Bartow 10U finished the state tournament with four wins and a pair of losses. The locals had two wins over Dudley Little League along with wins over Oconee County and Hart County. Bartow County Little League 10U softball advanced to reach the final three teams of the 2022 Georgia Little League Softball state tournament Tuesday night with a 10-0 shutout of Dudley Little League — a team Bartow defeated 5-3 in last weekend’s opening round. The state tournament is being hosted by Warner Robins American Little League. The win sets up another re-match for Bartow against Hart County with the victor moving into the championship round against unbeaten Harris County. Hart defeated Bartow 6-5 Sunday night in the second round of the double-elimination tournament. Since then, Bartow has won two straight defeating Oconee County 12-10 Monday and Dudley 10-0 Tuesday. In Tuesday’s victory, Jayda White was again dominant in the pitching circle. She threw a complete game, no-hitter striking out nine. Dudley managed only three base runners — two on hit by pitch and one on an infield error. Meanwhile, the Bartow offense led 5-0 through just two innings, then added two runs in the fourth inning, one more in the fifth, and the final two runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 10-0 win. Bartow produced only three hits, but took advantage of seven walks, a hit by pitch, six Dudley errors, and a dozen stolen bases. Ansley Tummins had a double for Bartow. Khloe Shinall and White also added one hit apiece. Cartersville Little League 11U baseball was on the wrong end of a walk-off Tuesday night and was eliminated by Harris County 4-3 at the Georgia Little League 9-11 year old state tournament in Athens. Cartersville 11U led 3-1 through four innings but Harris County scored single runs in the fifth and sixth frames to send the game into extra innings. Cartersville, playing as the visitors, failed to score in the top of the seventh and Harris County produced three consecutive singles in the bottom of the seventh to drive home the game-winning run. Braxton Lemon suffered the pitching loss for Cartersville in relief of starter Bowen Hardy. Lemon allowed a pair of earned runs on five hits and no walks working the sixth and into the seventh inning. Hardy gave up two earned runs on seven hits and three walks through the first five frames. Hardy struck out five. Lemon fanned two. Tyler Hickman paced the Cartersville offense with three hits including two doubles and two RBIs. Will Groce contributed a double. The Bartow County Little League 10U softball team defeated Oconee County 12-10 Monday night in Warner Robins in an elimination game at the 2022 Georgia Little League softball 8-10 year old state tournament. The win leaves Bartow 10U as one of only four teams remaining in the double-elimination tournament. Bartow built a 7-0 lead in the first two innings, but Oconee rallied to grab a 10-8 lead in the top of the fourth. Bartow County tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and took the lead for good with another pair of runs in the fifth. Jayda White started in the circle and closed for Bartow County. White fanned thirteen. Ansley Tummins pitched an inning and two-thirds recording three strikeouts. Alyson Mitchell and Brooklynn Sellers had two hits each to lead the Bartow offense. White, Tummins, and Madison Brookshire added one hit apiece. BARTOW LITTLE LEAGUE 12U SOFTBALL ELIMINATED BY HARRIS COUNTY The Bartow County Little League 12U softball team finished the 2022 Georgia Little League Softball Tournament in Warner Robins with a 1-2 record and was eliminated by Harris County Monday night. Harris County scored three runs in the second inning, four in the fourth, and three more in the bottom of the fifth inning to close out the 10-0 win. Bartow 12U had no hits in the loss. Bartow had a 15-5 win Sunday over West Point, but suffered losses to Dudley and Harris County in the double-elimination tournament.

Cartersville Little League 11U baseball won an elimination game Monday night at the 2022 Georgia Little League 9-11 year old state tournament defeating Franklin County, 8-0. With the win, Cartersville 11U reaches the final four of the double-elimination tournament and advances to another elimination game Tuesday night against the Peachtree City/Harris County winner. Cartersville pitchers Noah Leffew and Braxton Lemon combined on the shutout. Leffew made the start and completed five shutout innings. He scattered five hits and three walks while striking out four. Lemon wrapped up the sixth inning on the bump allowing just one hit and no walks. He fanned two. The Cartersville offense started fast scoring four runs in the first inning and three more in the second to take a commanding lead. Lemon finished with a pair of hits including one double and one RBI. Max Stepp also had two hits for Cartersville. Cartersville product A.J. Mosby had a solid championship series for the Albany Patroons, but his team fell last week in the best-of-three finals of The Basketball League. The Patroons won last Wednesday to force a Game 3 but his former team — the Shreveport Mavericks — won the decisive game 137-132 despite a 30 point performance by Mosby. In MiLB news, former Hurricanes Sam Howard and Connor Justus have seen status changes in the past week while Yankees’ first round pick Anthony Seigler had a four stolen base game last week during a Hudson Valley Renegades win. A.J. MOSBY — Albany Patroons (5th yr. pro; The Basketball League; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS) … after dropping the first game at Shreveport 123-115 Saturday, July 2, Mosby and the Patroons needed a two-game sweep in Albany to win the 2022 championship series of The Basketball League. In a win Wednesday night, the high scoring guard posted a 20-point performance with eight rebounds, six assists, three steals, and one blocked shot during a 112-102 win. In the decisive Game 3 last Thursday, however, his 30 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists were not enough to lift Albany in a 137-132 loss to the Shreveport Mavericks. In 31 games this season with the Patroons, Mosby averaged 20.4 point, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game as Albany finished 26-7 overall including playoff series wins over Atlantic City, Huntsville, and Kokomo to reach the league finals. SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) …cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday. The southpaw has been pitching in Toledo since mid-May when he was picked up from the Pittsburgh Pirates. With the Mud Hens, he has posted a 3.75 ERA, 19:9 K:BB ratio, and a 1.42 WHIP in 12 innings over 14 appearances. He was designated for assignment July 5 and lost his spot on the Tigers’ 40-man roster. The 29-year-old will remain with the Triple-A club. Toledo (42-41 overall) is currently fifth in the International League’s West Division. The Mud Hens trail Nashville by 10 games and have a six game series this week at the St. Paul Saints. He did not see action last week as the Dirty Birds went 2-4 against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and Staten Island Ferry Hawks. In 47 games this season, the shortstop is 47-for-175 (.269 BA) at the plate with 3 homers and 28 RBIs. He has drawn 18 walks in 200 plate appearances. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (5th yr. pro; High Class-A New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS) … saw action in four games last week as the Renegades played a six game series at the Jersey Shore BlueClaws. Seigler was 2-for-12 at the plate with five walks, three runs scored, one double, and one RBI. In the July 6 game, he stole four bases including two swipes of second, a steal of third, and a steal of home during a 9-3 win. In 57 games this season with Tampa and Hudson Valley, the switch hitting catcher has a .257 batting average with seven home runs and 29 RBIs. He now also has 14 stolen bases. Maggie Ashmore of Kingston finished in a tie for 21st place Sunday at the Epson Tour’s 54-hole Twin Bridges Championship in Albany, New York. The tournament was played at the 6,080-yard, par-71 Pinehaven Country Club. Ashmore entered Sunday’s final round in a tie for fourth place after rounds of 71 and 68 to start the event. She slipped to a 76 on Sunday and closed the event a 2-over-par garnering a $2,279 paycheck — her first of the season. Playing in four events in 2022 on the Epson Tour, Ashmore moved into 143rd on the tour’s money list. She previously missed cuts at the Island Resort Championship and Carolina Golf Classic in June. She also missed the cut in April at the Garden City Charity Classic. The 26-year-old and former Augusta University golfer works on her game regularly at Cartersville Country Club. Epson Tour leader Lucy Li won the Twin Bridges Championship and the $30,000 prize with rounds of 66-68-69 (10-under-par). Swedish pro Linnea Strom, currently second on the tour’s money list, finished four shots back (6-under) and veteran Allie White placed third at 4-under-par. The next event on the Epson Tour is the FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship July 29-31 at Battle Creek Country Club in Battle Creek, Michigan. The Epson Tour is the official qualifying tour of the LPGA Tour and is the most established women’s developmental tour in the world, entering the 41st year of structured competition in 2022.

The Cartersville Little League 11U baseball team survived an elimination game Sunday afternoon with a 9-4 win over host Athens Little League at Holland Park in Athens. Cartersville, who lost to Smyrna 7-2 on Saturday in the first round of the double-elimination state tournament, advances to its next elimination game Monday night at 7 p.m. against the Warner Robins American/Franklin County loser. With the score knotted at 4-4 in Sunday’s eventual win, Cartersville 11U took the lead for good with a single run in the top of the third inning. The locals then added two more runs in the top of the fourth and two more insurance runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-4 victory. Parker Huth, who also picked up the pitching win, had three hits and one RBI to help lead the Cartersville offense. Braxton Lemon also had three hits including a double with one RBI. Will Groce produced two hits including two doubles and three RBIs. Demetrius Wynn also produced a pair of hits including one double and two RBIs. Rounding out the Cartersville attack, Max Stepp contributed a double and one RBI. Tyler Hickman had a double while Noah Leffew (RBI) and Blake Forstie added one hit apiece. Huth finished the first four innings on the mound yielding four earned runs on seven hits and four walks. Huth fanned four. Leffew and Braxton Harkness worked one scoreless inning each in relief. Smyrna then posted three runs in the fifth and added two more in the top of the sixth securing their opening round win. Brock Morris had two hits for Cartersville. R.B. Clyburn of Cartersville shot rounds of 73-70-75-72 for a 2-over-par 290 total and a tie for 20th Thursday through Sunday at the 101st Georgia State Golf Association State Amateur Championship played at the 7,094-yard, par-72 The Landings Club - Deer Creek in Savannah. William Love of Atlanta held on during the final round to win the championship by two shots over Duluth’s Billy Abdow. Love shot 69-67-68-76 to finish at 8-under par 280. Abdow carded rounds of 73-69-66-74. Logan Perkins of Locust Grove was third at 283 followed by Bruce Murphy (Johns Creek) and John Daniel Culbreth (Thomasville) at 4-under-par 284 to round out the top five. Clyburn’s four day performance included a pair of weekend eagles on par-4 holes. He also carded 13 birdies during the championship including birdies on the final two holes to climb into the top twenty. Lee Bowman, a Marietta resident and Cartersville Country Club member, also qualified for the 144-player field but missed the 36-hole cut after shooting 73-78—151 and a tie for 69th. The field was cut to the low 60 players and ties following the first two rounds.

Cartersville fell behind early and trailed 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. The locals scored twice in the fourth inning on five consecutive singles by Will Groce, Tyler Hickman, Demetrius Wynn, Braxton Lemon, and Blake Forstie. Groce had two hits total in the contest and Hickman also added a second safety with a double. Hickman started on the mound and was tagged with the pitching loss. He was touched for six runs (only three earned) on seven hits and three walks. Hickman fanned three. Wynn worked the final 2-2/3 innings on the bump without giving up a run.
