The Adairsville Tigers advanced to the Region 6-AAA championship game with a semifinal win Friday night over Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, 69-65. The victory over the Warriors came one night after T.J. Printup’s desperation heave and four-point play lifted the Tigers to a one point quarterfinal win over Murray County. Friday, Adairsville grabbed a 24-14 lead by the end of the opening quarter and held a 42-33 advantage at the intermission. LFO outscored Adairsville 14-12 in the third quarter narrowing the margin to 54-47 but the Tigers held on down the stretch of the final eight minutes for a four-point win. T.J. Printup, Jr. led four Tigers in double figures Friday night with 16 points. Kavi Harris scored 15. Tre Winters tossed in 13 and Tre Mitchell contributed 12. Jordan Carson chipped in seven points. Hayden Poarch and Chris Roper added three apiece for Adairsville. JaMichael Davis had a game-high 31 points for Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. Brent Bowman added 16 for the Warriors who lost for only the third time all year. Adairsville (16-10) will play top-seeded LaFayette on the Ramblers’ home floor Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. for the region championship. The win also secured a home state playoff game next week for the Tigers as no worse than a No. 2-seed. LFO (21-3) will play Ringgold in the third place game Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

Adairsville’s T.J. Printup, Jr. scored 36 points including the game winning free throw to complete a four-point play in leading the Tigers over Murray County Thursday night in the Region 6-AAA quarterfinals, 55-54. Down by three points, Printup sank a last second heave for a 3-pointer and was fouled on the play. He then successfully sank the ensuing free throw to lift the Tigers to a one-point win. (video below) In action at LaFayette High School, Murray County raced out of the gate to take a 23-7 lead by the end of the first quarter, but Adairsville chipped away the rest of the way. The Tigers narrowed their deficit to 33-25 by halftime and only trailed 44-43 heading into the final period. In addition to Printup’s performance, Tre Winters scored six points for Adairsville. Kavi Harris and Tre Mitchell contributed five points each and Hayden Poarch added three. Carson Weaver led Murray County with 16 points. Tad Stone followed with 15 and Landon Bennett added 12 points for the Indians who had their season end with a 13-13 record. Adairsville (15-10) not only advanced to the Region 6-AAA semifinals Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. against No. 2-seed Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (21-2), but the Tigers also secured a berth in the Class AAA state tournament that begins next Wednesday. The other boys semifinal Friday will feature top-seeded host LaFayette (23-0) against No. 9-seeded Ringgold (10-18) at 8:30 p.m. Ringgold has region tournament wins over Sonoraville, Coahulla Creek, and Rockmart to reach the semifinals. The third place and championship games will also be at LaFayette Saturday. The third place game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. with the region championship game set for an 8:30 p.m. tip.

In an Area 10 match that saw the two teams separated by only four points through the first two of three positions last Thursday, Cartersville shot an all-time team-high 1077 but fell to Ridgeland by just eight points. The 1085 was the Panthers’ best road score of the season. Mackenzie Hunter led Ridgeland with a match-high score of 281. Caleb Adams fired the top score for Cartersville with a personal best and new school record 277. Angelina Christ followed with a 273. Kaleb Wolfe shot his personal best with a score of 264 followed by Katerina Conley (263), Noah Goodwin (249),Taylor Buchanan (244), and Sheyenne Nelson (241). The Canes Rifles (4-5) travel to Ridgeland for their next match Wednesday.

The Cartersville boys basketball team dropped a 69-25 decision to top-seeded Hiram Wednesday night in the Region 7-AAAAA semifinals at Calhoun High School. Hiram led 29-13 at the intermission and built on their advantage in the second half. Chase Tyler and Amir Taylor led the Hornets with 14 points each. Jamauri Brice scored 10 points for Cartersville. Kam Callahan added eight. Hiram advances to the region championship game Friday night against host Calhoun. The Yellow Jackets defeated Blessed Trinity 60-54 in the other semifinal Wednesday. Cartersville (11-13) will play for third place Friday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. against Blessed Trinity at Calhoun. Wednesday's loss also means the Canes will open the Class AAAAA state playoffs next Wednesday on the road.

The Cass girls have split four games this season with Blessed Trinity, but the Lady Colonels win Wednesday night in the Region 7-AAAAA semifinals at Calhoun High School was arguably the most important. Cass defeated Blessed Trinity back in December at the Adairsville Christmas Tournament, but lost the two regular season region games with the Lady Titans. Wednesday night, Cass outlasted Blessed Trinity in a low-scoring affair, 38-32. “We missed a lot of free throws,” said Cass head coach Burt Jackson following the win. “but this was our best defensive effort of the year. Maura Ryan scored 25 points against us at our place. We held her to no points tonight.” The teams were tied 9-9 after one quarter with Cass taking a 21-13 advantage to the halftime locker room. The Titans narrowed the margin to 26-25 by the end of the third quarter but Cass held on down the stretch of the final period for a six-point win. The victory sends Cass (23-4) to Friday’s region championship game at 7 p.m. against Hiram. Hiram defeated Calhoun in Wednesday’s other girls semifinal. Blessed Trinity and Calhoun will square off Friday at 4 p.m. for third place. Miya Winston led Cass with 15 points in Wednesday’s win. Claire Davis finished with nine points and 14 rebounds. Justice Bennett contributed eight points and five boards while Haley Johnson added six points and 10 rebounds. Christa Lair led Blessed Trinity (13-13) with eight points. Riley Fleck added seven. The Cass win also secures a first round home game when the Class AAAAA State Tournament begins next Tuesday. As region finalists, the Lady Colonels will be either a No. 1-seed or a No. 2-seed.

The Cass boys soccer team cruised to a 10-2 win Wednesday night over Pepperell and the Lady Colonels played the visiting Lady Dragons to a 3-3 draw at Cochran Stadium. Eight different players scored goals for the Cass boys and six had one or more assists. Christian Villella and Camden Hillhouse had two goals and one assist each. Alex Hernandez finished with a goal and four assists. Jovany Contreras and Juan Pajarito had one goal and one assist each. Andrew Nguyen, Kayden Pineda, and Jose Rodriguez scored goals and Grayson Dysart added one assist for the Colonels. The loss dropped Pepperell to 2-3 on the season and the Colonels improved to 4-2. In the girls game, Cass freshman Haley Sklba scored all three goals for the Lady Colonels in their 3-3 draw. The Cass girls are now 1-3-1 on the season and Pepperell moves to 1-2-2. The Lady Colonels and Colonels host South Paulding Friday night in a doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m.

The Cass soccer teams split a pair of contests Tuesday night at Mount Paran Christian with the boys winning 3-0 and the girls falling 10-0. Camden Hillhouse scored the Colonels' first goal unassisted in the first half for a 1-0 lead at the intermission. In the second half, Alex Hernandez and Christian Viella added goals for Cass. The Cass boys improved to 3-2 on the season while the Lady Colonels slipped to 1-3. The two teams host Pepperell Wednesday in a doubleheader that kicks off at 5:30 p.m.

The Excel Christian Academy boys took a three-point lead early in the fourth quarter Tuesday night but failed to convert on several key possessions and missed some critical free throws late in the game falling at The Walker School in Marietta 53-50 in the opening round of the Region 7-A-Private tournament. The host Wolverines led 11-8 after one quarter and held a 29-23 lead at halftime. Excel narrowed the margin to 40-39 by the end of the third quarter and briefly grabbed a 43-40 lead at the 5:40 mark. From that point, Walker outscored the Eagles 13-7 to escape with a three-point win. Ricky McKenzie led Walker and all scorers in the game with 25 points. Jackson Evans added 12 points for the Wolverines. Elijah Payne led Excel with 19 points. Jacob Taylor followed with 15. Comari Nettles contributed 11 and Jakaden Barkley added five points for the Eagles. Walker (18-7) earned a state tournament bid and advanced to the region semifinals at Christian Heritage Thursday night against the host and top-seeded Lions. Excel Christian had its season come to an end with an 11-14 record.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes and the Cass Lady Colonels both won Region 7-AAAAA opening round tournament games Monday night in Calhoun securing berths in the 2022 Class 5A state playoffs that will begin next week. There’s still region business ahead for the two teams, however, as they will play Wednesday in the region tournament semifinals and again Friday in either third place consolation games or region title games. In other action Monday, both Woodland teams lost their opening round contests in the same tournament at Calhoun High School and the Adairsville girls were knocked out of the Region 6-AAA tournament in LaFayette by Coahulla Creek. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 56, CASS 52 The Cartersville boys secured a berth in the Class AAAAA state tournament Monday night by outlasting Cass in the opening round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament in Calhoun, 56-52. After trailing 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, Cartersville grabbed and 26-25 lead by halftime and extended their advantage to 43-39 by the end of the third quarter. With lead exchanges again in the final period, the Canes held off the Colonels down the stretch for a four-point victory. Kam Callahan scored a game-high 20 points to lead Cartersville. Romo Pace finished with ninen points. Jaeden Scott and Luke Gambill tossed in eight each. Monty Tolbert contributed seven and Jamauri Brice added four points for the Hurricanes. Jelani Hames led Cass with 13 points. Sacovie White and Ethan McIntyre followed with 10 apiece. Kaden Baldwin chipped in seven points. Jayden Foster finished with five. Devin Henderson added four points and Jackson Hale three for the Colonels. The Cass boys have their season end with a 9-16 record. Cartersville (11-12) advances to the region semifinals Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. to play top-seeded Hiram at Calhoun High School. CASS GIRLS 57, CARTERSVILLE 33 The Cass girls punched their ticket for the state playoffs Monday night by defeating rival Cartersville in the opening round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament, 57-33. Cass led 17-8 after one quarter and never trailed. The Lady Colonels took a 35-12 lead at halftime and were up 47-19 through three quarters. A double-double by Claire Davis with 13 points and 12 rebounds paced the Lady Colonels. Freshman Miya Winston also reached double figures with 10 points for Cass. Mikaela Jackson and Zion Hayes followed with six points each. Amaya Ford, Haley Johnson, and Kiana McDaniel each scored five. Justice Bennett and Keara McDaniel added four and three, respectively. Jakayah Draughn led Cartersville with 12 points. Zoe Casey scored six. Taff Bradley finished with five points. Ansley Griffin scored four. Aujyhnae Davenport chipped in with three points and Milena Bihm added two for the Lady Canes. The Cartersville girls’ season comes to a close with a 4-14 record. Cass (22-4) advances to the region semifinals Wednesday night at 7 p.m. where they will play Blessed Trinity at Calhoun High School. HIRAM 63, WOODLAND GIRLS 29 The Hiram girls led 31-14 at halftime and cruised to a 63-29 win over Woodland Monday evening at Calhoun High School in the first round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament. Kalisha Phillips scored 20 points and Taylor Crawford added 14 for the Lady Hornets (14-9) who advance to play Calhoun in the region semifinals Wednesday at 4 p.m. Abigail Taylor led Woodland with 11 points. Morgan Echols scored eight. Kasidee Wall contributed seven points and Reagan Weightman added three for the Lady Cats. “I am proud of everything our two seniors (Abigail Taylor and Dylynn Motes) did both on the court and from leadership perspective this season with so many younger teammates,” said Woodland head coach Kyle Morgan. “I’m hoping our younger kids choose to invest in their games and have bright futures with continued hard work.” The season ends for the Woodland girls with a 2-23 mark. COAHULLA CREEK 63, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 57 The Adairsville girls led Monday night heading into the fourth quarter, but a 22-15 advantage by the Lady Colts in the fourth quarter lifted Coahulla Creek to a 63-57 Region 6-AAA tournament win at LaFayette High School. The Lady Tigers were ahead 36-27 at the intermission but Coahulla Creek narrowed the lead to just one point at 42-41 by the end of the third quarter. Brinkley Reed scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Lady Colts. Marlee Fossett added eight. Alissa Winters led Adairsville with 20 points. Ya’Torrean Hale followed with 14. Autumn Henderson scored 10. Haley Stiles and Lexie Childers contributed four each. Naxirya Roberts finished with three and Darby Adams added two points for the Lady Tigers. Coahulla Creek (11-15) advances to play Sonoraville Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. back at LaFayette. Adairsville has its season end with a 12-14 record. BLESSED TRINITY 89, WOODLAND BOYS 52 Blessed Trinity used a balanced scoring attack placing five players in double figures Monday night at Calhoun High School to defeat Woodland 89-52 in the opening round of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament. Woodland led 11-9 after the opening eight minutes, but the third-seeded Titans outscored the Wildcats 27-9 in the second quarter to take a 36-20 lead at the intermission. Blessed Trinity (14-12) extended the lead to 60-34 by the end of the third quarter. Brigham Rogers led Blessed Trinity with 19 points. Jackson Lewis followed with 13. Jack Whalen and Ty Harpring finished with 12 points each and Cole Weaver added 10 for the Titans. KJ Rogers scored 21 points for the Wildcats. Harlin Morris finished with 10. Brelace Williams contributed six points. Jonah Plott scored four. David Jinks and Kyler Williams added three points apiece for Woodland. Blessed Trinity advances to play Calhoun Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the region semifinals. The Wildcats have their season end with a 5-19 mark.

Woodland opened the 2022 baseball season Monday night by pounding out 16 hits in an 18-12 win over visiting Carrollton. Woodland led 9-0 after two innings and scored in every offensive frame. Carrollton narrowed the margin to 13-11 in the top of the fifth inning, but the Wildcats secured the win with a four-run sixth inning. Chase Carson led the Woodland offense with four hits including a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Jacob Gravett (3 RBIs) and Julian Wright (2 RBIs) had three hits each. Rowan Billings finished with two hits including a double, a sacrifice fly, and two RBIs. Both teams scored twice in the first inning with Kell adding single runs in the second, third, and sixth innings for a 5-2 lead. Cass answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth before the Longhorns sealed the game with their seventh inning rally. Caden Marcos, Tyler Bradford, and Nicholas Dawkins combined for six of Kell’s nine hits and five RBIs. Carson Hill led the Colonels’ offense with two hits including a home run, a double, and three RBIs in a 2-for-3 performance. Aidan Larkin had one double in there at bats. Bentley Markley and Jesiel Moctezuma had the other Cass base hits. Hayden Cole (3 IP, 4R, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 3K) started on the mound and suffered the pitching loss for Cass. NBA G-LEAGUE ASHTON HAGANS — Raptors 905 (Cartersville native; University of Kentucky; Newton HS) … started at point guard and produced a double-double Saturday in a 109-104 win Saturday at the Delaware Blue Coats. Hagans finished with 17 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds, and three assists won for the fourth time in the last five games. TENNIS EMILY SURCEY — Arkansas State University (Fr., Cass HS) … won her Line 3 singles match 6-0, 7-6 and paired with teammate Rebecca Brody in a 6-4 Line 3 doubles loss as the Red Wolves lost 5-2 Friday at Central Arkansas. Saturday against Kansas City University, the Surcey/Brody doubles team won 7-5 at Line 3 and Surcey fell 4-6, 6-2, 5-7 at Line 3 singles in a Red Wolves’ 4-1 win. SOFTBALL COLBI BALLARD — Shorter University (So., Cartersville HS) … pinch hit and played left field going 0-for-1 at the plate with a walk and a run scored in two plate appearances during last Saturday’s 17-6 loss to Carson-Newman at the Charger Chill-Out in Albertville, Alabama. BRIANA HILL — Covenant College (So., Woodland HS) … went 0-for-1 but scored a run in a 6-3 win Saturday as the Scots defeated University of the South 6-3 at the Mississippi University for Women Invitational. Covenant dropped its opener Friday at the tournament but won the final three games. Now 3-1, the Scots host a doubleheaders with George Fox University (Oregon) Wednesday and Thursday. SADYE JOHNSON — University of North Georgia (Fr., Adairsville HS) … came off the bench in four games over the weekend and went 2-for-6 with one RBI and one run scored as the 4th-ranked Nighthawks went 6-0 hosting the Surf ’N Turf Classic in Dahlonega. UNG had a pair of wins each over 22nd-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce, Davis & Elkins, and Florida Southern. Now 8-2 on the year, North Georgia travels to Greenwood, South Carolina for the Bearcat Invitational Saturday and Sunday. They will face both USC-Beaufort and Chowan University in a pair of games each. HANNAH TODD — University of Houston (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … started in the circle tossing 3-and-1/3 innings with no decision in a Cougars’ 9-5 win Saturday over Texas-San Antonio. Todd allowed four earned runs on four hits, three walks, and a hit batsman facing 18 batters. Houston (4-1) also had wins during the Houston Invitational over Dayton and Texas Tech. The Cougars host Oklahoma, McNeese State, and Texas State this weekend in the Houston Classic. BASEBALL JAKE GOOCH — Central Alabama CC (So., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-8 with two RBIs last week as the Trojans went 1-3 in a pair of home-and-home doubleheaders with Andrew College. KENNY JINKS — Shorter University (Jr., Woodland HS) … closed out the sixth inning and retired one batter in the seventh last Friday afternoon in a 14-0 home win over Albany State. Jinks struck out two of the four batters he faced allowing one hit. He also hit a batter. LOGAN MARTIN — University of the South (Jr., Cartersville HS) … the right-handed starter tossed seven innings Saturday without yielding an earned run, but received no decision in the Tigers’ 2-1 home win over Anderson University (Indiana). Martin scattered just two hits and issued no walks while striking out 13. He did hit two batters. His team led 1-0 when he left the game after seven innings, but had to regain the lead in the ninth inning for the victory. University of the South (2-1) hosts Millikin University (Illinois) in a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. GARRETT MISHOE — University of West Georgia (So., Adairsville HS) … worked a scoreless eighth inning last Tuesday afternoon in the Wolves’ 11-1 win at Emmanuel College. Mishoe walked one and struck out one. West Georgia (5-1) also split a pair of games in South Florida this past weekend winning at Lynn University and dropping a game at Palm Beach Atlantic. The Wolves host Augusta University Tuesday and play a three-game Gulf South Conference series at West Florida Saturday and Sunday. SCOTTY SMITH — Covenant College (Fr., Woodland HS) … faced six batters yielding three hits and a walk in the Scots’ 13-4 win Saturday at Emory University. Smith recorded one strikeout. The victory was Covenant’s lone win in the three-game series. The Scots (1-2) play a three game series Friday and Saturday at Oglethorpe University in Brookhaven.
