The Bartow County 8U Coach Pitch softball team won the GRPA District 5 championship Thursday night by defeating Calhoun 20-5 in the title game. Bartow 8U went undefeated in five straight games to capture the double-elimination tournament played at Westside Park in Whitfield County. Livi Caverly, Addie Reynolds, and Dawsyn Eure paced Bartow County in the championship game with three hits each. Emarie Thomason, Annaleigh Altizer, McKynlee Gunter, and Addy Johnson followed with a pair of hits each. Rylee English, Brinley Weaver, Saydie Ray, and Hallie Bell added one hit apiece in Thursday’s victory. BARTOW GREEN 8U CAPTURES DISTRICT 5 TITLE The 8U Bartow Green coach pitch baseball team rallied from behind in their final frame to capture the 2022 GRPA District 5 championship Thursday night. Bartow Green trailed until the bottom of the fifth inning but surged to a 13-5 victory. Bartow Green went 5-0 to win the 15-team, double-elimination tournament at Riverbend Park in Whitfield County. Bartow Green had tournament wins over Rockmart (24-1), Calhoun (15-10), Dalton Black (12-4), and Cartersville Purple (14-3) to reach the championship round. The Adairsville club then topped Calhoun a second time in Thursday night’s finals. Cole Baker produced a pair of hits including a double for Bartow Green in Thursday night’s win. The hurler helped the Tigers reach the College Baseball World Series for the sixth time in program history and the second time in the last four years. In MiLB action, pitcher Sam Howard picked up a couple of holds with relief performances for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens while Yankees' organization catcher Anthony Seigler started five games with solid results this week with Hudson Valley. Meanwhile on the hardwoods, former Canes' basketball product A.J. Mosby and the Albany Patroons advanced in the TBL playoffs. PRO BASEBALL Sam Howard (Toledo Mud Hens, Detroit Tigers Triple-A affiliate; 9th-year pro; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS) — Howard tossed a total of 1-2/3 innings across a pair of wins over the Iowa Cubs. Following a scoreless two-out stint in a 7-6 win last Friday, Howard gave up a solo home run but nothing else in earning a hold this past Sunday. The left-hander struck out two in an eventual 14-9 victory. Anthony Seigler (Hudson Valley Renegades, New York Yankees High Class A affiliate; 5th-year pro; Cartersville HS) — Seigler started five times (four at catcher) during a series against the Jersey Shore BlueClaws. The highlight of the week for the former first-round pick came Saturday when Seigler, batting leadoff for the Renegades, cranked a solo home run for the only tally in a 1-0 win. Despite finishing with just three hits in the series, the switch-hitter kept his OPS above 1.000 by drawing five walks. In total, Seigler scored and drove in three runs each in the series. COLLEGE BASEBALL Mason Barnett (Auburn University, Jr., Cartersville HS) — Barnett threw the opening 4 1/3 innings of Game 3 in a Super Regionals series against third-seeded Oregon State Monday in Corvallis, Oregon. The right-hander departed with a 2-1 lead and two runners on base, who were eventually stranded, in a 4-3 victory. Barnett allowed five hits and issued three walks (all to the same hitter), while striking out five of the 21 batters he faced. With the win, the Tigers advance to the College World Series in Omaha. No. 14 seed Auburn will open the eight-team tournament with a matchup against fellow SEC West member Ole Miss at 7 p.m. Saturday. PRO BASKETBALL A.J. Mosby (Albany Patroons, The Basketball League; Cartersville) — After dropping Game 1 of the Northeast Division finals at the Atlantic City Gambits, the Patroons reeled off back-to-back home wins to capture the series. Mosby posted two extremely similar lines in the victories, totaling 37 points and finishing with exactly five assists and four rebounds in each game. Mosby, who posted 17 points and seven rebounds in the series-opening loss, shot 6-of-8 from the floor for 19 points in Game 2 — a 102-86 win. He added 18 points (7-for-13 FGs) in the decisive Game 3 — a 109-83 triumph. A first-team all-East Conference selection, Mosby went 4-for-4 from the foul line in both victories. Cartersville product Mason Barnett came through with a clutch pitching start Sunday against UCLA to help lift the Auburn Tigers to an NCAA Regional title. The right hand pitcher worked 5-1/3 shutout innings to earn the victory. The victory clinched a spot in the Super Regionals this weekend. COLLEGE BASEBALL MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … started on the mound for the Tigers in their regional final Sunday night and held a 9-0 lead over UCLA through 5-1/3 innings before the game was halted at 10:42 p.m. due to weather concerns. The game resumed Monday with senior lefty Carson Skipper taking over the pitching duties. The Tigers held on to win 11-4 and advanced to this weekend’s Super Regionals. Barnett (3-2) struck out 10 of the 20 batters he faced Sunday and allowed only one hit — a leadoff double in the first inning — while keeping the Bruins off the scoreboard. He walked three but left each baserunner stranded. Auburn (40-19) will face the Oregon State/Vanderbilt winner in the Super Regionals. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … retired all four batters he faced Sunday in the fourth and fifth innings but the Mud Hens lost at the Columbus Clippers, 5-4. The 29-year-old struck out two. The southpaw also faced five batters — retiring two by strikeout — in the fifth inning of last Thursday’s 15-11 loss at Columbus. Howard surrendered three earned runs on two walks and a hit. Toledo (25-27) is currently in seventh place in the Triple-A International League’s West Division. The Mud Hens host a six game series with the Iowa Cubs Tuesday through Sunday. CONNOR JUSTUS — Charleston (WV) Dirty Birds (7th yr. pro; Independent Atlantic League; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS) … has a .303 batting average in 109 official at bats this season for the 17-23 Dirty Birds. The shortstop last appeared in a Charleston game on Saturday, May 28. The 27-year-old has two home runs and 18 RBIs this season. Defensively, he has a .954 fielding percentage in 124 total chances across 256 innings. The Dirty Birds are currently fourth in the Atlantic League’s South Division. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (5th yr. pro; High Class-A New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS) … starting at either catcher or designated hitter last week in a series at the Aberdeen IronBirds, Seigler was 5-for-16 at the plate including seven walks, a home run, four RBIs, and two runs score. After hitting for a .237 average in 25 games and 76 official at bats this season in the Florida State League, the 22-year-old switch hitter is currently hitting .351 in 11 games and 37 official at bats with the High Class A Renegades. He also has two homers, a dozen walks, and eight RBIs since his return to Hudson Valley. The Renegades (24-26) are currently third in the South Atlantic League’s North Division. PRO BASKETBALL A.J. MOSBY — Albany Patroons (5th yr. pro; The Basketball League; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS) … After winning the regular season division title with a 20-3 record, Mosby and the Patroons will open the playoffs Tuesday in Game One of the Northeast Division finals at the Atlantic City Gambits. The Patroons will host Friday night and Saturday if needed. Atlantic City swept Syracuse in a first round best-of-three series. The Patroons were 3-0 against the Gambits during the regular season. Mosby appeared in 16 games for the Patroons during the regular season averaging 19.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game.

The host Cartersville Little League Sandlot (9-year-old) tournament team split games this weekend and has reached the semi-finals of the Northwest Georgia Sectional Tournament. Cartersville lost to Smyrna Blue 7-1 in Saturday’s opening round at Rudy York Field, but bounced back in an elimination game Sunday afternoon to defeat Peachtree City, 18-2, in four innings. Cartersville will next face Smyrna Red Monday night at 6 p.m. on Joe Frank Harris Field in another elimination game. The winner will need two wins Tuesday over Smyrna Blue in the Sectional finals of the double-elimination tournament. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th-yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers affiliate; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS) … made a pair of scoreless relief appearances last Thursday and Saturday at home against Nashville. The southpaw faced four batters in the top of the ninth Thursday allowing a hit and two walks. He struck out one in a 9-4 win. Saturday, Howard retired the first two outs of the seventh inning in an eventual 5-0 loss. He again faced four batters surrendered one hit and one walk. The 29-year-old now has five appearances for Toledo totaling 3-2/3 innings with a 1.42 ERA. COLLEGE BASEBALL DAVIS WILLIAMS — Birmingham-Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … appeared in both games of the Panthers’ NCAA Division III Super Regional last Friday and Saturday in Birmingham as BSC was swept by Trinity (Texas). The reliever faced five batters and gave up one, unearned run on one hit in a 9-8 loss Friday. He was then tagged with the pitcing loss Saturday in a 14-8 defeat. He entered in the eighth inning with the game tied 8-8 and was touched for a run on two hits. He later surrendered two more runs in the ninth on a hit batsman, a walk, and three hits before being lifted. Williams (5-2) made 24 relief appearances this season with a 3.94 ERA and 7 saves. He fanned 35 in 48 innings pitched. Birmingham-Southern finished the season 41-10. PRO BASKETBALL AJ MOSBY — Albany Patroons (4th-yr. pro; The Basketball League, Cartersville HS) … was one of eight Patroons to score in double figures last Friday in a 171-106 win over the Connecticut Cobras. Mosby scored 19 points with six rebounds and six assists. Albany completed the regular season with a 20-3 record and earned a first round bye in the TBL playoffs. GOLF BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS) … Georgia made the final 15-team cut and tied for 12th at the NCAA Men’s Division I Golf Championship at the 7,289-yard, par-70 Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Bulldogs failed, however, to reach the final eight teams of match play — missing that cut by 18 shots. Brumlow shot rounds of 76 and 81 in the first 36 holes of the championship, but was scratched from the five-man starting lineup for the final 36 holes of stroke play. Brumlow played 30 competitive rounds for UGA in 2021-22 with his score counting in 22 of those rounds. His scoring average was 72.93 with 14 rounds at par or better with a low round of 66.

With the conclusion of the Georgia High School Association’s state baseball playoffs this week, the Georgia Athletic Directors’ Association has released the final standings for the 2021-22 GADA Directors’ Cup. The Directors’ Cup is awarded to the schools in each classification earning the most state playoffs points excelling and showing superior performance in 26 GHSA sports. Each school’s top eight scoring points in each gender are counted toward the award. The GADA Directors’ Cup complete scoring structure is available HERE. Cartersville, who won back-to-back Class 2A Directors' Cup titles 2000-01 and 2001-02, earned points in eight boys sports and six girls sports in 2021-22. With the Canes' boys programs actually reaching the state playoffs in nine sports, only the top eight points in that gender counted. The Purple Hurricanes received 90 points for their state runner-up finish in baseball and 85 in boys golf. Competition cheerleading followed with 80 points. Wrestling collected 66 points, boys cross country scored 54, while volleyball, football, and boys soccer added 53 points each. Girls cross country earned 38, boys track and field 34, with girls soccer, girls tennis, boys tennis, and boys basketball adding 25 points apiece. Girls track and field was credited with one point. Woodland scored Directors’ Cup points in five girls sports and four for boys. The Wildcats earned 90 points in wrestling for a state runner-up finish, 83 in fast pitch softball, 75 in girls cross country, 63 for boys cross country, and 48 for coed competition cheerleading. Woodland baseball, girls soccer, and volleyball earned 25 points each while boys track and field received 24 points. Cass had four girls sports and three boys teams to earn Directors’ Cup points. The Colonels’ wrestling team won state for 100 points while competition cheerleading earned 60 points. Football, boys soccer, girls basketball, girls tennis, and fast pitch softball each received 25 points. Adairsville earned points in five boys sports and three girls sports in 2021-22. The Tigers collected 83 points in wrestling, 69 in competition cheerleading, and 54 points in boys swimming. Girls tennis, volleyball, football, and boys basketball each earned 25 points with boys track and field adding 14 points.
