  • Tigers win Region 7-AAA opener at LaFayette

September 20, 2025 The Adairsville Tigers showcased their resilience and defensive prowess, defeating the LaFayette Ramblers 27-10 in a Region 7-AAA opener at LaFayette High School on Friday night. The game kicked off with both teams trading blows.  With 8:16 left in the first quarter, Adairsville struck first as Colt Sanford capped a 6-play, 53-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful PAT from Cooper Souders to take a 7-0 lead.  LaFayette responded late in the quarter, when Jayvien Williams broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run with just 40.8 seconds remaining. His scamper tied the score at 7-7 after Harrison Gilstrap’s PAT. The second quarter saw a defensive battle, with the only notable play being an interception by Adairsville’s Sanford at the 50-yard line off a pass from LaFayette quarterback Dax Edwards with 8:43 left.  Neither team could capitalize further before halftime, leaving the score knotted at 7-7. LaFayette took the lead early in the third quarter when a 6-play, 18-yard drive culminated in a 32-yard field goal by Gilstrap. The successful kick gave the Ramblers a 10-7 edge with 9:31 remaining.  However, Adairsville’s offense found its rhythm in the fourth quarter, led by running back Jake Barszcz. With 9:03 left, Barszcz powered through for a 16-yard touchdown run, finishing a 9-play, 49-yard drive to put the Tigers ahead 14-10 after the PAT. Just over a minute later, Barszcz struck again, breaking free for a 19-yard touchdown run on a single-play drive, extending the lead to 21-10. The Tigers sealed the victory with 5:17 remaining when Barszcz intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. Though the PAT was unsuccessful, Adairsville’s 27-10 lead proved insurmountable for LaFayette. Quarterback Braxton Elrod completed 8 of 16 passes for 119 yards. Barszcz finished with 73 rushing yards on seven carries. Jayvian Carson added 33 yards rushing on eight attempts. Sanford, Westin Crisp, and Torron Hale caught two passes each and combined for 81 receiving yards. The Tigers (2-3, 1-0) aim to build on their region win as they host the defending AAA state champion, Calhoun, next Friday. Meanwhile, the Ramblers (3-2, 0-1) aim to rebound when they travel to face Ridgeland in Rossville. ~~ Larry Gardner contributed to this report

  • Colonels dominate Cedartown in region rout

September 20, 2025 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com Jah Abdullah-Kortney (5) had two touchdown receptions in the Colonels' win over Cedartown. The 10th-ranked Cass Colonels showcased their offensive and defensive firepower, rolling to a 44-17 victory over the Cedartown Bulldogs at Cochran Stadium on Friday night in a Region 7-AAAA matchup. Cass took advantage of four Cedartown fumbles. Quarterback Brodie McWhorter threw four touchdown passes, and running back Kalil Charles rushed for over 100 yards in the Colonels' victory. The game started with a miscue for Cedartown, as they fumbled the opening kickoff. Cass’ Demarcus Balanger recovered the loose ball at the Bulldogs’ 46-yard line and set up the Colonels’ first scoring opportunity. Three plays later, McWhorter connected with Elijah Slocum on a short pass that Slocum turned into a 46-yard touchdown scamper with 11:08 left in the first quarter. Anthony Quijada’s extra point gave the Colonels a 7-0 lead.  After both teams traded three-and-outs on their next two possessions, Cass extended the lead when a Cedartown rushing attempt went awry. Cass linebacker Naz Fleurine put a helmet on the football and knocked it loose. The ball bounced into the end zone, where Bulldogs’ quarterback Wyatt Mosley fell on it for a safety with 5:38 remaining in the first, making it 9-0. Cass defenders stop a Cedartown ball carrier. The Colonels forced four turnovers in their 44-17 win. Cass’ next drive stalled after 12 plays, turning the ball over on downs at the Cedartown 33. The Bulldogs capitalized, driving 65 yards in 9 plays, sparked by a 39-yard pass from Mosley to Jaylen Johnson, to set up a 27-yard field goal by Branson Adams with 8:13 left in the second quarter, trimming the score to 9-3.  Cass answered with a 68-yard, six-play drive, capped by a McWhorter 19-yard touchdown pass to Jah Abdullah-Kortney with 5:50 before halftime. The scoring play pushed the Colonels’ lead to 16-3. Cedartown’s troubles continued when their next possession ended in a fumble after a short pass from Mosley. Cass defenders Mason Tompkins and Cam Beauford sandwiched the receiver with a hit that knocked the ball loose. Linebacker Malachi Harris scooped up the loose ball and raced 40 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 23-3 with 4:57 left in the half.  Demarcus Ballanger looks for extra yardage behind a block from Jah Abdullah Kortney. The Bulldogs fumbled again on their next drive at their own 36, and Cass pounced. That fumble was again caused by Tompkins and recovered by defensive lineman Sabastian Castanada. After two runs totaling 18 yards by Charles, McWhorter found Abdullah-Kortney for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 4:05 remaining, making it 30-3.  The Colonels weren’t done in the half. Fleurine intercepted a Mosley slant pass on Cedartown’s next offensive play and returned it 45 yards for another defensive score with 3:49 left in the half. The 28 unanswered points in just over two minutes sent Cass into the break with a commanding 37-3 lead. With a running clock in the second half, Cedartown showed fight.  Jaylen Johnson opened the third quarter by intercepting a McWhorter pass and returning it 35 yards for a touchdown, with Adams’ PAT cutting the deficit to 37-10 with 10:19 left in the third.  The Bulldogs later drove deep into Cass territory in the fourth quarter, aided by three pass interference penalties, but fumbled at the 28-yard line, with Cass’ John Abernathy recovering.  Cass running back Kalil Charles finds a crease created by his offensive line. The Colonels responded with a 72-yard, seven-play drive, finished by McWhorter’s 16-yard touchdown pass to tight end Chase Tatum with 6:25 remaining, pushing the score to 44-10.  Cedartown managed a late 78-yard drive, with Mosley scoring on a 2-yard keeper with 1:00 left, finalizing the score at 44-17. McWhorter led Cass with four touchdown passes. The Mississippi State commit was 7-for-20 for 122 yards with one interception. Abdullah-Kortney hauled in two scores and had three catches for 40 yards. Elijah Slocum had three receptions for 68 yards and one score, and Tatum added his 14-yard touchdown reception. Charles rushed 20 times for 106 yards. Balanger had four carries for 18 yards, and McWhorter added one five-yard rushing attempt. The Colonels’ defense was relentless, forcing four turnovers, including two defensive touchdowns. For Cedartown, Johnson’s pick-six and Mosley’s late score were highlights in a tough night marred by turnovers. Cass (5-1, 2-0) extended their winning streak to five games and will travel to Woodland next Friday. Cedartown (2-4, 0-2) looks to regroup when it hosts Hiram on Friday.

  • Canes race past Woodland on homecoming

Scott Barkley / CanesAthletics.com Cartersville's Maddox Davis races toward the end zone with an escort from teammates Davis Waddell (0), Tyon Coe (28) and Athens Davenport (35). Madoxx Davis averaged 21 yards per catch alongside a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as Cartersville built a 30-0 lead in the first quarter on the way to a 44-7 win over Woodland on Sept. 19.   “He’s a special player, and somebody that we’re going to continue to be creative with,” said head coach Conor Foster. “We try to move him around on offense, and he’s playing a ton on defense and special teams. He creates a lot of matchup issues and is such a great competitor. You watch him and you’ll see how he never gives up on a play.” Braylon Hill caught a screen pass from QB Nate Russell and scored a 55-yard touchdown late in the first quarter vs. Woodland. The Canes were already ahead 14-0 when a high snap on a punt attempt brought two more points. On Woodland’s ensuing free kick, Davis settled under the ball at his own 30. Moving up the middle of the field, he broke left for a few steps before ripping across to the right sideline untouched for the score and a 23-0 lead.  The sophomore finished with four catches for 83 yards. He’s second on the team to Georgia-bound Brady Marchese in receptions (16 to 19) and yards (261 to 375).  Marchese has missed a few games. That goes for center Langston Hogg as well, whose absence has led to a reshuffled offensive line and Adam Reed moving from right tackle to snapping the ball. Woodland QB Sammy Ray looks downfield. “I’m just so proud of his leadership,” Foster said of Reed, a senior. “We’ve had three new starters over the last couple of weeks, and Adam has played a different position, so it’s almost like having four new starters. He’s been our senior leader in that group, and I’ve been super proud not only of his effort, but also of his leadership in meetings and ability to stay calm and teach and lead these young guys through some chaotic and exciting times. He’s been the anchor of that group, and I’m really proud of him.” The greatest compliment to Reed may be how the casual fan has barely noticed the change at center.  “Langston’s a great player and one of my best friends in the world. But when somebody goes down, it’s next man up, and I’m comfortable in every position on the line,” said Reed. “I’ve played center before, so I’m confident in my ability to shift throughout the line.” Two early touchdown runs by Tyon Coe – a seven-yarder up the middle and another from 23 yards out – gave the Canes a 14-0 lead. After the safety and Madoxx’s return, Nate Russell hit Braylon Hill on a quick screen for a 55-yard score and 30-0 advantage with 1:06 to play in the opening quarter.  Elijah Peeks (54) tackles Woodland's Solomon James in Cartersville's 44-7 win on Friday. A three-yard touchdown run by Tripp Chatmon and one by PJ Richards from five yards stretched the lead to 44-0 at halftime.  The Canes’ defense, primarily of backups in the second half, stopped two Woodland drives on Cooper Melvin’s interception and AJ Townsend’s fumble recovery. The Wildcats would get on the board, though, with a three-yard touchdown run by Solomon James at 1:06 left in the third quarter.  Cartersville improves to 6-0 and 2-0 in 4A Region 7. After an off week, the Canes travel to Cass on Oct. 3. The Colonels (5-1 and 2-0) are averaging over 36 points per game and drummed Cedartown on Friday night, 44-17. Woodland (0-4, 0-1) will host Cass this Friday, Sept. 26. Canes' RB Tyon Coe (28) breaks for one of his first-quarter touchdowns, chased by Woodland's Preston Sorrells.
