Georgia Highlands swept a baseball doubleheader at Bryan College JV Monday to extend the Chargers’ win streak to eight games and improve the team’s 2020 record to 21-4. Georgia Highlands won 9-1 and 14-0 in Monday’s sweep. Four Chargers’ pitchers combined on a three-hitter in the 9-1 win and had seven total strikeouts. Ethan Underwood, Hunter Moody, Stevie Szucs, and Dalton Bradford each worked from the bump in the opener. Joe Sutton had three hits including a home run and three RBI. David Smith and Omar Daniels both had two-hit games. The Chargers also stole ten bases in the win with Gavin Harmon and Max Kops swiping three each. In the second win, Johnny Dow and Jacob Ryan combined to shutout Bryan JV with a one-hitter. They also combined for nine strikeouts. All nine starters in the batting order for GHC had at least one hit. Trace Twardoski and David Smith homered. Sutton had two hits including a double and two RBI to give his a five-hit, five-RBI day. The Chargers play at Emmanuel College JV Tuesday and will host a doubleheader with Edison CC Saturday at LakePoint.

Both Cass and Adairsville competed Saturday at the Southeast Whitfield Track and Field Invitational. The Cass boys placed third behind Calhoun and Pickens. Adairsville placed eleventh. The Cass girls team placed ninth. Nigel Whittington (15.72) and Shane Cooper (17.75) finished first and second in the 110 meter hurdles for the Cass boys. Whittington was also first in the 300 meter hurdles (41.88). Ian Herman finished second in the discus throw (115-09.5) and the Cass 4x100 meter relay team placed third (46.02). Tre Mitchell of Adairsville had a fifth place finish in the 200 meter run (24.28). Complete event results are available HERE.

The Woodland girls tennis team narrowly lost to Kell 2-3 Monday night in Region 7-AAAAA action. Singles Line 1 — Becky Wesley lost 1-6, 0-6 Line 2 — Kayla Gales won 6-4, 6-1 Line 3 — Abby Cates lost 4-6, 2-6 Doubles Line 1 — Eryn Gentry / Emma Savage lost 1-6, 3-6 Line 2 — Abby Spaulding / Monterya Morrow won 6-0, 6-1 The Woodland boys square off with Kell Tuesday.

After being shutout twice Saturday in a region doubleheader with Villa Rica, pitcher Blaine Ingram and the Cass Colonels bounced back Monday night as the senior hurler tossed a no hitter at home to beat Hiram, 9-0. Ingram struck out 12 in his seven innings on the bump. He walked two. Meanwhile the Colonels’ offense took a 3-0 lead through the first three innings, added a four-run fifth inning, and two more insurance runs in the sixth. Cass banged out 11 hits with the top three batters in the Colonels’ order striking for eight of those hits and six RBI. Jordan Gani had three hits including a double and a triple. Thomas Botts had three hits with a double and three RBI. Ingram doubled, tripled, and drove home three runs in his own cause. Mark Perdue contributed a pair of hits including a double and two RBI and Trey Scott had the other Cass base hit. The loss drops the Hornets to 6-5 on the season and 0-3 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (6-4, 1-2) plays Game 2 of the series at Hiram Wednesday at 5:55 p.m. ROME 2, WOODLAND 1 The Wildcats led 1-0 after three innings, but a two-run fourth was enough to lift the Rome Wolves past visiting Woodland Monday night in Region 7-AAAAA action. Scotty Smith (6 IP, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 11K) was outstanding on the mound for Woodland, but Rome’s Caleb Ellard (6 IP, 1ER, 4H, 4BB, 7K) picked up the pitching win for the Wolves with Jonathan Vigoa (1 IP, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 2K) earning a save. Woodland’s Phoenix Cramer — who had three hits in the game including a double — singled to start the Wildcats’ third inning. He later scored on a double steal of second by Peyton Posey and his own steal of home. Rome answered in the fourth inning on a double, a walk, a double steal, and a two-RBI single by Hayden Filletti. Brayer Cowan had a two hit game for Rome’s offense and Jack Orr added a double. In addition to Cramer’s performance at the plate for Woodland, Peyton Posey and Carter Heath had base hits. Rome improved to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (6-6, 1-2) will host a rematch with Rome Wednesday at 5:55 p.m.

Georgia Highlands softball completed a five-game sweep of games played Friday through Sunday in Clermont, Florida at The Spring Games. Playing twice on Sunday, the Chargers beat Alpena CC (Mich.) 8-1 and blanked Cuyahoga CC (Ohio) 3-0. Earlier in the weekend, Georgia Highlands had wins over Delta CC (Mich.), Muskegon CC (Mich.), and Mercyhurst North East CC (Pa.) In the opener Sunday, Madalyn Morton tossed a complete-game four-hitter in a 9-1 Chargers’ win. She struck out 13. In the second game, Montana Ledbetter tossed a two-hit shutout and fanned six. Haley Robinson had four hits including a pair of doubles in the win over Alpena. Taryn Hitchcock contributed three hits including a double and a triple. Alexis Davis had a double and two RBI. Lacey Rutledge doubled with one RBI. Natalia Herrera and Kyndal Brown both finished with one hit and one RBI each while Mallory Alford added a double and one RBI. In the win over Cuyahoga, Allison Daffron finished with two hits including a home run and two RBI. Ansley Todd had a two-hit game and Hailey Cronic added a double. The Chargers (12-10) have now won seven straight as they prepare to host Motlow State CC and Louisburg CC Tuesday at Stars Field in Cassville. GHC will also entertain Wallace State - Hanceville in a doubleheader Thursday before traveling to East Georgia State Saturday to begin GCAA conference play.

The Georgia Highlands softball team won its third straight game at the Clermont, Florida Spring Games Saturday by powering past Mercyhurst North East Community College (Pa.), 16-2. The Chargers scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, but pulled away in the third with an eight-run frame before plating six more runs in the fourth inning. Georgia Highlands pounded out 18 hits including five home runs in their five offensive frames. Montana Ledbetter (5 IP, 2ER, 4H, 0BB, 5K) earned the pitching victory for the Chargers with a complete game. Deyonce Lewis, Izzy Marcotte, Taryn Hitchcock, and Mallory Alford combined for 13 hits and 11 RBIs to power the Georgia Highlands’ offense. Marcotte hit a pair of home runs. Lewis, Haley Robinson, and Madeline Hairston also homered for the Chargers. GHC (10-10) has now won five in a row. The Chargers wrap up their Florida trip Sunday with games against Alpena CC (Mich.) and Cuyahoga CC (Ohio).

A four-run sixth inning vaulted Woodland to a 7-4 non-region road win Saturday at Kennesaw Mountain. The Wildcats led 3-1 through four innings, but the host Mustangs knotted the score 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Woodland’s four-run response was enough for a 7-3 lead and the Wildcats held on for a three-run win in Cobb County. The Wildcats’ sixth inning started harmlessly enough. Zach Wilson singled with one out and was still at first with two outs in the inning. Back-to-back hit batsmen, however, loaded the bases for Dallas Adams. He coaxed a walk to force in one run before Carter Heath smacked a two-run double into centerfield. Following a Mustangs’ pitching change, Adams scored on a wild pitch to give Woodland a 7-3 lead they would not relinquish. Coming off a tough, extra innings loss Friday night at home to Paulding County, the Wildcats got a strong start from pitcher Trevor Collum (2.2 IP, 1ER, 3H, 2BB, 2K). Fisher Davis (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K), Zach Wilson (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 1BB), and Jackson Rutledge (1 IP, 1ER, 2H) pitched in middle relief. Jacob Gravett (1 IP, 0R, 0H) closed out the seventh inning. Wilson was credited with the pitching win. Gravett picked up a save. Peyton Posey had three hits for Woodland including a double. Carter Heath contributed two hits including a double and three RBI. Scotty Smith also had a two-hit game. Chase Carson (RBI), Wilson, and J.T. Hampton had the other Wildcats’ hits. Dallas Adams tossed in a pair of RBI. Woodland (6-5, 1-1) travels to Rome Monday at 5:55 p.m. as the Wildcats return to Region 7-AAAAA action. CASS SHUTOUT TWICE IN REGION DOUBLEHEADER The Cass baseball team was shutout in both games of a doubleheader with Villa Rica Saturday, 4-0 and 7-0, as both teams opened play in Region 7-AAAAA. Johnny Bravy (7 IP, 0R, 2H, 4BB, 14K) tossed a two-hitter and struck out 14 in the opener. Jacob Turner went the distance scattering five hits and fanned five in the second game. Jayden Smith (5 IP, 3ER, 6H, 3BB, 2K) suffered the first game loss on the mound for the Colonels. Trey Scott (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB) tossed an inning in relief. In Game 2, Jordan Gani (4 IP, 7R, 4ER, 7H, 3BB, 4K) was the losing pitcher for Cass. Carson Hill (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 2K) and Scott (1 IP, 0R, 1BB, 2K) both worked in relief. In the opening game, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Villa Rica then added two runs in the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth as they out-hit Cass seven to two. Logan Nelson and Blaine Ingram had the only Cass hits. In Game 2, the Wildcats scored four times in the first inning and added three insurance runs in the fourth. Cass managed only four hits. One each by Ingram, Matt Ballas, Karson Kelley, and Kyle Miller. Villa Rica improved to 3-4 on the season and 2-0 in region action. Cass (5-4, 0-2) hosts Hiram Monday at 5:55 p.m. and will travel to the Hornets home field Wednesday for a 5:55 p.m. first pitch.

The Cartersville Lady Canes' soccer team defeated Sprayberry 2-0 Saturday night in a game featured at the Central-Carroll High School Showcase in Carrollton. Kalyn Donegan scored both goals for Cartersville in the win. Her first was in the 35th minute off a nice lay-off from Abby Craig. The second Donegan goal came in the 75th minute off an assist from Linet Chege. Coach Chad Murray credited "another superb showing from the back line" and a clean sheet for goalkeeper Trista Kelly. The Lady Canes open Region 5-AAAA play Tuesday at Troup County.

The Bartow County Recreation Department 10U Boys basketball team once again reached the finals of the GRPA State Tournament, but once again came up just short in their quest to bring home a state title. In Friday night’s preliminary action, Bartow started fast with a convincing 50-32 win over Spalding County. Jabari Burleson led Bartow with a dominating performance. He scored 28 points, including 8 for 11 from the free throw line. Jorian Bailey finished with 13 points, Jeremy Dent posted five, and Tavaris Burleson and Lance Tippett each scored two points. In Saturday’s quarterfinals, Bartow handily defeated South Fulton 47-21. Using a more balanced attack than in the Spalding County game, Bartow grabbed a large lead early and never looked back. Jabari Burleson led Bartow with 10 points, Jeremy Dent scored eight, Tavaris Burleson, Lance Tippett, and Jaylon Watkins added six each, Christian McClendon five, Jorian Bailey four, and Kaiden Kent scored two points. In the semifinals, Bartow faced a familiar foe in Smyrna. Smyrna wanted to avenge their loss to Bartow in the District 5 finals and for three quarters it looked like that might happen. Bartow went on a tear in the fourth quarter and flipped a two-point deficit to as much as a nine-point lead before finishing with a 47-40 victory. Jeremy Dent scored 17 to lead Bartow, Jabari Burleson totaled 13, Tavaris Burleson six, Jorian Bailey five, Kaiden Kent four, and Christian McClendon added two points. Bartow faced Savannah in the finals and never could get on the right track in the game. Despite falling behind early, Bartow managed to stay within reach and cut the lead to one at halftime. Savannah managed to keep Bartow at bay in the second half, however, and won the contest 40-35. Jeremy Dent scored 15 to lead Bartow, Jabari Burleson had seven, Tavaris Burleson five, Jorain Bailey three, Lance Tippett and Jaylon Watkins two each, and Christian McClendon scored one. BARTOW 10U GIRLS ELIMINATED IN STATE SEMIFINALS The BCRD 10U Girls defeated Rome Saturday in the state quarterfinals 26-16 to set up a state semifinal game with tournament host Whitfield County. Bartow led Rome 7-4 after one quarter, but trailed 12-9 at halftime before battling back for a second half win. Bartow took a 15-14 advantage by the end of the third quarter and pulled away for a 26-16 victory. Jabryanna Harris led the way for Bartow 10U with 12 points. Zakiaya Banks and Rakhia Pace added eight and six points, respectively. In the state semifinals, Bartow was eliminated by host and eventual state runner up Whitfield County, 57-13. The Cartersville baseball team concluded play at the 2020 Perfect Game High School Showdown in Hoover, Alabama Saturday with an extra innings 8-7 loss to the Georgia Class 6A third-ranked Winder-Barrow Bulldoggs. The two teams battled to a 6-6 tie through regulation and both teams plated a run in the ninth inning before Winder-Barrow took the lead in the top of the 12th inning and made it stand up. It looked good early on for Cartersville. The Canes grabbed a 5-0 lead in the second inning on three hits, two hit batsmen, a walk, and a Bulldoggs’ outfielder error. Winder-Barrow scored twice in the top of the fourth on a pair of singles, two walks, and a Cartersville error, but the Hurricanes pushed their lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the frame. Curt Bonner lined a single into left field to score Parker McPherson in the Canes’ half of the fourth inning. The Bulldoggs’ biggest inning was the sixth when they scored four times to tie the game at 6-6. Three consecutive hits followed by a Brady House triple narrowed the Cartersville lead to 6-5 and a two-out single by Jhaydon Sullivan tied the game and ultimately sent it to extra innings. Cartersville had a pair of baserunners in the seventh and eighth innings but could not convert them into a run, but after Winder-Barrow took a 7-6 lead in the top of the ninth the Canes got an RBI groundout by Josh Davis to score Tyler Williamson who had doubled earlier. The Hurricanes loaded the bases in both the tenth and eleventh innings without pushing a run across and a flyout that led to a double play ended a Cartersville threat in the bottom of the twelfth. Drake Carver (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 4BB) suffered the pitching loss for Cartersville after working the final three frames on the bump. Colt McKibben (3.2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 5H, 3BB, 1K) started for the Hurricanes. Davis Williams (2.1 IP, 4ER, 6H, 1BB) and Phillip Schiltz (3 IP, 1ER, 3H, 3K) also pitched for Cartersville. Trevor Maddox (3.1 IP, 1ER, 4H, 4BB, 3K) picked up the pitching win for Winder-Barrow in relief of starter Andrew Lewis (3 IP, 5R, 4ER, 4H, 2BB, 2K) and middle reliever Sullivan (5 IP, 1R, 0ER, 6H, 2BB, 5K). Sullivan had a four-hit game for the Bulldoggs including a double, triple, and one RBI. Four other Winder-Barrow starters had two hits each. McPherson and Bonner (RBI) had three hits each for Cartersville. One of McPherson’s hits was a double. Williamson contributed two hits including a double. Davis (2 RBI), Eastin Elliott (2 RBI), Ben Williams, Sam Melton (double), Clay Ross, and Jake Brasfield finished with one hit each. After winning the first two games at the Showdown, Cartersville wrapped up the Perfect Game event with a 2-2 mark. The Canes (7-5) are scheduled to play Woodberry Forest (Virginia) Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at LakePoint before traveling to Alexander Thursday in their final two tune-ups before starting Region 5-AAAA play March 16.

The Cass girls and boys soccer teams defeated Woodland Friday night in Region 7-AAAAA action. The Colonels escaped with a 1-0 win in overtime on a goal by Braxton Benham. Alex Cabanas was credited with the assist. The Lady Colonels led 2-1 at halftime on their way to a 5-1 win over the Lady Cats. Leidi Toribio led the way with four goals and added one assist. Morgan Tompkins scored the other Cass goal and Maddie Shook contributed four assists. Tiera Feanny scored the lone Woodland goal.
