The Georgia Highlands Chargers lost for the first time this season Tuesday in a doubleheader split with Wallace State-Hanceville at LakePoint in Emerson. The Chargers won the opener 6-5 for their seventh-straight win to open the 2021 campaign, but the visiting Lions won Game 2, 4-1 to hand GHC their initial loss of the year. In Tuesday’s opener, Georgia Highlands scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead only to have the Lions respond with five runs of their own in the top of the fifth. A two-run bottom of the fifth for the Chargers closed out the scoring and relievers Garrett Sagro (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) and Steven Thompson (0.2 IP) closed out the final two frames for a one-run win. Catcher David Smith had two hits including a triple, a double, and one RBI for the GHC offense. Palmer Sapp tripled home two runs in the fourth. Joe Sutton, Trenton Parker (RBI), and Brandon Prince (RBI) had the other Chargers’ base hits. Trace Twardoski got Georgia Highlands on the scoreboard first in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly. Starting pitcher Chase Townsend (4.2 IP, 4ER, 3H, 2BB, 2K) earned his second win of the season on the mound. Cason Rich (0.1 IP, 1ER, 2H) allowed a home run, but retired the final out of the fifth inning on the mound for Georgia Highlands. In Game 2, the Lions’ Jayce Guyette smacked a first inning, two-run home run that gave Wallace State-Hanceville a lead they would not relinquish. Mason Walker singled home a run in the third and Jarren Wright did the same in the fourth for the Lions’ four runs. GHC scored a lone run in the bottom of the fourth on a Sapp sacrifice fly, but the Chargers would get no closer. Jacob Smith (4 IP, 1ER, 2H, 4BB, 5K) earned the pitching win for the Lions. Hunter Goodwin (3 IP, 0R, 4H, 3K) closed out the final three frames for the visitors. Ryan Suppa (3.1 IP, 4ER, 7H, 2BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers. Caleb Garner (3.2 IP, 0R, 3H, 5K) pitched in relief. Parker Poteet had three hits for Wallace State-Hanceville including a double. Six different Chargers — Connor Todaro, Twardoski, Parker, Harmon, Sapp, and Smith — had one hit apiece. Georgia Highlands (7-1) will host a three game series with Lincoln Trail College (IL) Friday and Saturday at LakePoint. The opener is set for Friday at 3 p.m. and the two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.

The Woodland girls and boys basketball teams both lost region games to visiting Hiram Tuesday night. The Lady Cats fell to the 8th-ranked Lady Hornets 53-23 and the Wildcats dropped a 67-33 decision in the nightcap. With their wins, the Hiram girls improved to 14-14 overall and 7-2 in region play. The Hiram boys are now 12-9 overall and finished 7-3 in region action. Both Hiram teams will be No. 2-seeds in next week’s Region 7-AAAAA tournament at Cartersville’s Storm Center. Jordan Gary, Jayden Clark, and Walter Matthews led the Hiram boys Tuesday with 14, 13, and 12 points, respectively. Alejandro Mays led Woodland with 11 points. The Wildcats (3-19, 0-8) will host Blessed Trinity Wednesday and Cass Friday to close out the regular season. Girls games both nights begin at 6 p.m. with boys to follow.

The Adairsville Tigers went on the road Tuesday night and took region-leading and 10th-ranked LaFayette down to the wire before coming up short in a 78-75 loss. Decameron Porter and Aidan Hadaway led the Ramblers with 27 and 25 points, respectively. Adairsville led 23-14 after one quarter and held a 39-36 lead at halftime, but the Ramblers surged ahead 61-53 by the end of the third quarter. The Tigers made another run in the final period, but came up shy in a three-point loss. T.J. Printup, Jr. scored a game-high 36 points to lead the Tigers. Tucker Deams followed with 21 points on seven, three-pointers. LaFayette improved to 16-1 for the season and 13-1 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (10-11, 4-10) will finish up regular season play this Friday at home against Rockmart. LAFAYETTE 74, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 25 The Lady Ramblers pulled away early with a 31-8 lead after the opening eight minutes in Tuesday night’s 74-25 region win. Mykeria Johnson led the scoring for LaFayette with 26 points. LaTayah Barber scored 19 for the Lady Ramblers. Lexie Childers and Alyssa Jarrett finished with four points each for the Lady Tigers. LaFayette improved to 10-8 on the year and 7-8 in region play. Adairsville (6-18, 3-12) hosts Rockmart Friday at 7 p.m. in their regular season finale’.

The Cartersville girls and boys basketball teams lost Region 7-AAAAA games Tuesday night at Calhoun. The Lady Canes fell 51-27 before the Hurricanes were knocked off in double-overtime, 57-52. The Calhoun girls built a 25-12 lead by halftime and cruised through the second half for a 24-point win. Ashlyn Brzoski led the Lady Jackets with 22 points. Lyndi Rae Davis followed with 15. Jamiya Moore led Cartersville with nine points. Lehla Thomas scored four. Kiera Milline finished with three points and Sequoyah McConnell collected seven rebounds and four steals to go with her two points. Calhoun improved to 14-10 for the season and finished region play 6-4. The Lady Jackets will be the No. 3-seed in next week’s Region 7-AAAAA tournament behind Cass and Hiram. Cartersville (5-13, 1-8) will wrap up regular season play Thursday night at home against Blessed Trinity in a 6 p.m. start. CALHOUN 57, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 52 (2 OT) The Canes battled back from an early deficit Tuesday night at Calhoun and sent the game to a pair of overtime periods before falling to the Yellow Jackets, 57-52. Calhoun led 16-4 after one quarter; 28-21 at halftime; and 38-33 through three quarters before the Canes caught them at the end of regulation, 44-44. Dylan Faulkner scored a game-high 21 points to lead Calhoun. Peyton Law added 15 points for the Yellow Jackets. Kam Callahan led Cartersville with 16 points. Robert Novak scored 12. Amarai Orr chipped in 10 points and Kolbe Benham added eight for the Canes. Calhoun finished its regular season with a 12-10 mark. The Yellow Jackets finished 6-4 in Region 7-AAAAA and will finish no worse than a third-place tie in the region standings. Cartersville (8-10, 3-6) closes out the regular season at home Thursday against Blessed Trinity in what could be a preview of the opening region tournament game for those two teams the following Monday. Blessed Trinity currently sits in fourth place with Cartersville currently fifth in the Region 7-AAAAA standings.

Point was limited to only 179 yards of total offense and 101 rushing yards in a 36-3 home loss to Reinhardt. He finished with a time of 9 minutes, 27.82 seconds. TREVOR KNOWLES — Albion University (Woodland HS)… captured the long jump title Friday at Trine in Angola, Indiana. His leap of 6.83 meters won the event. Meanwhile, Knowles placed third in the high jump, clearing 1.89 meters, and came in 12th in the prelims for the 60-meter sprint. McKENNA TRAPHEAGEN — Georgia Tech (Fr., Woodland HS) … competing in the 3000-meter run, Trapheagen came in 17th, with a time of 10:34.45, at the South Carolina Invitational. WRESTLING LOGAN SIMS — Life University (Jr., Woodland)… The former Wildcats standout helped Life claim its second straight division title in the Mid-South Conference. Wrestling in the 141-pound division, Sims earned a 9-2 win over his Cumberland opponent in a 39-8 victory for second-ranked Life Friday in Mount Vernon. SOFTBALL COLBI BALLARD — Shorter University (So., Cartersville HS) … started twice in right field over the weekend as the Hawks opened the season at the Charger Chillout in Huntsville, Alabama playing four different teams. Friday, Ballard went 1-for-3 with a triple, one RBI, and scored a run in a 10-6 win over Miles College. On Saturday, she was 2-for-3 with one RBI in a 6-4 win over Kentucky Wesleyan. Varner came around to score a run for the Hawks in each of those games. BASEBALL CLIFTON DEMPSEY — Toccoa Falls College (Sr., Cartersville HS)… started at shortstop and was in the leadoff spot in the batting order in the Screaming Eagles’ opening day loss at Truett McConnell last Tuesday. Dempsey went 1-for-4 with a walk and scored a run in the 14-10 loss. At the Hoover, Alabama Score International over the weekend Dempsey was 1-for-4 and scored a run in an 8-7 win over Bethel University. The Cass Lady Colonels led by only two points at halftime Monday night in Roswell but increased the defensive pressure in the third quarter and knocked down five, three-pointers in the period to take control at Blessed Trinity for an eventual 16-point win. Londaisha Smith, Haley Johnson, Amaya Ford, Ariana Hames, and Keara McDaniel all made a three-pointer in the third quarter for the Lady Colonels as they built as large as a 15-point lead. The two teams were tied 12-all at the end of the first quarter with Cass holding a 24-22 lead at the intermission. The Lady Colonels led 44-31 at the end of the third quarter and were ahead by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter on their way to a 59-43 victory. Smith led Cass with 18 points on the night. Johnson followed with nine. McDaniel and Claire Davis contributed eight each. Ford and Hames totaled five each while Gracie Elkins and Justice Bennett added two points apiece. Christa Lair scored 13 of her 18 points in the first half for Blessed Trinity. Riley Fleck added seven for the Lady Titans (4-14, 2-5). Cass (22-0, 9-0) has already secured the No. 1-seed in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament February 15-19 at Cartersville. With the top seed receiving a bye to Wednesday’s semifinals, the Lady Colonels have also locked up a berth in the Class AAAAA state tournament that begins February 23. Cass, ranked No. 3 in Class AAAAA, will try to complete an undefeated regular season Friday at Woodland in a 6 p.m. start.

The Woodland girls soccer team won at Cedartown Monday night, 5-1. Cedartown opened the scoring just 10 minutes into the game, but Woodland answered with five unanswered goals. Tiera Feanny scored twice in the first half for the Lady Cats, finding the net in the 19th and 20th minutes. Reagan Weightman added a third goal for Woodland in the 25th minute of the half for a 3-1 lead at the intermission. Atlantis Walker scored for Woodland 10 minutes into the second half and Paige Forman added a fifth goal for the Lady Cats with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. Woodland (1-1) plays at Pepperell Tuesday evening.

The four Bartow County wrestling teams will send more than 40 wrestlers to the GHSA state tournament next week at the Macon Centreplex after impressive performances this weekend. In Class AAAAA, Woodland — who won a third straight state duals championship last week — is set to possibly take a third -straight traditional format state title as well after qualifying wrestlers in all 14 weight classes. The Wildcats had six individual region champions Saturday and captured the region team title at Cass. The Colonels finished with five Region 7-AAAAA individual champions. Cass added three runners-up and a third place finish to qualify nine wrestlers for next weekend’s state tournament. Cartersville did not have an individual region champion, but will send seven wrestlers to the state tournament. The Canes finished third in Saturday’s region tournament behind Woodland and Cass. Adairsville competed Friday in the Area 4-AAA tournament at Rockmart. The Tigers had 13 individuals to earn top-three spots and qualify for next week’s state tournament in Macon. The Class AAA state tournament will be at the Macon Centreplex next Wednesday and Thursday. The Class AAAAA tournament will also be at the Macon Centreplex, but will be conducted Friday and Saturday. Georgia Highlands College pitcher Johnny Dow tossed a seven inning no-hitter Sunday and the Chargers completed a four-game sweep of visiting Snead State Community College in games played at the LakePoint Sports Complex in Emerson. In Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader, Dow tossed a complete game without allowing a walk or hit. The former Lassiter Trojans' right hand hurler fanned four Parsons’ batters in a 6-0 victory. Conor Todaro and David Smith paced the Chargers’ offense with two hits each. Todaro’s two hits included a double. Smith’s two hits contributed a pair of RBIs. Trace Twardoski had an RBI double. Joe Sutton, Trenton Parker, and Gavin Harmon (RBI) added one hit apiece. In Game 2, Georgia Highlands scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning on their way to a 6-3 win. Zack Valentine (1 IP, 3ER, 4H, 2BB) was credited with the pitching win despite allowing all three of the Snead State runs in the top of the sixth. Harper Powell finished 11th in the girls 50 yard freestyle finals and was 10th in the 100 yard backstroke competing for Adairsville in the Class A-AAA division of the 2021 GHSA State Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday at Georgia Tech. The Adairsville girls 400 freestyle relay team of Mallory Cook, Camille Woodall, Josie Siniard, and Harper Powell placed 10th. The Adairsville boys 200 freestyle relay team of Andy Barnett, Davis Hardin, Scott Nguyen, and Cooper Brown placed 17th. Individually in the Class 4A-5A division, Giulia Vidoli placed 10th in the 100 yard backstroke and was 12th in the 200 yard freestyle.

The Cass boys soccer team evened its season mark Friday night with a 6-1 win at Cedartown. Kaleb Speights scored twice for the Colonels. Magno Moreno, Omar Garcia, Christian Vilela, and Alex Cabanas added one goal each in the Cass win. “We showed some team growth tonight,” said Cass coach Justin Fitzgerald. “We’re still trying to prepare for our region schedule.” Cass (1-1) travels to Rome Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start. CHESTATEE 3, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 1 Cartersville came out in the short end Friday night after a physical game with Chestatee High School. Chestatee scored early and then proceeded to add two more goals before the half ended for a 3-0 lead. Cartersville narrowed the margin early in the second half with a goal from Giovanni Jacobo after he slotted the ball in the back of the net. He received a long throw from Jackson Brennan for the score. The Canes continued to challenge on the offensive end with several close opportunities in the second half. The closest was a Joel Zazueta attempt that slammed the framework on a free kick from 25 yards out. The Canes (1-1) host Central-Carroll Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Cartersville girls and boys basketball teams lost Region 7-AAAAA games Saturday afternoon at Hiram and the Adairsville boys dropped a double-overtime decision at Coahulla Creek in Region 6-AAA. The Lady Canes fell to the 8th-ranked Lady Hornets 58-21 while the Cartersville boys lost 65-62 on a last-second three-pointer by the Hornets. The Tigers trailed early and battled back in the fourth quarter to send their game into a pair of overtime periods before falling by four to the Colts. HIRAM 58, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 21 The 8th-ranked Lady Hornets raced to a 21-4 lead after one quarter and never looked back on their way to a 37-point win. Sydney Jones and Imani Smith led Hiram with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Kiera Milline scored eight points for Cartersville. Ansley Griffin and Ari Olotu added five points each. Hiram improved to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in region play. Cartersville (5-12, 1-7) plays at Calhoun Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will host Blessed Trinity Thursday at 6 p.m. to close out the regular season. HIRAM 65, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 62 Cartersville battled back from an eight-point, first quarter deficit to lead 50-46 heading into the fourth quarter but fell to a last-second three pointer by the Hornets, 65-62. Hiram led 23-15 after one quarter and 35-34 at halftime before the Hurricanes outscored the Hornets 16-11 in the third quarter. Jaydin Clark led Hira with 15 points. Jay Boyd, Jr. followed with 14 and Jackson Price added 13 for the Hornets (11-8, 6-2). Kam Callahan and Kolbe Benham scored 12 points each for Cartersville. COAHULLA CREEK 79, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 75 (2OT) The Adairsville boys rallied in the fourth quarter Saturday and took their game at Coahulla Creek into overtime tied at 60-all but came up four points short in the extra periods. The host Colts led 14-10 after one quarter; 36-26 at the intermission; and 49-43 through three quarters before the Tigers outscored them 17-11 in the final period to force overtime. Will Locke led Coahulla Creek with 24 points, including a dozen in the two overtime periods. Riley Mutter scored 17 for the Colts and Mario Edwards added 14 points. Tucker Deams paced Adairsville with 29 points on nine, three-pointers. He made seven treys in the second half. Conner Crunkleton and Tre Mitchell contributed 10 points each. Zac Postell finished with eight and Diego Perez added seven points for the Tigers. Coahulla Creek improved to 9-9 on the year and 5-8 in region action. Adairsville (10-10, 4-9) has three region games next week. The Tigers play at LaFayette Tuesday, at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Thursday, and host Rockmart Friday.
