The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams collected important and hard-fought Region 7-5A wins Friday night at Woodland. The Lady Canes came from behind to beat the Lady Cats 3-2 and the Hurricanes scored a pair of goals in each half to top the Wildcats, 4-1. Three consecutive goals in the second half by Abbey Craig (penalty kick), Macy Nicklas (free kick), and Craig again off an assist from Hattie Williams overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to lift the Lady Canes. Woodland (5-6-2, 1-3) scored again late but failed to find the tying goal. The Lady Cats host Cass next Friday at 5:30 p.m. in another region tilt. Cartersville (5-7-1, 3-1) secured a state tournament berth and at least a top-three seed. The Lady Canes play Bremen at home Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and finish region play at home next Friday against Calhoun. In the boys matchup, Cartersville posted two goals by Hector Galaviz in the first half and two more in the second half by Melvin Velasquez to secure the win over Woodland. Velasquez assisted on the second Galaviz goal. Alex Rios had an assist on the first Velasquez goal of the second half. The Canes (7-6-1, 2-2) host a non-region match with Bremen Monday at 7:30 p.m. and will close out region play next Friday at home against Calhoun at 7 p.m. Woodland (5-5-3, 1-3) hosts Cass to wrap up region play next Friday night. The Friday night results for Cartersville, Woodland, and Cass will determine the final three of four state tournament slots from Region 7-5A. Blessed Trinity has secured the region’s top seed.

The Cass Colonels swept a region doubleheader with Hiram Thursday night at LakePoint to complete a three-game season sweep of the Hornets in Region 7-5A play. The Colonels won the opening game 4-0 and took the second game Thursday, 11-4, and defeating Hiram 7-1 on Tuesday. Pitchers Cayden Roberts and Aidan Larkin combined on a one-hitter in Game 1. Roberts did not allow a hit in six innings and struck out two. Larkin surrendered a leadoff single in the seventh inning, but struck out two and preserved the shutout. Cass grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The big blows in the inning included a double by Bentley Markley and a triple off the bat of Larkin. Carson Hill drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly. Larkin tripled again in the third inning and scored on a Roberts groundout. In the nightcap, the Cass offense pounded out 11 hits to score 11 runs. The Colonels led 3-1 early, but had to come-from-behind after trailing 4-3 heading to the bottom of the fifth. Cass knotted the score at 4-all in the fifth before posting a seven-run sixth inning for the win. Devan Hutchinson (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K) picked up the second game win on the mound for the Colonels in relief of starter Chase Botts (4 IP, 1ER, 0H, 4BB, 2K) and Connor Jenkins (1 IP, 3ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K). Markley finished the double header with five hits including a double and one RBI. Larkin had four hits including a double, two triples, and three RBIs. Andrew Middleton finished with three hits including a triple, a double, and three RBIs. Hill (2 RBIs), Todd Gaddy, and Wesley Collins contributed one hit apiece. Roberts and Jenkins added one RBI each. Hiram fall to 1-13 for the season and 0-3 in Region 7-5A. Cass (4-11, 3-0) starts a three-game region series with 7th-ranked Blessed Trinity Tuesday at home at 5:55 p.m.

Thursday, Cartersville tennis completed a match against Calhoun and swept a region match with Cass. The match with Calhoun was continued from suspended action on Wednesday. Georgia Highlands softball dropped both games of a home, non-conference doubleheader Thursday at Stars Field. The Chargers lost 9-0 and 11-1 to the Wallace State Lions. Wallace State completed a four-game season series sweep over the Chargers and the Lions, ranked 2nd nationally in the NJCAA DI polls, improved to 28-0 on the season. Wallace State utilized four different pitchers on the day and limited Georgia Highlands to only four hits total in the two games. The Lions’ hurlers combined for 16 strikeouts in the doubleheader. The only Georgia Highlands run of the day came on a solo home run by Allison Deweese in the second game. Madison Dennis had the Chargers only hit in the opener. Annsley Todd added a base hit in Game 2. Georgia Highlands (6-18) travels to Roane State next Tuesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader and begins conference play next weekend with doubleheaders at South Georgia State Friday and at Abraham Baldwin Saturday.

Elle Causby recorded a hat trick for Adairsville as the Lady Tigers blanked Murray County 5-0 Thursday night in Chatsworth. Causby scored two minutes into the match and added a second goal just before halftime. The sophomore added to the Lady Tigers’ advantage with a third goal in the 51st-minute. Seventeen minutes later, Causby made an assist on Megan Hardin’s goal for a 4-0 lead and Kaylee Jordan added the Tigers’ fifth goal with three minutes remaining. Hardin and Jordan along with Emma Collins and Sam Pasley contributed one assist each. Adairsville (8-2-1, 4-2) managed to control play most of the evening and keeper Annie McCormick recorded the shutout. The Lady Tigers host Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Thursday, March 24. MURRAY COUNTY 2, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 1 The Tigers dropped a 2-1 decision at Murray County Thursday night slipping to 4-9 on the season and 1-5 in Region 6-AAA. In a full slate of soccer action Tuesday night, the Cartersville girls and boys swept visiting Hiram with shutout victories in Region 7-5A play. Cartersville scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning Tuesday evening to defeat the Calhoun Yellow Jackets, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game Region 7-5A series this week. Calhoun led 2-0 early, but the Canes used two hit batsmen, a throwing error on a pickoff attempt, a wild pitch, an RBI groundout, four consecutive singles, and a passed ball — all in the fourth inning — to take the lead for good. Cartersville pitchers Ryan Johnson (5 IP, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 2K) and Phillip Schiltz (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 3K) combined to limit Calhoun to a pair of earned runs on seven hits and two walks. The Canes’ hurlers combined for five strikeouts. Johnson earned the win with Schiltz picking up a save. Hank Smith, who finished with two hits, Harrison Childers, Jacob Ray (RBI), and Blake Sutton (RBI) strung together the fourth inning hits for the Hurricanes. Hill started on the mound and struck out 12 in six innings of work. Only two Hornets reached base during his stint, one on a second inning single and the other on a hit batsman in the fourth. Hutchinson did not allow a hit or a walk but the Hornets scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of infield errors and a dropped third strike putout at first base. Aidan Larkin led the Colonels’ offense with three hits including a double and one RBI. Wesley Collins and Andrew Middleton contributed one hit and one RBI each. Max Puckett had three hits including a double, a home run, a walk and two RBIs to lead the Titans’ offense. Jake Lankie and Porter Buursema combined on the mound for Blessed Trinity limiting the Wildcats to a pair of earned runs on eight hits and one walk. The Titans’ hurlers struck out seven. Georgia Highlands hit three home runs and rattled off a dozen hits Tuesday afternoon to rout visiting Cleveland State CC 14-4 at LakePoint. After starting the 2022 season with 16 straight wins, Georgia Highlands has now reeled off eight straight wins after a brief two-game skid in late February. David Smith, Ben Olson, and Parker Poteet each hit home runs for the Chargers Tuesday and all three finished with two hits. Ethan Anderson, Caden Smith, and Austin Tienda also had two hits each for GHC. Those six hitters also combined for 10 RBIs. Zachary Murray (3 IP, 2ER, 2H, 3K) picked up the Chargers’ pitching win in relief of starter Jacob Ryan (4 IP, 2ER, 7H, 5K). Ryan Suppa (1 IP, 1K) closed out the final frame. Blustery weather forced Cartersville Little League to delay its 2022 Opening Day games until Sunday, but the first set of games are in the books and the league is off and running for its 68th season. Originally scheduled to begin this past Saturday, the opening games were pushed back one day due to an arctic blast that moved through the Cartersville area. Opening Day ceremonies were delayed until later in the day, but did take place this past Saturday. The Major League Baseball lockout came to an end last week enabling players to make their way to what will be an abbreviated spring training in 2022. Cartersville High product, Sam Howard, has joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in Bradenton, Florida and they will being Grapefruit League games this weekend. Meanwhile on the professional hardwoods, Cartersville native Ashton Hagans continues to be a major contributor for Raptors 905 of the NBA’s G League. His team is clinging to a narrow lead in the G League’s Eastern Conference with the regular season winding down. On collegiate diamonds, former Cartersville high pitcher Hannah Todd had her best performances of the year picking up a pair of wins over the past week while a pair of baseball athletes made major contributions with their respective teams. Cass product, Steven Spell, hit .545 and scored seven runs over the weekend for Young Harris College as the Mountain Lions swept Augusta and former Cartersville Hurricane, Preston Welchel, hit .444 for the week with a pair of weekend home runs for Coastal Alabama-South. On the golf links Cartersville High graduate Chanc Willis fired off increasingly strong rounds, culminating in a two-under-par 70, to help Reinhardt win the Skyhawk Invitational by nine strokes. PRO BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS — Raptors 905 NBA G League (Cartersville native; University of Kentucky; Newton HS) … After sitting out a 126-121 win last Thursday at College Park, Hagans returned to the starting lineup Saturday at Lakeland. Despite playing just 17 minutes, Hagans put together a solid line, finishing with seven points, three rebounds and three assists in a 112-109 victory. Raptors 905, an NBA Toronto Raptors affiliate, continues to lead the G League’s Eastern Conference with a 19-7 record. The team leads the Delaware Blue Coats and the Motor City Cruise by one game in the standings with just six regular season games remaining. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Pittsburgh Pirates (9th-year pro; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … with the MLB lockout coming to an end last week the Pirates have reported to an abbreviated Spring Training at their facility in Bradenton, Florida. The Pirates will play a revised 18-game Grapefruit League schedule that begins Friday at LECOM Park against the New York Yankees. The 29-year-old southpaw improved his strikeout rate to 12.0 per nine innings last season. His slider produced a .190 batting average against and a 40.8 percent strikeout rate. Howard allowed only 14.8 percent of inherited runners to score in 2021, which was fifth-best among NL relievers who had at least 25 inherited runners. Howard has appeared in 100 MLB games with 89 innings pitched. He has 111 career strikeouts at the Major League level and a 7-7 record. SOFTBALL BELLA CARNES — Georgia College (So., Woodland HS) … made a start at second base Sunday in a 6-4 loss to Young Harris College going 0-for-2 at the plate. The Bobcats (9-15, 1-5 Peach Belt Conference) play a doubleheader at Francis Marion University Tuesday and have a three-game series at Georgia Southwestern Friday and Saturday. ANSLEY EVANS — Reinhardt University (Fr., Woodland HS) … the Eagles’ starter at third base went 2-for-4 with a double, two walks, one RBI, and one stolen base in Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of visiting St. Andrews University (North Carolina). HANNAH TODD — University of Houston (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … had a 1.91 ERA and struck out eight in a pair of home pitching wins over Boise State and Northwestern State last Thursday and Friday. Todd scattered six hits and two walks Thursday while striking out three in a nine-inning, complete-game performance. The Cougars defeated the Broncos 6-2 in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off grand slam. Friday she returned to the circle with a 5-and-2/3 inning start to strike out five in a 7-2 win over the Demons. Houston won four of five over the weekend moving past the .500 mark. BASEBALL MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … worked 4-and-2/3 innings last Wednesday allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with no walks as the Tigers beat Tennessee Tech 4-3 in Huntsville. Barnett struck out five and left the game trailing 1-0 before the Tigers rallied in the seventh and eighth innings for a win. Auburn (13-4) hosts Kennesaw State Tuesday night in a final tune-up before opening the SEC schedule with a three-game home series against 6th-ranked Ole Miss Thursday through Saturday. MICAH EARWOOD — Georgia State University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … the right-hand pitcher made an eighth inning appearance Sunday allowing a double and a bunt single to the two batters he faced in a 13-10 loss to visiting Presbyterian College. The Panthers did, however, win two of three in the weekend series. Georgia State (10-6) plays at Clemson Tuesday night and will host Little Rock Friday through Sunday to begin Sun Belt Conference play. JAKE GOOCH — Central Alabama CC (So., Cartersville HS) … went 5-for-13 at the plate with one walk, one RBI, and two runs scored but the Trojans dropped all four games last week in a home-and-home series with Shelton State CC. LOGAN MARTIN — Sewanee - University of the South (Jr., Cartersville HS) … struck out 12 in a seven inning start and 6-4 loss last Friday against Marietta College in a game played in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Tigers’ right-hander allowed six earned runs on six hits and three walks. He also hit two batters. Sewanee (2-13, 0-3 Southern Athletic Association) plays 4th-ranked North Central Tuesday in Port Charlotte before hosting Hendrix College Saturday and Sunday in a three-game conference series. MASON McBEE — Coastal Alabama South CC (Fr., Cartersville HS) … worked 3-and-2/3 innings of relief after entering in the fourth inning last Thursday in a 5-4 home loss to Wallace State-Dothan CC. The right-hander did not allow a run on two hits, no walks, and he struck out three. JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … finished last week 4-for-12 at the plate as the Jaguars beat Saint Rose but were swept in a three-game series with Young Harris. Wilkie drove in two runs with sacrifice flies and reached base two other times with a walk and hit by pitch. TENNIS EMILY SURCEY — Arkansas State University (Fr., Cass HS) … Surcey cruised in her singles match, producing a 6-2, 6-1 victory on Line 2, in a 4-3 defeat to Southeast Missouri State last Wednesday at home. Surcey and Rebecca Brody fell by a 6-3 margin in Line 3 doubles action, but it didn't impact the outcome, as the Red Wolves dropped the other two matches to concede the doubles point. Arkansas State (4-7, 0-1 Sun Belt Conference) plays at Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday and at Louisiana-Monroe Sunday. Both are conference matches. TRACK AND FIELD TREVOR KNOWLES — Albion College (Grad Student, Woodland HS) … registered a pair of top-five individual finishes and helped the Britons to a runner-up showing in a relay event this past weekend at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge. The former Wildcat came in fourth in the triple jump (13.31 meters) and fifth in the long jump (6.84 meters). Albion's 4x100 relay wound up second with a time of 43.5 seconds, as Knowles ran the first leg. He also placed 24th in the 100-meter dash prelims. Georgia Highands baseball completed a three-game sweep of Macomb CC (Michigan) Monday afternoon at LakePoint defeating the Monarchs 7-3 for the Chargers seventh consecutive win. Conner Todaro had four hits for GHC including a home run, a double, and three RBIs. Conner Perry (7 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 11K) earned the pitching win with 11 strikeouts in a seven inning start. Ryan Suppa (0.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1K), Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (0.1 IP), Hunter Goodwin (0.1 IP, 1K), and Chandler Wood (1 IP, 1K) all pitched in relief for the Chargers. Zayd Brannigan (double, RBI), Mitchell Walker, and David Smith (RBI) contributed two hits each to the Georgia Highlands’ attack. Mick Moody (RBI), Ben Olson, and Austin Tienda (double, RBI) added one hit apiece. The Chargers (23-2) will host Cleveland State CC Tuesday afternoon and Brewton Parker College in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at LakePoint before embarking on a 25-game GCAA conference schedule beginning next week.
