Adairsville softball got home runs Wednesday from Taylor Evans and Brie Patterson to go with some solid relief pitching by Megan Gregory to hold off the Ridgeland Panthers, 5-4, in a Region 6-AAA battle in Tiger Valley. Ridgeland built a 3-0 lead midway through the third inning before the Tigers offense got rolling. Annalee Morris produced a two-run single in the bottom of the third to narrow the Tigers’ deficit to 3-2. Adairsville tied the game in the fourth inning following Gregory’s RBI double. The Tigers then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with solo home runs by Patterson and Evans. The Panthers scored a run in the top of the sixth, but got no closer. Jordan Clay (3.2 IP, 3ER, 8H) split the pitching duties with Gregory (3.1 IP, 1ER, 5H, 5K) who picked up the win. Desiree Powell had four hits for Ridgeland including a pair of doubles. The loss dropped Ridgeland to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in region play. Adairsville (6-6-1, 2-3) hosts Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Woodland softball cruised to a 12-0 non-region win at home Wednesday night over Wheeler in just four innings. Ashlyn Baines (3.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 3BB) and Peyton Dorn (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H) combined in the pitching circle for the shutout. The Lady Cats led 2-0 after two innings before scoring five runs in the third and five more in the fourth to close out the game by run rule. Eight different Woodland hitters had one hit apiece in the win. Dorn (2 RBIs), Baines (RBI), Jordan Hammonds (RBI), Brooke Edmondson (RBI), Ashlyn Dowdy (RBI), Alana Carnes (RBI), Karmen Zeferino (RBI), and Elizabeth Hartsfield had one hit each. Bailey Gerstner and Lanie Calhoun added one RBI each. The loss dropped Wheeler to 3-10 on the season. Woodland (7-7, 3-3 Region 7-5A) hosts Hiram Thursday in a region contest.

In an error plagued game Wednesday night at the Cass Athletic Complex, Calhoun took advantage of nine unearned runs on the Yellow Jackets way to a 12-6 win over the Cass Lady Colonels. The two teams combined for 13 miscues in the contest with all six of the Cass runs unearned. The visiting Yellow Jackets led 7-0 when Cass finally broke the ice to get on the scoreboard. The Colonels narrowed the margin to 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but that would be as close as they would get. Calhoun added five more runs in the sixth inning for a 12-5 lead and Cass managed one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Avery Greeson and Athens Hudson combined in the pitching circle for Calhoun to limit Cass to only five hits. Greeson earned the win with four innings of work. Hudson was credited with a save. Sydney Bullard, Aryian Berner, and Maggy Abernathy led the Jackets offense combining for six hits (two each) and four RBIs. Emma Gibson (5.1 IP, 10R, 3ER, 6H, 5BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss for Cass. Alexis Woods (1.2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB) closed out the final five outs in the circle for the Colonels. Darianna Sosa had two hits and two RBIs to pace the Cass offense. Alexis Woods also finished with two hit including a double. Ansley Hight added one hit and one RBI. Calhoun improved to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (6-9, 3-3) travels to Hiram next Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. and will host Cartersville next Thursday at 5:55 p.m.

Cartersville volleyball split matches Tuesday night at Harrison High School, falling to the host Hoyas before defeating the Marist War Eagles. Harrison topped the Lady Canes 25-22 and 25-16 in the Cartersville opener. Lauren Lawson had nine kills and Ailee England followed with five. Lawson added two blocks and five digs. England finished with six digs and an assist. Lily Gochee contributed 17 assists. In Cartersville’s 25-20, 25-20 win over Marist Lawson finished with seven kills, two aces, and three digs. England had six kills, two aces, one block, and seven digs. Tennessee Abernathy totaled five kills, three blocks, and two digs. Lily Gochee (5) and Mia Nicklas (7) combined for a dozen digs. Gochee added 18 assists. Harrison improved to 9-9 on the season. Marist dropped to 6-13. Cartersville (11-11) travels to Northwest Whitfield Thursday for a 5:30 start. WOODLAND FALLS AT WOODSTOCK Woodland volleyball fell in straight sets Tuesday night at Woodstock, 25-9 and 25-8. The Lady Cats also lost in straight sets to North Paulding. Adairsville volleyball defeated Cass in straight sets Tuesday night 25-13 and 25-17. The Tigers celebrated their seniors Richlyn Blair and Annie McCormick in the victory. Blair totaled eight kills, one block, and one assist. while McCormick added a pair of kills and three assists. Jayna Wilson contributed nine kills and three blocks for Adairsville. Emma Ridley had five kills and Addie Pearson finished with five kills, one block, and one assist. Tamira Feanny had 3 blocks and 2 kills for Cass. Jenesys Moctezuma added a pair of service aces for the Lady Colonels. The loss drops Cass to 8-9-1 on the season. The Lady Colonels travel to Rockmart Thursday where they will play Unity Christian and the host Yellow Jackets. Adairsville (6-8-2) plays Ringgold and Ridgeland Thursday at Ridgeland High School.

Region 7-AAAAA co-leaders Cartersville and Calhoun both collected league wins Tuesday night while the Cass game at Dalton played into the fifth inning before being called off due to weather. CARTERSVILLE 10, HIRAM 1 Cartersville scored eight runs early and totaled ten hits Tuesday night in a 10-1 Region 7-5A win at Hiram. The win by Cartersville keeps the Hurricanes in a first place tie with Calhoun in the league standings. Meanwhile, Lady Canes hurler Ava Perkins yielded a run but tossed a five inning, no-hitter to pick up the pitching victory. The Hurricanes scored six runs in the top of the first inning on four hits and three walks. They added two more runs in the top of the second on three additional hits. Cartersville added two more runs in the fifth inning on solo home runs by Jordan Bishop and Ansleigh Tilley. Bishop finished with three hits and three RBIs. Kiley Arnold followed with two hits including a double and one RBI. Layne Callan (RBI), Perkins (RBI), Elizabeth Nelson, and Mikey Lewis had the other Cartersville base hits. Hiram falls to 5-6-2 overall and 1-5 in region play. Cartersville (6-5-1, 5-1) hosts Dalton in another region contest Thursday at 5:55 p.m. CALHOUN 5, WOODLAND 3 Woodland softball dropped a 5-3 Region 7-5A decision at Calhoun Tuesday night with the Yellow Jackets remaining in a first place tie in the league standings. Calhoun built a 5-1 lead by the fifth inning before Woodland challenged in the final frame. The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the third inning on three hits and a walk. They added two more on a two-run homer by Aryian Berner in the fourth inning and posted another insurance run in the fifth on four singles. Trailing 2-0 Woodland narrowed the margin to 2-1 when Peyton Dorn reached on a dropped third strike, moved to third on a pair of groundouts, and scored on a passed ball. Ashlyn Baines drove in a run for the Lady Cats in the top of the seventh with a groundout and Woodland added a final run on a Calhoun infield error for a 5-3 final. Haley Collum (6 IP, 5ER, 10H, 1BB, 2K) took the pitching loss for the Wildcats. Bailey Sakacsi, Jordan Hammonds, and Alana Carnes had the only Woodland base hits in the game off Calhoun winning pitcher, Ansley Hall. Calhoun improved to 10-3 on the season and 5-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (6-7, 3-3) steps out of region play to host Wheeler Wednesday at 5:55 p.m. and will entertain region foe Hiram Thursday at 5:55 p.m. CASS AT DALTON RAINED OUT The Lady Colonels had built an 8-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning Tuesday night at Dalton when rains halted play. The game was ultimately ruled a rainout and since the teams had not completed five innings, it must be replayed in its entirety. As the MiLB seasons for Cartersville products Sam Howard and Anthony Seigler begin to wind down in September, collegiate athletes with Bartow County ties hit the gridiron, court, pitch, and trail to launch their Fall 2022 seasons. This week’s update includes notes on local athletes in college football, cross country, volleyball, and soccer contributing with their programs across the country. Former Cartersville Hurricane JaCorey Johns, now at Wake Forest, had three tackles this week and a pair of quarterback hurries as the Demon Deacons won their season opener. Meanwhile, Western Kentucky freshman runner Rylee Evans — a Woodland grad — was the top finisher for the Hilltoppers and led her team to a sixth place finish of 21 teams at the Foothills Invitational. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … made three appearances last week for the Mud Hens at Rochester. Wednesday, the southpaw earned his seventh hold of the season by retiring the final two outs of the eighth inning in a 5-4 win. Thursday night he was touched for three earned runs on two hits and a walk in the sixth inning when pitching teammate Angel De Jesus replaced Howard and surrendered a three run home run. Two of those runs (base runners) were inherited. The 29-year-old faired better on Sunday collecting his second win of the season in relief. Howard entered with two outs in the sixth inning and sat down four straight batters — three by strikeout — as the Mud Hens held on for a 6-3 win. He is now 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA in 33 MiLB appearances this season across 29.2 innings. He has a 35:20 strikeout to walk ratio with a 1.25 WHIP. The Mud Hens (70-57) are in third place in the International League’s West Division and 8.5 games behind division-leading Nashville with just 21 games remaining in the regular season. Toledo has a six game home series Tuesday through Sunday against St. Paul. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (5th yr. pro; High Class-A New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS) … saw action in four home games last week against Jersey Shore going only 1-for-12 at the plate. The lone hit was a double that produced two RBIs. He added two more RBIs Saturday without benefit of a hit. He drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and the other with a bases loaded walk. The switch hitting catcher has appeared in 92 games this season and has a .229 batting average in just under 300 official at bats. The 23-year-old first round draft selection has seven home runs, 43 RBIs, and has stolen 16 bases. The Renegades (69-56 overall) are 35-24 in the second half standings and 0.5 games behind the Brooklyn Cyclones with just six games to play. Hudson Valley, who needs to win the second half to make the playoffs, travels to Wilmington for a Tuesday through Sunday series this week wrapping up the regular season slate. The Woodland girls placed third and the Woodland boys were fourth Saturday hosting the 16th annual Run at the Rock. The Cartersville girls placed 10th and the Canes’ boys finished sixth. The Woodland girls third place finish had all five counting runners in the top 30. The King’s Academy won the girls championship with Marietta finishing as runner-up. East Paullding and Coosa closed out the top five of 14 teams. The Lady Canes placed 10th in the race that included 118 runners on the 5K course. Sophia Cook (19:52) and Alishia Cook (20:37) of Coosa finished first and second to capture the individual champion and runner-up slots. Woodland senior Emma Segars (22:18) placed fifth. Other scoring runs for the Lady Cats included Olivia Berry (13th, 23:13), Danielle Thayer (15th, 23:24), Miranda Pelow (29th, 24:22), and Abby George (30th, 24:32). Cartersville was led by the 12th place finish of Anna Grace Boone (22:53). Other Lady Canes included Samantha Herrera (46th, 26:04), Meredith Gaines (54th, 26:37), Julianne Latham (75th, 28:02), and Rileigh Worthan (108th, 30:37). The Woodland boys placed fourth, the Cartersville boys were sixth, and the Cass boys were 10th in the 16-team field that included 129 runners. Marietta won the boys championship followed by Darlington and Cedartown. Duluth placed fifth. Eli Corn of East Paulding was the boys individual winner. He completed the Woodland High course in 16:36 just ahead of the Wildcats’ Tyler Jones who finished in 17:03. Malachi Vosburgh led the Cartersville boys in 17:53 with a fifth place finish. Rounding out the Woodland scoring runs were Drew Thayer (20th, 18:52), Landon McSwain (23rd, 18:54), Juan Mendoza (25th, 18:56), Andy Forsyth (45th, 19:47) and Rowan Lee (46th, 19:50). Top finishers for the Hurricanes included Omar Pina (19th, 18:50), Hayden Mitchell (31st, 19:22), Barrett Stepp (36th, 19:34), and Paul Hyman (54th, 19:58). Leonardo Galeana (59th, 20:07) paced the Cass runners. He was followed by Colonels teammates Jake Wright (67th, 20:30), Sawyer Foy (74th, 20:46), Andrew Rampey (79th, 20:53), and Adam Pierce (91st, 21:38). Next Saturday, the Cartersville teams along with the Cass boys will compete in the Carrollton Orthopaedic Invitational on the GHSA State Championship course at Carrollton High School. Woodland will participate next Saturday in the Big Peach Mustang Stampede hosted by Kennesaw Mountain High School.

Cartersville rallied from a 20-point deficit Friday night for a road win while Cass cruised at home for the Colonels first win of the season. Woodland fell to visiting Model in overtime and Adairsville suffered a loss at high-scoring Rabun County. CARTERSVILLE 28, ALLATOONA 20 Canes’ freshman quarterback Nate Russell was forced into Friday night’s game at Allatoona in a tough situation. Cartersville’s starting quarterback Paul Gamble had been knocked out of the game late in the first half with the Hurricanes trailing the Buccaneers 17-0. A 29-yard field goal by Allatoona on the Bucs first possession of the second half made the score 20-0 and the night looked grim for the Cartersville faithful. The ninth grade signal caller responded in a big way, however, leading Class 5A top-ranked Cartersville to four touchdowns in the final 13 minutes of the game and a 28-20 come-from-behind victory. Russell connected with Collin Fletcher for a 69-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the third quarter to make the score 20-7. Four minutes into the fourth quarter, Malachi Jeffries darted into the end zone with a 13-yard run narrowing the lead to 20-14. Russell then found Ja’mauri Brice with a 27-yard scoring strike that gave Cartersville a 21-20 lead with 5:53 remaining. Allatoona fumbled on its next possession at its own 12-yard line leading to the Hurricanes’ and Russell’s final score. With 3:04 to play, the freshman signal caller scored on a 4-yard keeper making the score 28-20. An interception on Allatoona’s next possession allowed the Canes to run out the clock. The loss dropped the Buccaneers to 0-3 on the season. Cartersville (3-0) hosts Columbia next Friday night in a 7:30 p.m. start at Weinman Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on WBHF-Cartersville (100.3 FM / AM1450) with pregame coverage beginning at 6 p.m. CASS 58, DREW 15 Devin Henderson caught a 13-yard touchdown pass, ran for a 47-yard touchdown, and threw a 17-yard scoring strike to help guide Cass to a 58-15 home win over Drew Friday night at Cochran Stadium. Mac Nelson added touchdown runs of 12-, 15-, and 2-yards for the Colonels and freshman quarterback Brodie McWhorter contributed a pair of first quarter touchdown passes. Colonels receiver Sacovie White hauled in touchdown receptions from 16- and 17-yards. He also added a 63-yard punt return for a touchdown. Cass led 16-0 at the end of the first quarter and built a 30-0 lead before taking a 51-13 lead to the intermission. Cameron Prather threw for the two Titans touchdowns. Jacobi Carter caught a 32 yard touchdown pass and Makel Lloyd hauled in a 52-yard scoring pass. The loss dropped Drew to 0-2 on the season, Cass (1-2) travels to Adairsville next Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The game will be broadcast on BartowSportsZone.com with pregame coverage at 6 p.m. and kickoff at 7:30 p.m. MODEL 17, WOODLAND 14 (overtime) Model battled back in the second half Friday night at Woodland to send the game to overtime tied 14-14. The Blue Devils’ defense then forced a turnover on Woodland’s first possession of overtime setting up placekicker Daniel Veillon’s 26-yard game winning field goal on the ensuing possession as the Blue Devils escaped with a 17-14 win. Chase Carson capped a quick three play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run that gave Woodland an early 7-0 lead. Two pass completions by Wildcats’ quarterback Brelace Williams set up the opening drive score. In the second quarter, Model’s Jeremiah Gamble tied the game with a 25-yard run. Model tied the score again with a methodical drive on the opening possession of the second half. The Blue Devils drove 74 yards on 14 plays and used almost seven minutes of the third period. Quarterback Dillon Silver finished off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown toss to Jeremias Heard. Veillon’s PAT kick knotted the score at 14-14. Following a scoreless fourth quarter, the game headed to overtime. Model won the overtime coin toss and chose to go on defense first. On third down for Woodland, a Williams pass was deflected and picked off by Silver. Model then ran two plays for short yardage before lining up for Veillon’s game-winning field goal on third down. RABUN COUNTY 72, ADAIRSVILLE 36 Rabun County quarterback Keegan Stover and the Wildcats tossed seven touchdown passes Friday night including two of 50+ yards in a 72-36 home win over Adairsville. The Wildcats added a pair of rushing touchdowns including a 40-yard dash by Lang Windham to go with a 38-yard field goal in their victory. Rabun, ranked 4th in Class A Division I, led 49-21 at halftime. Adairsville’s Jonathon Gough connected on a 53-yard touchdown pass to Chris Roper that made the score 21-7 at the time. Roper added two other rushing touchdowns while Caden Copeland and Ethan Blome also added touchdown runs for Adairsville in their loss. Rabun County improved to 3-0 on the season. Adairsville (1-1) hosts Cass next Friday in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The game will be broadcast on BartowSportsZone.com with pregame coverage starting at 6 p.m.

Cass softball lost both games of a non-region doubleheader at Pickens Thursday night while Adairsville suffered a 9-1 region loss at LaFayette. PICKENS 8, CASS 0 Pickens hurlers Emma Black and Cheyenne Coleman combined for five strikeouts and shutout Cass in the first of two games Thursday evening in Jasper. The Colonels were limited to just four hits in the loss. Alexis Woods, Haylee Dishmon, Ansley Hight, and KK Evans had one hit each. Emma Gibson (5 IP, 8R, 6ER, 9H, 5BB) was the losing pitcher for Cass. PICKENS 10, CASS 2 Lexi Grizzle picked up where the two Pickens pitchers left off in the first game as the Lady Dragons won Game 2 of Thursday’s doubleheader with Cass. Grizzle tossed a complete game for Pickens, struck out four, and allowed only three Cass hits. Reese Howard had a double and one RBI for the Colonels. Haylee Dishmon and Harlee Thomason had the other Cass hits. Bailey York (3 IP, 7R, 6ER, 5H, 5BB) started in the circle for the locals and was tagged with the pitching loss. Alexis Woods (1 IP, 3R, 1ER, 2H) also pitched in the loss. Pickens improved to 9-6 on the season. Cass (6-8, 3-2) returns to Region 7-5A action Tuesday at Dalton with first pitch scheduled for 5:55 p.m. LAFAYETTE 9, ADAIRSVILLE 1 The Adairsville Lady Tigers were limited to just a pair of hits Thursday at LaFayette and dropped a 9-1 Region 6-AAA decision on the Ramblers home field. The game was tied 1-1 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning when LaFayette posted four runs to take control. The Ramblers added four more runs over the final two innings for their victory. Megan Gregory, who suffered the pitching loss, had a double at the plate. McKenzie Pullam had the other Lady Tigers’ base hit. Jordan Clay pitched in relief for Adairsville. LaFayette improved to 9-2-1 overall and 4-0 in region play. Adairsville (5-6-1, 1-3) hosts Ridgeland Wednesday and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Thursday. Both games are 5:30 p.m. starts.

Cass softball scored four times in the top of the sixth inning Wednesday night at Woodland for a come-from-behind 9-6 Region 7-5A victory. The Lady Colonels peppered 15 hits in the contest while pitchers Emma Gibson and Alexis Woods combined their efforts in the circle. Woods (5.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 7H, 2BB, 2K) picked up the pitching win for Cass in relief of the starter Gibson (1.1 IP, 4ER, 2H, 3BB, 2K). Woodland utilized three members of the Lady Cats pitching staff. Peyton Dorn (2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H) was tagged with the pitching loss in relief of Haley Collum (3 IP, 5ER, 10H, 3BB, 2K). Ashlyn Baines (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 2K) also pitched for Woodland. Haylee Dishmon paced the Colonels’ offense with four hits including a double and one RBI. Woods and Reese Howard (RBI) followed with three hits each. Ansley Hight had two hits and three RBIs including a sixth inning, two-run home run that gave Cass a 7-6 lead. Braelyn Franklin, Darianna Sosa (RBI), and Bailey York (2 RBIs) added one hit apiece for the Lady Colonels. Bailey Sakacsi had three hits for Woodland including a double. Dorn contributed a pair of hits and two RBIs. Mackenzie Araya also finished with two hits. Kamryn Smith (RBI) and Alana Carnes added one hit each for the Wildcats. Collum (sac fly) and Jordan Hammonds added one RBI each. Cass (6-6, 3-2) travels to Pickens Thursday for a non-region doubleheader at 5 p.m. Woodland (6-6, 3-2) plays next at Calhoun Tuesday in a 5:55 p.m. start.

Adairsville volleyball lost at Christian Heritage Tuesday night in straight sets falling 25-15 and 25-23. Jenna Claire Hendley had three kills, three blocks, and four digs for the Tigers. Richlyn Blair finished with two kills, two blocks, and four digs. Jayna Wilson had four blocks and four digs. Jordyn Hartline contributed three blocks and one dig. Annie McCormick and Sherry Wells added 11 and nine digs, respectively. The host Lady Lions improved to 9-6 on the season. Adairsville (4-8-2) plays at Excel Christian Academy Thursday at 5 p.m.
