The Georgia Highlands Chargers swept a doubleheader Tuesday with Triton College (IL) winning the first game 9-1 and the second game 7-6. The Chargers scored early and often in the opener, building a 7-0 lead with runs in each of the first four innings. Following a scoreless fifth frame, GHC added two more runs in the sixth and held on for a 9-1 victory. Conner Perry took care of the visiting Trojan with a complete-game, two-hitter on the mound for Georgia Highlands. Perry walked three and struck out six. Connor Todaro doubled and homered in the opener totaling five RBIs. Brandon Prince also had two hits for the Chargers. In the second game, Triton held a 4-1 lead through three innings before the Chargers grabbed their first lead with a five-run fourth inning. The Trojans then answered with two runs in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 6-all. Following a scoreless sixth inning, Todaro delivered an RBI, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to complete the doubleheader sweep. Matthew Silka (3 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2K) picked up the pitching win for GHC by wrapping up the final three innings. Caleb Garner (2.1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 3K) was the starter on the mound for the Chargers and Steven Thompson (1.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 0H, 1BB, 3K) worked middle relief. Joe Sutton (double, 3 RBIs) and Todaro (double, RBI) had two hits each for Georgia Highlands. Trace Twardoski (2 RBIs), Prince, David Smith (RBI), and Palmer Sapp (double) had one hit apiece. Georgia Highlands (15-3) will host Tennessee Wesleyan in a doubleheader Monday.

The Cass boys soccer team won its third in a row Tuesday night and opened Region 7-AAAAA play with a 2-0 home victory over Calhoun. Kaleb Speights and Braxton Benham scored the Cass goals as the Colonels improved to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in region action. The loss drops Calhoun to 3-4-2 and 0-1 in the region. Magno Moreno assisted on the Speights goal while Speights had the helper on the Benham score. Up next for the Cass boys is a non-region matchup with Class 7A North Paulding Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Cochran Stadium.

This week's update for college and pro athletes with Cartersville and Bartow County ties. BASKETBALL Jacquez Fountain (Albany Tech So., Cass HS) — While he struggled with efficiency, Fountain managed to post a 25-point, 13-rebound double-double in an 82-75 loss to Georgia Highlands Saturday at home. Albany Tech also swept Andrew last week, winning Tuesday on the road and Thursday at home. Fountain contributed nine points and five boards in Tuesday’s 62-52 victory, but stats were unavailable for Thursday’s 94-65 triumph. T.J. Horton (Georgia Highlands Fr., Cartersville HS) — Horton put together a pair of stellar performances off the bench early in the week. He scored 16 points (6-of-9 FG, 4-of-6 3PT) in a 96-85 win over South Georgia Tuesday at home. Horton compiled 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals in a 116-106 overtime loss in a Thursday rematch on the road. Those outings earned him a start Saturday at Albany Tech. However, Horton went just 3-for-10 from the floor for nine points. He did rack up seven boards in the win. DiAnthony Heathcock (Columbia International Fr., Woodland HS) — Heathcock posted six points and three rebounds in a 93-84 loss to Montreat in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament Thursday in Kingsport, Tennessee. Jaylon Pugh (Furman Jr., Cartersville HS) — Pugh made his only shot attempt in a 5-minute cameo during Furman’s 72-63 win over The Citadel last Wednesday at home. He didn’t make an appearance in a 74-73 loss Saturday at Wofford. Josie Summerville (North Park Jr., Adairsville HS) — Summerville helped North Park to a 2-1 record last week. She totaled six points and nine rebounds in a 56-54 win over Carthage last Tuesday and added 12 points and eight boards in a 65-63 triumph against Illinois Wesleyan Thursday. In a 77-61 loss Saturday at Illinois Wesleyan, Summerville contributed four points and an equal number of rebounds. Nakiyah Washington (Piedmont So., Adairsville HS) — Washington opened the week with a dominant showing in an 81-60 win against LaGrange last Tuesday at home. She scored a career-high 31 points, while adding 13 rebounds and nine steals in the near triple-double. In a Friday-Sunday set at Maryville (Tennessee), Washington totaled 34 points, eight rebounds and nine steals. Piedmont won both games (68-60 and 76-65, respectively) to finish with a perfect 12-0 record in USA South regular-season play. FOOTBALL Terry Berdin (Reinhardt Jr., Cartersville HS) — Berdin ran twice for 6 yards apiece and hauled in a 4-yard reception in a 52-0 victory over Point Saturday at home. Bryce Burgess (Reinhardt Jr., Adairsville HS) — Burgess rushed twice for 5 total yards in the resounding win over Point. Hunter Hardin (Point Sr., Woodland HS) — Hardin played along the offensive front, but Point only garnered 150 yards of total offense in the loss to Reinhardt. Bradley Kirk (Shorter Jr., Cartersville HS) — Kirk saw snaps but didn’t record any stats in a 35-3 loss Saturday at Kennesaw State. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — (8th-year pro; Pittsburgh Pirates; Cartersville HS)… worked the third inning of the Pirates’ 6-4 win Sunday over Baltimore. It was the spring training opener for both teams. Howard, 27, faced five batters and gave up an unearned run following a Pittsburgh outfield error. The southpaw recorded two strikeouts and issued one walk in the inning. TRACK AND FIELD Trevor Knowles (Albion Sr., Woodland HS) — Knowles won the triple jump and added top-five finishes in the long jump and high jump in a standout showing at the MIAA Jamboree Saturday in Angola, Indiana. Knowles took the triple jump title with a distance of 13.9 meters — 0.67 meters more than his closest competition. His long jump topped out at 6.65 meters to finish third. Knowles’ high jump of 1.92 meters garnered him fourth place. Stephen Smith (Kennesaw State So., Cass HS) — Smith finished in a tie for third place in the men’s pole vault, topping out at 4.46 meters, at the ASUN Indoor Championships Friday in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Elle Causby is the Adairsville High School Elite Athlete of the Month for February 2021. A freshman forward on the Lady Tigers’ soccer team, Elle is the daughter of Dusty Causby and Angie Newman. “Elle has made an immediate impact as a freshman,” said Adairsville girls soccer head coach Major David Sexauer. “She is a student-athlete with tremendous character and work ethic. We are looking forward to seeing how she continues to improve this year and throughout high school. She has the potential to be a special player.” Causby is taking all Honors and Advanced Placement classes and has plans to go to medical school. “Elle is focused at practice and a team player of high character. She is seeing a lot of playing time as a freshman,” added Sexauer. The Cass High School Elite Athlete of the Month for February is Noah Hoffmeier. Hoffmeier is a four-year letterman in wrestling and a three-year letterman for the Colonels football team as a nose-guard. The son of Travis and Amy Hoffmeier, Noah finished his 2020-21 wrestling season with a perfect 15-0 record with 15 pins. He won the 220-pound Class 5A state championship — a second state title in his wrestling career. He also won state as a sophomore. In addition to his two state titles, Hoffmeier completed his high school wrestling career as a two-time region champion, a state sectional champion, and a three-time state placer. With a 3.4 GPA, he is ranked in the top forty percent of his class. He plans to go work in the HVAC industry following graduation. “All his coaches know he will apply the same work ethic he has in his athletic career to his every day life,” said Cass A.D. Dr. Nicky Moore. “He will continue to be a successful member of his community.” “It has been an honor to coach a wonderful young man and he will be missed,” added Cass wrestling coach D.L. Koontz. Anna Mann is the February 2021 Elite Athlete of the Month representing Cartersville High School. A member of the Hurricanes’ varsity competition cheerleading team and sideline football cheer team, Anna is the daughter of Art and Allison Mann. Mann, a junior, has been a member of the Canes’ 2018 state championship cheer team, 2019 state runner up, and back-to-back region championship teams the past two years. “Anna is a dedicated member of our competition cheer team on and off the mat,” said Cartersville coach Breanna McDonald. “She gives 100% at every practice and competition. She encourages her teammates and keeps a positive attitude. She is always respectful to her coaches and her teammates.” In addition to her work with the Cartersville teams, she is an all-star cheerleader for the Stingray program in Marietta. “If I get accepted to a D1 school, I will try out for their cheer team and hope for the best,” Mann stated. “If I go to a smaller school, I will probably retire my cheer shoes. Either way, I will be happy to move on to the next chapter in my life.” Emma Faith Savage is the Woodland High School Elite Athlete of the Month. The daughter of Donald Savage and Carrie Evans, Emma is a senior on the Lady Cats tennis team and has played for all four years of high school. She has also been a member of the WHS Band for four years, leading them the past two years as their drum major. Savage is playing Line 2 singles this season for the Wildcats and partnered with Eryn Gentry the past two seasons at Line 1 doubles. “Emma has really turned a corner this season with her tennis,” said Woodland head coach Beth Heath. “She is really showing her determination and competitiveness. That progress really revealed itself recently in her come-from-behind win against North Paulding. Emma has struggled with some minor health problems that have affected her tennis, but she has overcome those to improve dramatically.” Savage has maintained an academic ranking in the top 10% of her class through four years. She has been the Scholar Athlete of the Year for Woodland tennis the past two years and maintains a GPA above 99. Savage plans to attend University of Georgia in the fall. She plans to continue to play her trumpet in the band, major in chemistry, and eventually attend dental school. Adairsville baseball led Armuchee 2-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning Monday night at LakePoint in Emerson, but the Indians erupted for four runs in the frame to defeat the Tigers 5-2. Chandler Desanto led Armuchee’s offense with two hits and one RBI. Four other Indians had one hit each. Will Miller (6 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 3K) picked up the pitching win for Armuchee. Jack Rogers (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) worked a shutout seventh inning for a save. Armuchee evened its season mark to 3-3. Woodland led 2-1 through three innings but trailed 6-3 before knotting the score at 6-all in the bottom of the sixth. The Wildcats out hit McEachern ten to five, but also committed four errors in the contest. Noah Johnson and Reece Kingeter combined for five hits including two doubles and four RBIs to pace the Indians’ offense. Chase Carson had a three hit game for Woodand and drove in a run. Scotty Smith finished with two hits. Nate Rosser had a hit and two RBIs. Trevor Montgomery (triple), Jacob Gravett, Trevor Collum, and Austin Sanders had one hit each. The Amateur High School Bass Anglers had a turnout of 45 boats Saturday at Laurel Park on Lake Lanier near Gainesville. The young anglers returned a total of 87 bass for 184 pounds overall. The Junior League competition was won by Brandon Willard of Red Top Middle School and Bryan Gayton of Woodland Middle School. The two combined for 11.77 pounds with a 3.98 pound big fish. The Senior League winners were Blake Hilburn and Levi Mathis of Adairsville High School with a total of 14.8 pounds. The Senior League big fish was won by Tyler and A.J. The Cartersville boys track and field team finished runner up to champion Carrollton Saturday at the Purple Hurricane Invitational at Weinman Stadium. Carrollton won the title with 167 points. Cartersville followed with 104 and Blessed Trinity was next with 82 points. Woodland (35 points) finished in a seventh place tie with North Springs at the 13-team event. In the girls meet, Carrollton edged Chapel Hill 99-98 to collect the team title. Woodland placed eighth with 39 points. Cartersville was ninth with 36 team points. Jack Whitley tossed a five-inning, one-hitter in the opening game and a big first inning in the second game propelled the Adairsville Tigers to a doubleheader sweep Saturday over visiting Chattooga. Adairsville won the first game 11-0 and finished off the double dip with a 12-2 victory. In the first game of the day, Whitley kept the visiting Indians off the scoreboard allowing only a fourth inning double to Chattooga’s Rett Rosson. Whitley walked two and struck out nine of the nineteen batters he faced. Meanwhile, the Tigers offense pounced for six runs in the bottom of the first, then added two in the third and three in the fourth inning for the five-inning win. Braden Powell (3 RBIs), Chris Roper (double, 2 RBIs), Tyler Driggers, Logan Hunt (double, triple, RBI), and Kyler Smith (double, RBI) all had two hits in the opening game. Elijah Padgett (RBI), Evan Sanders (double), and Connor Crunkleton (double) added one hit apiece. In the second game, Adairsville sent a dozen men to the plate in the Tigers half of the first inning and grabbed an 8-0 lead. Four singles, a walk, three hit batsmen, and a pair of Indians’ errors led to the Adairsville outburst. The Tigers added a single run in the second, two more in the fourth, and a final run in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early. Brenden Carroll (4 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 11K) started the second game for Adairsville and picked up the win. Braden Powell (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) worked the final frame. Kyler Smith had two hits. Carroll (3 RBIs), Wade Dooley (2 RBIs), Chris Roper (RBI), Connor Crunkleton (double, RBI), and Tyler Driggers contributed one hit each. Elijah Padgett and Grayson Belcher added one RBI each. Adairsville (3-3) plays at Armuchee Monday at 4 p.m. and will host Coosa Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Georgia Highlands College baseball dropped a pair of games Thursday to Wallace State-Dothan at LakePoint in Emerson. The visiting Governors took the first game 10-8 and won the nightcap, 8-3. The Chargers led 6-4 through four innings, but a four-run fifth by Wallace State-Dothan built regained the lead at 8-6. Georgia Highlands tied the game with a two-run homerun by J Sutton in the sixth, but the Governors scored twice in the seventh and blanked the Chargers in the final frame for a two-run win. Ryan Suppa (1.2 IP, 2ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K) was tagged with the pitching loss in the opener in relief of starter Johnny Dow (4.1 IP, 6ER, 8H, 1BB, 2K). Connor Todaro (3 RBIs), Trenton Parker (double, RBI), Palmer Sapp, and Brandon Prince had two hits each for the Chargers. In the second game, Wallace State-Dothan took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer, and led 5-1 through five innings on their way to an 8-3 win. Georgia Highlands managed only three hits in the nightcap loss. Chase Townsend (4.2 IP, 5R, 4ER, 9H, 2BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss. Matthew Silka (2.1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 3K) also pitched for the Chargers. Todaro doubled twice at the plate. Trace Twardoski doubled for the other GHC base hit. The Chargers (13-3) return to the diamond at LakePoint Tuesday for a doubleheader with Scoutz USA Post Grad starting at 1 p.m.

The Cass girls soccer team defeated Villa Rica Friday night at home, 3-1. Morgan Tompkins scored off a deflection from Dayanara Pineda. Leidi Toribio found the net following a cross from Anna Marsala, and Marsala added an unassisted goal in the final minute of play for the Lady Colonels. Cass (3-3) will host Calhoun next Friday to open play in Region 7-AAAAA.

The Cass Lady Colonels basketball team had their season come to a close Friday night with a loss in the second round of the Class 5A State Tournament at Southwest DeKalb, 72-46. Lauryn Bell had 15 points for the Panthers. Adrieanna Brownlee scored 14 points and collected 15 rebounds. Pryia Thompson scored 14 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds while Taylor Christmas added 13 points and six boards. Fourth-ranked Southwest DeKalb out-rebounded Cass 54-23 in the contest. Senior Londaisha Smith led the Lady Colonels with 20 points. Cass won its first 24 games in 2020-21 to complete an undefeated regular season. The Lady Colonels finished as runner-up in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament and after Friday night's Sweet Sixteen round loss, finished the season with a 25-2 record.

The Cass boys soccer team evened its season record at 3-3 with a 2-1 win Friday night at North Murray. Alfred Chege and Omar Garcia scored the Colonels’ goals. Cass has played a challenging non-region slate heading into region play next Tuesday. Five of the Colonels’ first six opponents have been ranked in the top ten in their respective classifications. Cass begins Region 7-AAAAA play Tuesday night at home against Calhoun at 7 p.m.
