The Cass girls and boys basketball teams completed a weekend sweep with wins Saturday at East Paulding. Those victories followed wins Friday night at Paulding County. CASS GIRLS 70, EAST PAULDING 49 The Lady Colonels didn’t pull away until the third quarter, but finished strong in a 21-point win Saturday at East Paulding. Cass led 16-14 after one quarter and was ahead by ten at the intermission, 37-27. The Lady Colonels then surged to take a 24-point lead by the end of the third quarter, up 61-37. The loss drops East Paulding to 4-15 overall and 3-8 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (14-6, 5-6) hosts Class AAAAA 7th-ranked Rome Tuesday night at 6 p.m. before traveling to Carrollton Friday night. CASS BOYS 70, EAST PAULDING 61 The Cass boys held on Saturday for a road, region win at East Paulding 70-61 in a game that was closely contested throughout. Cass led 13-8 after one period, 25-22 at halftime, and 41-38 through three quarters before holding on for a nine-point victory. “I’m proud of our guys for their toughness and energy today,” said Colonels head coach Sean Glaze. “With only 16 hours between games that’s not always easy to do.” Zaylan Chaney led Cass with 18 points. Jordan Ford and Braxton Benham followed with 17 and 15, respectively. Andrew Glaze contributed six points. C.J. Pipkin tossed in five. Alfred Washington scored four and Jaquan Heard three for the Colonels. Sebastian Tidor posted 17 points for the host Raiders (7-13, 3-9). Sean Rutledge followed with 12. The visiting Lady Patriots led 11-9 after one quarter, 27-17 at halftime, and 33-24 through three quarters. Sandy Creek (7-7, 2-1) was led by Daija Powell and Jamia Hodges with 16 points each. NORTH MURRAY 52, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 38 North Murray utilized a balanced scoring attack to win Friday night at Adairsville, 52-38. The visiting Mountaineers got 10 points each from Tensley Coladson and Aubri Blankenship while Baylay Gable and Korbin Tipton added nine each. Adairsville was within six at halftime — trailing 25-19 — but North Murray doubled their advantage in the third quarter to lead 41-29. Lexie Childers scored 13 points and Alexa Varner added 10 to help lead the Lady Tigers. North Murray improved to 8-9 on the season and 6-2 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (5-13, 2-8) hosts Pickens Saturday night at 6 p.m. ROME 43, WOODLAND GIRLS 25 Class 5A 7th-ranked Rome built a 32-12 lead by halftime on their way to a 43-25 victory Friday night at Woodland. Trenisha Adams and Justyce Moore led the Lady Wolves with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Carli Clymer and Morgan Cooper paced Woodland with eight points apiece. All five local high school boys teams were in action Friday night with both Cass and Excel Christian snapping losing skids with their region victories. Elsewhere Cartersville lost at home to Class AAAA 2nd-ranked Sandy Creek, Woodland fell to visiting Rome, and Adairsville lost at home to North Murray. CASS BOYS 67, PAULDING COUNTY 62 The Colonels built a nice lead at Paulding County Friday night, but had to hold off the host Patriots down the stretch for a 67-62 Region 7-AAAAA win. The victory by Cass snapped a three-game losing streak. Cass led 31-23 at the intermission and extended their lead to 53-39 after three quarters before holding on for a five-point win. Excel trailed 29-22 at the intermission, but pushed past the Trojans in the third quarter by outscoring Gordon Lee 19-2 in the period. The Eagles then held off the visitors in the final period for a five-point win. Rayshawn Womack paced ECA with 23 points. Rashard Doyal scored 14. Kalil Holley had 11 points. NORTH MURRAY 49, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 47 The Adairsville Tigers made a furious comeback in the third quarter Friday night to get back into their game with visiting North Murray, but the region-leading Mountaineers held on for a 49-47 win. North Murray led 12-6 after one quarter and 24-15 at halftime, but Adairsville narrowed the margin to 37-34 by the end of the third quarter before falling by two points. The Cass High School wrestling team defeated both Murray County and East Paulding Wednesday in a home match tune-up prior to this weekend’s Region 7-AAAAA Duals Championship. The event also served as a celebration of the Cass senior team members. The Colonels beat Murray County 57-6 and topped East Paulding 59-7. In the victory over Murray County, Tyler McKnight (126 pounds), Zach McKnight (152), Cameran Hill (160), and William Buttram (195) pinned their opponents. Alex Depasquale (170) won by major decision and Sean Whatley (285) won by minor decision. The remainder of the Colonels’ points came by forfeit. Against East Paulding, Eli Doolittle (113), Tyler McKnight (126), Adam Urizar (145), Zach McKnight (152), Cameran Hill (160), Alex Depasquale (182), and Sean Whatley (220) won by pin. Bryce Kresho (120) won by disqualification from penalty points and Reed Davis (195) won by technical fall for Cass. The Region 7-AAAAA Duals Championship is this Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at Paulding County High School.

The Adairsville High School wrestling team enjoyed its Senior Night activities Tuesday and rolled through three straight matches with victories. The Tigers beat Pace Academy 65-13, downed Armuchee 65-15, and wrapped up the evening with a 60-18 win over Mt. Zion-Carroll. Adairsville head coach Ryan Torrence, in comments Wednesday morning, said he was very thankful to all who came out and supported the eleven senior Tiger wrestlers and the 2020 squad Tuesday night. Recognized during the annual senior walk Tuesday were Angel Banda, Chelsea Davis, Evan Henry, Owen Henry, Ethan James, J.T. Jolly, Brendan Luginbuhl, Stephen Lynch, Tommy Silvers, Ashleigh Stancil, and James Standridge. The Tigers will compete in their Area Duals Championship Tournament this weekend at Sonoraville High School.

While none of the five local high school boys basketball teams came away with victories Tuesday night, three suffered losses to teams ranked in the Top Ten of their respective classifications. CHRISTIAN HERITAGE 73, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 49 The visiting and Class A Private 7th-ranked Christian Heritage Lions remained unbeaten and improved to 14-0 on the season with a 73-49 win at Excel Christian Academy Tuesday night. Christian Heritage, now 7-0 in Region 6-A, led 20-5 after one quarter, 38-23 at the intermission, and 55-36 after three quarters on their way to a 24-point victory. In a back-and-forth tussle, Adairsville led 11-10 after one quarter before Ringgold held leads of 24-22 at halftime and 28-27 after three quarters. Logan Hullender scored a game-high 21 points for Ringgold (5-11, 2-7). He was followed by Jayden Williams with nine points. Gaven Crunkleton led Adairsville with 14 points. Jaxon Welchel scored 13. East Paulding led 17-11 after the opening period, but the Wildcats narrowed the margin to 33-31 at halftime. The visiting Raiders then outscored Woodland 23-11 in the third quarter to take control and hold off the Wildcats for a 10-point win. Woodland struggled at the free throw line — making only 12 of 26 — or it could have been even closer. Nonetheless, the competitive turnaround for Woodland was significant following a 43-point loss at East Paulding in December. The trio of Sean Rutledge, Kristian Ford, and Sebastian Tider led the Raiders with 30, 20, and 15 points, respectively. DiAnthony Heathcock and K.J. Rogers both finished with 23 points for Woodland. Heathcock added 14 boards. Tyler Thurman and Connor McGuire contributed seven points each. Jamison Lawrence and Jaden Johnson chipped in two points apiece and Jonathan Thomas added one. The Cartersville Lady Canes were the only local high school girls team to earn a victory Tuesday night and it came on the road at LaGrange in Region 5-AAAA action. The Cass girls lost at home to unbeaten and 2nd-ranked Kell while the Adairsville girls lost at Ringgold and Woodland dropped its home game with East Paulding. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 46, LAGRANGE 42 The Lady Canes outscored host LaGrange 20-9 in the final eight minutes to escape with a 46-42 Region 5-AAAA road victory Tuesday night. The Lady Grangers led 19-8 after one quarter, 25-20 at the intermission, and were ahead 31-26 through three quarters before Cartersville rallied in the final period. Cass led 11-10 after one quarter, 30-29 at halftime, and 42-40 heading into the final period. This past week in college football, former Cartersville Hurricane Miller Forristall caught his fourth touchdown pass of the season as Alabama beat Michigan in the Citrus Bowl on New Year's Day. Meanwhile, former Canes' quarterback Trevor Lawrence continues preparations for his second College Football National Championship Game and at least eleven local basketball players made their marks in college games around the country. COLLEGE FOOTBALL MILLER FORRISTALL — University of Alabama (R-Jr., TE, Cartersville HS)… caught three passes for 36 yards including a 20-yard touchdown reception as the Crimson Tide beat Michigan New Year’s Day in the Citrus Bowl. Forristall finished the 2019 season with 15 catches for 167 yards and four touchdowns. He appeared in nine games — missing part of the season following an injury against Arkansas. The 6’5” target was on the Mackey Award Watch List in the preseason. Forristall was the Alabama coaching staff’s offensive player of the week for his play against Arkansas. TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (So., QB, Cartersville HS)… the 20-year-old quarterback continues to prepare this week for his second appearance in college football’s National Championship Game on Monday, January 13 in New Orleans.
