Woodland took St. Pius X to the limit in their state playoffs first round best-of-three series but the Wildcats came up just short in Thursday’s deciding game, 2-1. Julian Wright tripled in the top of the first and scored Woodland’s only run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jakiyon Porter. From there, Wildcats’ pitcher Ayden Ray kept his team in the game without any additional run support. Ray surrendered just two runs (one earned) on two hits and five walks. He struck out seven in six innings of work. The Golden Lions tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. A three-base error and a sacrifice fly drove in the first St. Pius run. The go-ahead and winning run for the Lions came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Two walks and an RBI single by Devin Portee drove in the deciding score. Will Tippett (2 IP, 0R, 3H, 0BB, 1K) tossed a pair of scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh to earn the pitching victory for the Golden Lions. St. Pius starter Trevor Zimmerman worked the first five innings on the mound yielding one earned run on one hit and three walks. He fanned seven. Devin Portee (2 RBIs) and Aiden Portee had the only two St. Pius hits. Chase Carson, Wright (triple), Ray, and Jacob Gravett had one hit each for the Wildcats. St. Pius X advances to the Class 5A Sweet Sixteen where the Golden Lions will host Wayne County. Their best-of-three series begins next Tuesday with a doubleheader. Woodland’s season ends with a 15-18 record.

The top-ranked Cartersville Purple Hurricanes were challenged in the opening game of their first round Class 5A playoff series Wednesday night at Richard Bell Field, but completed a sweep of the visiting Chamblee Bulldogs by winning 4-3 and 14-6 in the best-of-three series. GAME ONE: CARTERSVILLE 4, CHAMBLEE 3 (8 innings) To win the opener, the Hurricanes came from behind in extra innings for a 4-3 victory. Cartersville scored single runs in the first and third innings while Chamblee posted single runs in the third and fifth innings. The Bulldogs went ahead 3-2 in the top of the eighth with three consecutive hits but Cartersville pulled out the win with an RBI single by Caleb Daniel and a Kaden Stephenson pinch-hit, walk-off RBI single to right field. Chamblee starter Noah Harkins (7.2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 9H, 2BB, 7K) suffered the pitching loss for the Bulldogs. David Welsh, Zavier Tsai, and Fabian Walker combined for five hits and three RBIs for Chamblee. Cartersville starting pitcher Ryan Johnson (5 IP, 2R, 1ER, 4H, 2BB, 7K) went five innings in a no-decision effort. Phillip Schiltz (3 IP, 1ER, 4H, 1BB, 5K) picked up the pitching win with three innings of relief. Curt Bonner had three doubles and one RBI. Jake Brasfield followed with a pair of hits. GAME TWO: CARTERSVILLE 14, CHAMBLEE 6 Cartersville scored at least one run in each of the first six innings of Game 2 Wednesday night to close out their first round state playoff series with the visiting Chamblee Bulldogs, 14-6. The second game victory in the doubleheader clinched the best-of-three series and advanced the Hurricanes to next week’s second round Class 5A series where they will host Coffee starting next Tuesday at Richard Bell Field. The Canes led 4-0 midway through the second inning when Chamblee posted its first three-run inning to make the score 4-3. Cartersville kept adding on, however, and built a 9-3 lead before the Bulldogs narrowed the margin to 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth. Five more runs by the Hurricanes in the sixth inning put the game away. Cartersville utilized four pitchers in Game 2. Caden Carroll (2.1 IP, 3ER, 2H, 6BB, 1K) started on the mound and worked into the third inning. Geoffrey Gore (2.1 IP, 3ER, 4H, 1BB, 4K) followed and was relieved by Phillip Schiltz (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) with two outs in the fifth inning. Collin Eaton (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) worked a scoreless seventh inning for the Canes. Caleb Daniel paced the Cartersville offense with three hits including a double and one RBI. The Woodland Wildcats sent their best-of-three, first round state playoff series at St. Pius X in Atlanta to a rubber game on Thursday with a doubleheader split Wednesday night. The host Golden Lions won the first game of the twin bill 2-0 but the Wildcats responded with a 4-3 Game 2 win. The first round series deciding game will be played Thursday in Atlanta at 5:30 p.m. GAME ONE: ST. PIUS X 2, WOODLAND 0 Golden Lions’ pitcher Matt Navarro tossed a complete game four hitter Wednesday to lead St. Pius X to a 2-0 shutout win over Woodland. The senior southpaw struck out eight in recording his win. St. Pius X scored a single run in the first inning and added a second run in the third. Kevin Beirne drove in the first inning run with an RBI single. The third inning run scored after Will Tippett doubled, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Kostopolous. The four Woodland hits were all singles. Chase Carson, Julian Wright, Jacob Gravett, and Rowan Billings had one hit each for the Wildcats. Billings (6 IP, 2R, 1ER, 8H, 0BB, 4K) suffered the disappointing loss despite a complete game effort and surrendering only one earned run. GAME TWO: WOODLAND 4, ST. PIUS X 3 The Wildcats earned a doubleheader split Wednesday night with a 4-3 come-from-behind win at St. Pius X. Playing as the home team in Game 2, Woodland tied the game at 3-3 on a two-out, RBI single by Jackson Rutledge and won the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh when Chase Carson scored on a wild pitch. Both teams scored two runs in the second inning. The Lions utilized a walk, a single, an error, and a fielder’s choice to plate their two runs. In the bottom half of the second, Rutledge doubled home the first Wildcat run and Carson drove in the second run with a single to right field. In the fourth, St. Pius X went up 3-2 on a walk and a pair of two out singles. Woodland pitchers Conner Stermer (2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K) and Hunter Shirley (5 IP, 1ER, 3H, 4BB, 4K) combined on the mound to limit the Golden Lions (21-10) to a single earned run. Rutledge (double, 2 RBIs), Carson (double, RBI), and Jacob Gravett had two hits each in the Wildcats victory. Jakiyon Porter (RBI), Julian Wright, Ayden Ray, and Mason Williams added one hit apiece as Woodland (15-17) out hit St. Pius X ten to four.

Georgia Highlands College softball swept a conference doubleheader Tuesday at East Georgia State CC in Swainsboro. The Chargers won the opener 7-0 and took the second game with an 8-1 final score. Five Chargers produced two hits each and pitcher Gracee Ellis tossed a complete-game, six-hit shutout as Georgia Highlands won the first game of the day. Then the Chargers’ offense pounded out fourteen hits in the second game and cruised to a second win behind another strong pitching performance by Haley Robinson. Ellis struck out two in her shutout. Robinson also fanned two while yielding just one earned run on four hits and four walks. Taylor Justice (2 RBIs), Emma Veitch (2 RBIs), Bradey Tharp, Audrey Johnson (solo HR, RBI), and Robinson each produced two hits for GHC in the first win. Hailey Cronic (double, RBI), Annsley Todd, and Madison Dennis contributed one hit each. In the second game Tuesday, Todd paced the offense with three hits. Tharp (double, 3 RBIs), Allison Deweese (RBI), Dennis, and Cronic produced two hits each. Robinson (2 RBIs), Johnson (double, RBI), and Justice (double) added one hit apiece for the Chargers. The losses dropped the Bobcats to 33-24 on the season and 11-9 in conference play. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Pittsburgh Pirates (9th year pro; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … Following a brief rehab assignment in Bradenton and an appearance with the Marauders, Howard was optioned to the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians by the Pirates for what is expected to be an extended rehab assignment. The southpaw was shut down toward the end of spring training due to a back strain. Last Tuesday, the 29-year-old recorded five outs against the Columbus Clippers yielding one earned run on one hit and one walk. Then Saturday, he worked a one-two-three seventh inning against Columbus with one strikeout. In the victory, Mosby shot 50% from inside the arc (4-for-8), 55.6% from the 3-point line (5-for-9) and 80% from the charity stripe (4-for-5). GOLF BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS) … finished tied for 42nd, with a five-over-par 215 across three rounds, in the SEC Championship April 20-22 at Sea Island Golf Club at St. Simons Island, where the Bulldogs wound up sixth in the stroke-play portion of the event. In match play, Georgia fell in the quarterfinals April 23 to No. 3 seed Florida by a 3-1-1 final score, with Brumlow coming up short by a 5&3 result. Georgia Highlands College softball dropped a home doubleheader Sunday afternoon to conference-leading Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The visiting Fillies (31-15, 15-3 GCAA) won the first game 3-2 and closed out the second game, 16-4. Annsley Todd had one hit in each game for the Chargers including a double and one RBI. Hailey Cronic also finished with one hit in each game. Audrey Johnson contributed a pair of hits in the second game including a two-run home run. Five other Chargers had one hit each in the doubleheader including Madison Dennis, Allison Deweese (RBI), Kyndal Brown, and Bradey Tharp (RBI). Atlanta residents Franco Castro and Tyler Gruca teamed for rounds of 63-63-65—191 (25-under-par) to win the 50th Georgia State Golf Association Four Ball Championship hosted locally this past Friday through Sunday. The 54-hole championship was conducted at the 6,988-yard, par 72 Cartersville Country Club. Castro played collegiately at LSU and Charlotte. He also served as the men’s golf assistant coach at Rutgers. Gruca, an Alpharetta native, played collegiately at Georgia State. While the Atlanta duo captured the prestigious title, local players faired well also. There were six teams with local connections to finished in the championship’s top twenty. Chad Branton (Cartersville) and Christian Raynor (Kennesaw) finished tied for second at 21-under-par. The duo fired rounds of 65 all three days. The pairing of Erik Martin (Atlanta) and Stephen Behr (Alpharetta) plus the team of Price Miller (Atlanta) and William Love (Atlanta) also tied for second place. Other top finishes with local connections included Greg Johnson (Cartersville) and Cres Dodd (Calhoun). They finished in fifth place with rounds of 65-66-66—197 (19-under-par). Andy Burris and Chase Jones — both of Cartersville — tied for seventh at 199 (17-under-par). The local duo improved each day with rounds of 70-66-63. Lee Bowman, a Cartersville Country Club member from Atlanta, paired with Matt Stauch of Marietta to tie for 11th (68-66-67) at 15-under-par while Kyle Hosick (Cartersville) and William Hamilton (Calhoun) tied for 18th (67-67-69) with a 13-under-par 203. Eighty teams started the tournament Friday and Saturday with the field cut to the low 30 teams and ties after 36 holes. The cut line, survived by 32 teams, was at 6-under-par following Saturday’s round.

Georgia Highlands College baseball split a doubleheader at Gordon State Saturday and also split this week’s four-game series with the Highlanders. The Chargers dropped the first game of Saturday’s twin bill 6-5 and won the second game 8-5. Conner Todaro had three hits for Georgia Highlands in the doubleheader including a home run, a double, and four RBIs. Caden Smith had a pair of doubles. Ben Olson homered in the opener and finished with four RBIs. Five other Chargers had one hit each including Max Kops, Zayd Brannigan, Ethan Anderson (RBI), and Austin Tienda (RBI).
