Georgia Highlands College has selected Savannah Sloan as the new head coach of the Chargers softball team. Sloan comes to GHC from LaGrange College, where she served as the assistant softball coach and recruiting coordinator since 2017. “We are excited to welcome Savannah Sloan to the Charger family. Savannah brings a tremendous knowledge of the game at the highest levels,” said David Mathis, GHC’s Director of Athletics. “Savannah’s experience and her commitment to academics will ensure the success of our student athletes.” Sloan holds both a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and wellness and a master’s degree in physical education from Jacksonville State University. As a player at JSU, Sloan was a four-year starter, primarily playing catcher. She was part of teams that captured regular season and conference tournament championships. She was a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference first team selection. She has also played professional softball the last three summers in Germany. “It is truly an honor to be chosen as the head softball coach at Georgia Highlands College,” Sloan said. “Upon stepping on campus for the first time, it instantly felt like home. I am excited to be surrounded by an already outstanding staff.” Sloan says she has a game plan set for her first days on the job. “I intend on meeting with the team in order to introduce myself and get to know the players,” she said. “I am incredibly excited to work with this group of student athletes. The Adairsville High School wrestling team split a pair of head-to-head matches Tuesday night with Model and Rockmart. The Tigers beat Model 54-20, but fell to Rockmart, 44-34. “The guys wrestled well in the opener against Model,” said Adairsville head coach Ryan Torrence. “We had four starters out of the lineup due to weight progression or injury recovery but overall I was pleased. We simply didn’t wrestle as well against Rockmart. Everyone will be back in the lineup for this weekend and should be ready to go.” Adairsville had five individuals to win both of their matches Tuesday. Isaac Linley (120), James Standridge (138), Dalton Cornett (170), Evan Henry (182), and JT Jolly (195) were all 2-0 for the evening. The Tigers head to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee this weekend to participate in the Smoky Mountain Duals on Friday and Saturday.

The Cartersville High swim team won a three-way meet Tuesday with Coahulla Creek and Cass at the Adairsville Swim Center. The Cartersville combined score of 407 easily defeated Coahulla Creek with 272 and Cass at 154. The Lady Canes accumulated 263 of those points while the Hurricanes totaled 144. Coahulla Creek led the three boys teams with 173 points. On a night when every local high school team was in action, the Cass boys, Excel Christian boys, and Woodland girls came away with victories. CASS BOYS 77, ROME 54 The Cass boys took a 20-12 lead after the opening eight minutes Tuesday night in Rome and never trailed in a 23-point win over the host Wolves. The Colonels led 40-30 at halftime and 61-43 after three quarters. Cass was led by Zaylan Chaney’s 29-point performance. Braxton Benham poured in 15 points. C.J. Pipkin was next with nine. Jordan Ford scored seven. Jaquan Heard finished with six points. Ethan McIntyre had five, Zay Jackson four, and Andrew Glaze two points. Justyn Smith led Rome (1-5, 1-3) with 22 points. Cass (7-3, 3-1 Region 7-AAAAA) has home region games Friday and Saturday against Carrollton and Woodland. Saturday’s game at Cass will be the 2nd annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive game. Woodland trailed 14-11 at halftime and 26-21 after three quarters, but rallied in the final eight minutes to outscore Paulding 14-6 to escape with a four-point win. Adairsville (2-5, 0-3) hosts Coahulla Creek Friday night at 7 p.m. and plays at Calhoun Saturday night at 6 p.m. ROME 53, CASS GIRLS 49 The Lady Colonels led early, but struggled at the charity stripe throughout the night in a 53-49 loss Tuesday night at Rome. Cass led 13-11 after one quarter but trailed 25-15 at the intermission. The Lady Colonels pulled to within one point by the end of the third quarter, trailing 32-31. Cass was only 3-for-13 from the free throw line in the contest. “The missed free throws killed us,” said Cass head coach Burt Jackson. “I’m proud of how we played in a tough environment, but I feel like those misses were the difference.” Claire Davis led the Lady Colonels with 22 points. Londaisha Smith followed with 12. Ariana Hames scored six. Haley Johnson had five points. Keara McDaniel and Justice Bennett added two points apiece. Treneisha Adams and Amberly Brown led Rome with 15 and 13 points, respectively. The Lady Wolves improved to 6-0 for the season and 4-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (5-2, 2-2) will try to bounce back Friday night in a home game against Carrollton and will host Woodland Saturday at 3 p.m. NORTH PAULDING 51, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 27 Aliyah Washington led the visiting Wolfpack and all scorers Tuesday night at the Storm Center as North Paulding defeated Cartersville 51-27. North Paulding led 8-4 after one quarter, but dominated the second period by outscoring Cartersville 19-4 in the period. The Wolfpack led 37-16 after three quarters. Arianna Cochran scored eight points and had five assists for the Lady Canes. Lexi Henderson scored five points. Lehla Thomas finished with 10 rebounds and four points. North Paulding improved to 8-2 with their non-region win. Cartersville (2-2) will play in the Rome News Tribune Holiday Tournament next Monday against Armuchee at 4 p.m. at Georgia Highlands College. NORTH PAULDING 47, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 39 The host Wolfpack improved to 2-6 with an eight-point win over the visiting Cartersville boys in their season opener.

Three Bartow County Recreation Department soccer teams finished as Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA) state runners-up this past weekend in the 2019 state tournament played at Nix Complex Vining Field and Braoddus/Durkin Soccer Complex Friday and Saturday. The Bartow U10 Girls, U12 Girls, and U12 Boys teams all reached their championship matches before falling. Two other Bartow U8 teams also reached the state tournament but lost their opening matches. The Bartow U10 Girls defeated Walton County 4-1 in the state semifinals Saturday. Braylynn Martin and Addi Jerauld scored two goals each for the locals. In the U10 state championship later in the day, Columbia County scored the only goal of the game with about nine minutes remaining to edge Bartow U10, 1-0. The U12 Bartow girls beat Walton County 4-0 Friday night in the state quarterfinals. Ella Edwards, Carly Edwards, Ava Alston, and Emma Edwards scored one goal each for Bartow. In Saturday’s U12 semifinals, Ella Edwards scored the game’s only goal as Bartow edged Long County, 1-0, before the local team lost in the championship game 3-0 to Jackson County. The Bartow County U12 Boys reached their state championship game with a 3-0 victory over Dalton. They lost in the championship match, 1-0, to Rome. The two Bartow County U8 teams both lost opening round games at the state tournament. Idah Banda scored the only goal for U8 Bartow Rogers in a 6-1 loss to Dalton II. U8 Bartow Castro lost to Dalton II on Saturday, 7-1.

It was another big week for local athletes around the country. Adairsville’s Vic Beasley Jr., had a pair of sacks and forced two fumbles Sunday afternoon as the Atlanta Falcons routed the visiting Carolina Panthers 40-20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Cartersville’s Trevor Lawrence established a new Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Game record with four touchdown passes as the Clemson Tigers blew out Virginia 62-17. In college hoops action, two local athletes recorded double-doubles while many others made major contributions in their teams’ performances. NFL VIC BEASLEY, JR. — Atlanta Falcons (5th year pro; OLB; Clemson; Adairsville HS)… Beasley had four tackles including a pair of quarterback sacks and two forced fumbles Sunday as the Falcons defeated the visiting Carolina Panthers 40-20. The 27-year-old now has 23 tackles and six sacks this season. Atlanta (4-9) travels to the west coast Sunday to challenge the San Francisco 49ers. COLLEGE FOOTBALL KURTIS FEANNY — Lenoir-Rhyne University (So., OL, Woodland HS)… normally a starter at guard, Feanny was in the offensive line rotation as the Bears fell in the third round of the NCAA Division II playoffs Saturday to visiting West Florida, 43-38. The LRU offense powered to 438 total yards but lost to the high powered offense of the Argonauts. Feanny appeared in 10 of the Bears 14 games this season as Lenoir-Rhyne finished 13-1 and won the South Atlantic Conference title. TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (So., QB, Cartersville HS)… set an ACC Championship Game record with four touchdown passes, three of which went to Tee Higgins. The Tigers scored on their first five possessions en route to 619 total yards and a 62-17 win over Virginia. Lawrence was 16-for-22 for 302 passing yards and extended his streak of consecutive games with three or more touchdown passes to eight. Clemson, which advances to the Fiesta Bowl and a fifth-straight College Football Playoff appearance against Ohio State, won its 19th ACC Championship. The Tigers are 13-0. JACOB POTTER — Kennesaw State University (So., LS, Adairsville HS)… snapped for three punts, two field goals, and a pair of extra points in the 9th-ranked Owls’ FCS second round playoff loss to 3rd-ranked Weber State. KSU,who finished the season with an 11-3 record, led 17-9 late in the second quarter in Ogden, Utah, but Weber State scored 17 unanswered points in a 19-minute stretch across the second and third quarters on their way to a 26-20 win. VOLLEYBALL NEDU EVANS — Augusta University (Fr., MH, Cartersville HS)… the Jaguars’ historic season came to an end Saturday with a NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen loss to Carson-Newman 3-0. The match was the Championship match of the Southeast Regional. Evans was a starter and played in all three sets of the final match. She accumulated a dig, two kills, and four blocks in the loss. In the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, Augusta beat USC-Aiken and Wingate. Evans totaled 15 kills and three digs in those two victories. Augusta finished the season with a 29-9 record and a Peach Belt Conference title. WRESTLING KYLE GOLLHOFER — University of Northern Iowa (Fr., Woodland HS)… placed fourth in the 125-pound division at the Buena Vista University Open Saturday in Storm Lake, Iowa. Gollhofer won by major decision over Dylan Albrecht of Wartburg; won by fall over Camron Neal of Ellsworth CC; and won by decision over Jake Gilva of Minnesota. He was injured in the semifinal match with Tanner Jordan of Jackrabbit Wrestling Club and was forced to medically forfeit the match. The Panthers host the UNI Open this Saturday. BASKETBALL JACQUEZ FOUNTAIN — Albany Tech (Fr., G, Cass HS)… had a double-double last Monday night with 11 rebounds and a blocked shot as the Titans beat Brewton Parker JV 89-79. He then scored 21 points with five rebounds and two assists Saturday in a 94-93 double-overtime loss at Enterprise State CC. Results for Sunday’s home game against Atlanta Community Christian were not available. Fountain is currently the second leading scorer for the Titans averaging almost 16 points per game. The Cass wrestling team won the Peachtree Ridge Lion Duals Saturday by winning five straight matches. The win in Suwanee comes on the heels of a sweep of Friday night matches at the Adairsville duals meet. Cass won its pool with victories over Central Gwinnett, Stephenson, and Southeast Whitfield. The Cass girls and boys basketball teams both defeated visiting East Paulding in Region 7-AAAAA action Saturday. The Excel Christian Academy boys picked up their first win of the season and the Cartersville and Adairsville girls teams also collected non-region victories. CASS BOYS 79, EAST PAULDING 76 Jaquan Heard knocked down a three-pointer with one second remaining Saturday afternoon to lift the Cass Colonels to a 79-76 Region 7-AAAAA victory over visiting East Paulding. In a game that remained close throughout, Cass trailed 20-19 after one quarter and held a 36-34 lead at halftime. The Colonels led 59-56 after three quarters. “I love our tough defensive effort tonight,” said Cass head coach Sean Glaze. “C.J. Pipkin took three charges and Braxton Benham had six steals.” Heard and Pipkin led five Cass scorers with 11 or more points. They each had 19. Jordan Ford and Zaylan Chaney scored 13 each while Benham finished with 11 points. Andrew Glaze and Ethan McIntyre added two points apiece. Sean Rutledge had a game-high 29 points for the visiting Raiders. Teammates Sebastian Tidor and Kristian Ford followed with 23 and 12 points, respectively. With the loss, East Paulding falls to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in region games. Cass (6-3, 2-1) travels to region foe Rome Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. tip. CASS GIRLS 62, EAST PAULDING 55 Claire Davis scored 27 points and Londaisha Smith added 20 as the Lady Colonels won for the fifth time this season. Cass jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the opening eight minutes and held a 26-15 advantage at halftime. The Cass lead was 38-30 after three periods. Ariana Hames had five points for the Lady Colonels. Haley Johnson and Keara McDaniel totaled four points each while Taryn Callahan added two points. Faith Lovejoy led East Paulding (2-5, 1-3) with 15 points. The Cass girls (5-1, 2-1 Region 7-AAAAA) travel to Rome Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 47, PEPPERELL 43 Lehla Thomas scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Arianna Cochran scored 15 points and dished out five assists as the Lady Canes beat visiting Pepperell, 47-43. “We played good defense today,” said Lady Canes head coach Cindy Moore. “Our defense was the difference.” Naijah Evans added six points for Cartersville. Pepperell (4-3) was led by Jacey Blanton’s nine points. Cartersville led 14-12 after the first quarter, but the visiting Dragons held a 24-22 lead at halftime. EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 73, STRATFORD ACADEMY 63 Rayshawn Womack scored a game-high 34 points Saturday afternoon as the Excel Christian Academy Eagles earned their initial win of the season at home over Stratford Academy from Macon. ECA led at each quarter stop with a 19-9 lead after one quarter. A 38-27 advantage at halftime and a 53-41 lead through three quarters on their way to a 10-point win. Jakaden Barkley scored 12 points for Excel. Jake Murray finished with nine points. Brenden Quillin added seven. Kahlil Holley and Trippe Anderson contributed six and five points, respectively. Keondre Glover led Stratford with 17 points. Mekhi Lyder scored 15 and Jack Miscall added 14 for the visiting Eagles. The loss evened Stratford Academy’s season record at 3-3. Adairsville led 23-15 at the intermission and led 32-22 heading into the final quarter. Lexie Childers led all scorers with 18 points for Adairsville. Haley Stiles followed with 17 points and Alexa Varner added nine. Erin Armstrong and Destiny Lord scored 11 each for Temple. Esther Jacobson added 10. Temple slipped to 1-7 on the season with their loss. Adairsville (2-4, 0-2) will look for its first Region 6-AAA win of the year Tuesday night at Sonoraville at 6 p.m. TEMPLE 38, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 37 Mekhilen Stegall scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the first quarter as Temple took a 19-9 lead after one quarter, but some lock-down defense by Adairsville’s Savaun Henderson kept allowed his team to get back into the contest. Adairsville led 24-23 at halftime and 30-27 after three quarters in the battle of Tigers, but it was Temple who outscored Adairsville 11-7 in the final period to escape with a one-point, non-region win. T.J. Printup finished with nine points for Adairsville. Conner Crunkleton and Henderson added seven each. Gaven Crunkleton scored six.
