times. As a right-hand pitcher, Purdy had a 9-2 record and was credited with two saves in 11 starts and 15 mound appearances. He completed the year with a 1.71 ERA in 49 innings with 81 strikeouts. Jack Nelson of Adairsville was selected as the Region 7-AAA Player of the Year. He finished the 2025 campaign with a .423 batting average and a slugging percentage of .535. His offensive numbers included 30 hits, five doubles, and 21 RBI. On the mound, Nelson had a 7-2 record.
