The Cartersville girls won their opening round game at the 66th annual Seven Hills Rotary / Rome News-Tribune Christmas Tournament Monday, outlasting Armuchee in overtime 52-47. Ariana Cochran scored five of the Lady Canes’ nine points in overtime. She finished with seven points for the game and also dished out eight assist Cartersville led 12-7 after one quarter and held a 23-19 advantage at halftime before Armuchee grabbed a 31-28 lead after three quarters. The game went to overtime tied 43-43. Naijah Evans led all scorers in the game with 11 points for Cartersville. Cio Seigler followed with 10. Lehla Thomas (photo) posted nine points. Jakaya Draughn scored eight and Kierra Milline added five points in the Lady Canes’ balanced scoring attack. Julia Williams and Olivia Moses paced Armuchee with 10 points each. Ariona Dozier score eight for the Indians who slipped to 5-6. The Lady Canes (3-2) advance to the tournament semifinals Tuesday night at 5:30 at Georgia Highlands College to take on Class AAAAA 5th-ranked Rome. Rome (9-0) defeated Coosa Monday in the opening round 65-24.

Former Adairsville star and Clemson All-American Vic Beasley Jr. finished with five tackles and a sack Sunday in the Atlanta Falcons road upset of the San Francisco 49ers. His on the field success came in the same week former Cartersville High School quarterback Trevor Lawrence finished seventh in the 2019 Heisman Trophy voting. Meanwhile, several local basketball athletes made their mark on hardwoods across the nation and world. NFL VIC BEASLEY JR. — Atlanta Falcons (5th yr. pro; OLB; Clemson; Adairsville HS)… had five total tackles including a sack Sunday as the Falcons upset the San Francisco 49ers 29-22. Atlanta rallied for a touchdown with 0:02 remaining in the game to take a 23-22 lead and then scored on the ensuing kickoff by picking up a loose ball in the end zone during the 49ers’ multiple lateral return attempt. The loss knocked San Francisco (11-3) out of the top seed in the NFC for now. Beasley now has 26 total tackles, seven sacks, and a pair of forced fumbles this season. Atlanta (5-9) plays its final home game of the season Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium by hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Falcons will wrap up the season December 29 at Tampa Bay. COLLEGE FOOTBALL TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (So., QB, Cartersville HS)… Lawrence finished seventh in Heisman Trophy voting results Saturday night, but he did manage to receive three first-place votes. LSU’s Joe Burrow was the runaway winner ahead of Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Lawrence will help lead No. 3 Clemson (13-0) into the College Football Playoff semifinals at the Fiesta Bowl December 28 against Ohio State (13-0). Lawrence has 3,172 yards through the air with 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also has seven rushing touchdowns and 317 yards on the ground. He is 24-0 as a starter at Clemson. PRO BASKETBALL ELIJAH ROBINSON — Atenas (Argentina National League ) (2nd year pro; Emmanuel College; Excel Christian Academy)… a starting swingman, Robinson scored 12 points with three rebounds, two assists, and blocked one shot in his team’s 94-90 loss last Monday (Dec. 9). Hagans is averaging 13.7 points and 4.2 rebounds through Kentucky’s first nine games. The Cass girls and boys basketball teams made it a clean sweep of region and cross-county rival Woodland Saturday afternoon. The Lady Colonels defeated the Lady Cats 65-37 and the Colonels downed the Wildcats, 77-50. Cass sophomore Claire Davis scored 32 points for the Lady Colonels in their victory. Teammate Ariana Hames followed with nine points. Haley Johnson, Justice Bennett, and Amaya Ford added five each for the Cass girls. Woodland led 14-13 after one quarter, but Cass took a 28-20 lead to the locker room at halftime and extended the lead to 49-29 through three quarters. Jordan Thompson led the Lady Cats with 10 points. Gracie Styles and Lauren Morris contributed eight each for Woodland. The Cass girls improved to 6-3 overall and evened their Region 7-AAAAA record at 3-3. The Lady Colonels host Class AAAAA 2nd-ranked Villa Rica Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in another region tilt before participating in the Gordon Lee Christmas Tournament Thursday through Saturday. Fast-starting Colonels run away from Woodland The Cass boys basketball team grabbed a 28-6 lead after just one quarter Saturday afternoon on their way to a 27-point home and Region 7-AAAAA win over Woodland. The Colonels, who got 15 of Zaylan Chaney’s team-high 22 points in the first half, led 46-24 at the intermission. The Cass lead was 59-36 through three quarters. Four other Colonels reached double-figure scoring. Jaquan Heard and C.J. Pipkin scored 14 each for Cass. Braxton Benham contributed 12. Jordan Ford followed with 10 and Andrew Glaze added five points. Woodland’s DiAnthony Heathcock scored a game-high 23 points. Jaden Johnson posted 12. Jamison Lawrence and Jordan Barker added five and four points, respectively, for the Wildcats. The Adairsville girls and boys basketball teams lost Region 6-AAA games Saturday evening at Calhoun while the Excel Christian Academy boys suffered a non-region loss at Coosa. COOSA 77, EXCEL BOYS 60 The Excel Christian boys had a trio of players reach double-digits, but the Eagles lost at Coosa, 77-60. Rayshawn Womack scored 27 while Jakaden Barkley and Brendan Quillin posted 16 and 10, respectively for ECA. Kalil Holley added seven points in the losing cause. Keshawn Kindred led Coosa with 24 points. Excel slips to 2-5 overall. Coosa improved to 4-3. The Woodland High School wrestling team set a new scoring record by 17 points with a dozen total placers, six finalists, and three tournament champions as the Wildcats won the McCallie Wrestling Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday in Chattanooga. Woodland finished with 307 team points. The host school, McCallie, was second with 225. Chattooga (217), Woodward Academy (172), and Northwest Whitfield (158) rounded out the top five in the field of 17 schools. The Cass boys found themselves trailing Carrollton by five points with 1:40 remaining Friday night, but rallied at home to send the game to overtime and then defeated the Trojans 84-77. Five Colonels scored at least 13 points and Cass made 10 of 14 free throws in the overtime period for the key Region 7-AAAAA victory. Zaylan Chaney led Cass with 21 points. He was followed by Braxton Benham with 17, Jordan Ford with 15, Jaquan Heard tallied 14, and C.J. Pipkin finished with 13 points. Andrew Glaze added four points for the Colonels. The Tigers trailed 9-5 after one quarter, but carried a 24-18 advantage to the intermission. The game tightened in the third quarter with Adairsville taking a 32-31 lead into the final eight minutes. Gaven Crunkleton led all scorers in the game with 17 points for Adairsville. T.J. Printup finished with 10. Jaxon Welchel and Savaun Henderson contributed seven and five points, respectively. Gage Seibenhener led the Colts with nine points. The loss drops Coahulla Creek to a 4-4 record on the season and 1-4 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (3-4, 2-2) travels to region rival Calhoun Saturday night for a 7:30 p.m. tip. KELL 106, WOODLAND BOYS 23 The Class AAAAA fourth-ranked Kell Longhorns pounded visiting Woodland Friday night in Cobb County, 106-23. Kell led 40-5 after the first eight minutes and expanded their lead throughout the evening. Scoota Henderson led nine Longhorns that scored at least eight points. Najhae Colon followed with 14 and Julius Strahan finished with 12. Jaden Johnson had six points for the Wildcats. Kell improved to 8-2 on the season and 3-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (1-5, 0-4) plays at Cass in another region game Saturday at 4:30 p.m. NORTH COBB CHRISTIAN 81, EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 37 The ECA boys had a two-game win streak snapped Friday night with an 81-37 loss to visiting North Cobb Christian. Excel trailed 24-17 after one period, 49-21 at halftime, and 65-29 after three quarters. Rayshawn Womack and Kalil Holley led ECA with 12 points each. Brendan Quillin tossed in six. Josiah Scott and Caleb Crumly led North Cobb Christian (5-3, 2-2) with 20 and 13 points, respectively. Excel (2-4, 1-1) plays at Coosa Saturday at 4:30 p.m. KELL 50, WOODLAND GIRLS 33 The Class AAAAA 7th-ranked Lady Longhorns built a 21-point lead by halftime and held off the Woodland girls Friday night, 50-33, to remain unbeaten this season. Crystal Henderson led Kell (9-0, 4-0) with 13 points. Woodland got 10 points from Gracie Styles, eight by Morgan Cooper, and six by Ansley Evans. The Lady Cats (1-5, 1-3) play at Cass Saturday at 3 p.m. COAHULLA CREEK 66, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 45 Adairsville coach Michael Roberson was proud of his girls’ effort Friday night, but the Lady Tigers came up short in a home loss to Coahulla Creek, 66-45. Adairsville trailed 16-10 after one quarter and cut the lead to two points late in the second period before the Colts pushed out to a 32-23 lead at halftime. Katelyn Richards led Coahulla Creek (7-1, 4-1) with 15 points. Jillian Poe followed with 12. Haley Stiles led Adairsville with 17 points. Lexie Childers scored 14 for the Lady Tigers. Carrollton led 33-11 by halftime and 52-30 after three quarters. Kanija Daniel poured in 26 points to lead the Trojans. De’mauri Flournoy followed with 15 points for Carrollton (6-1, 3-1).
