It took eleven innings, but the Coosa Eagles held off the Adairsville baseball team Tuesday evening in Rome, 3-2. Tigers’ pitchers Caden Gibbs (3.2 IP, 3H, 3BB, 5K) and Chase Horn (7 IP, 0H, 3BB, 10K) combined to scatter three hits and six walks with 15 strikeouts, but three unearned runs carried Coosa to victory. Coosa pitchers Caleb Shiflett and Jay Hamby were solid also. They limited the Tigers to seven hits and a single earned run while striking out 15. Adairsville scored single runs in the second and sixth innings. Coosa scored twice in the fourth and the decisive, walk-off run in the bottom of the eleventh. Both teams committed a pair of errors. Adairsville left seven runners on base. Coosa left nine. Dylan Callahan had two hits and one RBI for the Eagles. Brooks Moore had the other Coosa hit. Garrett Mishoe (double, RBI) and Hunter Hice had two hits each for Adairsville. Gibbs (double), Trace Still, and Noah Dutton had the other Tigers’ hits. Kyler Pelfrey stole a pair of bases. Halen Huskins also stole a base. Adairsville (4-2) will host Coosa (2-4) Thursday at 5 p.m. and will entertain Armuchee in a doubleheader Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

Evan Hinton fanned 14 and tossed a complete game as the Cass baseball team won a non-region road game at Class 6A Sprayberry Tuesday evening, 3-1. The win snapped a three game skid by the Colonels. Cass scored two runs in the top of the second inning and one in the top of the seventh for their three-run total. Sprayberry (3-4) picked up a run in the fourth that narrowed the Colonels’ lead to 2-1 at the time. Hinton scattered four hits and did not walk a batter although he did hit one batter. Only one of the hits off Hinton was a double. 71 of his 100 pitches were strikes. Nathan Smith drove in a run for the Colonels with a triple. Gavin Young (RBI), Logan Nelson, Bryson Markley, and Steven Spell had the other Cass hits. Matt Shook drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Cass (3-4) travels to Rockmart for a 5:30 p.m. game Thursday and will host a doubleheader with Dalton Saturday at 12 noon.

A pair of Etowah pitchers limited Cartersville to only five hits and a pair of seventh inning runs as the Class 7A defending state champion Eagles defeated Cartersville 5-2 Tuesday at Richard Bell Field in Atco. Andrew Shaw (4.2 IP, 0R, 4H, 3BB, 4K) picked up the pitching win for Etowah. Bryant Madden (2.1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) took the mound in the fifth and closed out the game. Etowah (3-6) scored three runs in the third inning and added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-0 lead. Niko Cho was the leading hitter for the Eagles with a double and a triple. Jackson Sisk finished with three RBI. Canes’ starting pitcher Mason Barnett was tagged with the loss without allowing an earned run. The Eagles scored three unearned runs in the third. Barnett allowed five hits and a walk. He struck out eight. Gage Morris (2 IP, 1K), Jake Norris (0.1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2BB), and Curtis Wilkes (0.2 IP, 1K) also pitched for the Hurricanes. Josh Davis doubled and drove in one run. Ian Inaba had an RBI and one hit. Barnett, LaDarius Winburn, and Jordan Wilkie had the other Cartersville base hits. The Canes (5-3) play at Rome Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and will play River Ridge and Forsyth Central Saturday at Forsyth Central High School in Cumming. Saturday’s games begin at 1:30 p.m.

The Adairsville High School girls and boys tennis teams lost Region 6-AAA matches Tuesday to Calhoun at the Calhoun Recreation Department. The losses dropped both Adairsville teams to 1-1 in region play. Ayers is 2-0 on the mound through the Hurricanes’ first seven games in three relief appearances and one start. He carries a 1.14 ERA through that stretch and has fanned 13 batters while only walking three. Opponents are hitting a mere .150 batting average against him. The son of Gwen and Ed Ayers, he is already taking four college level courses through joint enrollment with Georgia Highlands College and plans to continue his baseball career with the Chargers after high school graduation. Jordan Lee is the Elite Athlete of the Month for February representing Woodland High School. A senior on the Wildcats’ baseball team, the middle infielder recently went 7-for-14 during a one-week stretch that included five RBI. He is the son of Darrel and Tracy Lee, an honor student with a 3.6 GPA, and plans to continue his baseball career next season at Shorter University. “Jordan provides leadership to our team,” said Woodland head coach Colby Coursey. “He’s an outstanding young man and an outstanding baseball player.” Adairsville High School’s February Elite Athlete of the Month is Kyler Pelfrey. A senior pitcher and shortstop on the Tigers’ baseball team, he is the son of Kristi Parker and Victor Pelfrey. Pelfrey is 2-0 on the mound in the early portion of the season with 15 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.58. At the plate he has been just as productive with seven hits, 5 RBI, a .368 batting average, and a slugging percentage of .526. “Kyler is one of our leaders both on and off the field,” said Tigers’ head coach Billy Roper. “He comes to the field ready every day and always gives his best effort. The other players gravitate to him and he continues to lead them in the right direction.” Pelfrey — a three-year baseball starter — has a 3.57 GPA and is a member of the Adairsville Beta Club. He plans to continue his playing career at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville where he will major in business. The Cass High School Elite Athlete of the Month for February is Logan Vermaas. The daughter of Lourens and Anissa Vermaas, Logan is a junior and a three-year starter for the Lady Colonels’ soccer team. Through seven games this season, the Cass striker has scored 12 goals and has already accumulated more than 30 goals in her career. She is also one of the Lady Colonels’ assists leaders during that same span. BASKETBALL Ryan Davis (Francis Marion Jr., Cartersville) — Davis bounced back from a couple of low-scoring games to post a 15-point night on an efficient 5-of-9 shooting in a victory over Georgia College on Saturday. He had scored just four points in back-to-back games, including a loss to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday. In the two games this past week, Davis totaled seven rebounds, eight assists and six steals. Kimora McClinic (Middle Georgia State Fr., Cartersville) — McClinic put up 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including hitting 2 of 7 3-point attempts, in a loss to Faulkner on Thursday. It came on the heels of a scoreless outing in a one-point win over Auburn University Montgomery last Monday. Jana Morning (Berry College Fr., Cass) — Morning started and starred in both of Berry College's games in the Southern Athletic Association tournament this weekend. She scored a career high 19 points in a quarterfinal win over Centre, shooting 6 of 12 from the floor and 6 of 7 from the line. She followed that up with her first career double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds (seven offensive) in a semifinal loss to Oglethorpe. Morning also totaled five assists and seven steals in the tournament. A.J. Mosby (Alcorn State Sr., Cartersville) — Mosby continued his fantastic senior season with another stellar week for Alcorn State. He posted 18 points in a loss to Alabama State and a 24-point outing in a win over Southern. His performance against Southern included another uber-efficient shooting night — 7 of 12 from the floor and 7 of 8 from the line. Mosby had four rebounds and five assists in each game. He's currently shooting 50 percent from the floor, 40 percent from deep and 89 percent from the charity stripe. Greg Murphy (Young Harris Jr., Woodland) — Murphy had three points, two rebounds and one assist in a win over Georgia College on Wednesday. He went scoreless in a Saturday defeat against USC Aiken. Elijah Robinson (Emmanuel Sr., Excel) — Robinson continued to shoot the lights out over the past week, pushing his streak of consecutive games shooting 45 percent or higher to seven. He scored 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting in a win over North Greenville last Tuesday; he posted 14 points, while making 5 of 10 shots from the field in a loss to King (Tennessee) on Wednesday; and he dropped in 22 points after making 8 of 12 attempts, including 5 of 7 3-point tries in a Friday win over Erksine. He grabbed 21 total rebounds over the three games. Darius Thrower (Truett-McConnell So., Excel) — Thrower went scoreless with just three total shot attempts in 15 combined minutes of action during the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament. Truett-McConnell reached the championship game, but the Bears fell to Union (Kentucky) by a 73-69 score. Corey Tobin (Reinhardt Sr., Cartersville) — Tobin finished with seven points, eight rebounds and two assists in a first-round loss to Montreat in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament. Carrod Watson (North Georgia So., Woodland) — Watson exploded with two huge performances, setting his season high in consecutive games, as North Georgia closed out the regular season. He scored 16 points, while shooting 5-of-6 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from deep, in a win over Lander on Wednesday. Saturday, he went 6 for 9 from the field en route to 17 points in a loss to Georgia Southwestern. Over the two games, Watson had five rebounds. Rudy Winters (Columbus State Sr., Excel) — Winters had an uneven final week to the regular season, going off for 20 points in a win over Flager before struggling mightily in a loss to Clayton State. He shot 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from the stripe in the win, adding four rebounds and two assists. During the loss to Clayton State, Winters managed just four points, two rebounds and a steal. GOLF Maggie Ashmore (Augusta University Sr., Kingston native) — Ashmore placed fourth out of 74 in the Moon Golf Invitational, shooting an even-par 216 over the three rounds. Ashmore held a one-shot lead after shooting a 68 in the first round, and she entered the final round tied for second. Thanks in part to her standout performance, Augusta finished tied for fifth — just two strokes out of second — in the 13-team event. SOFTBALL Sierrah Gani (Georgia Highlands CC Fr., Cass) — Gani went hitless with two walks and a run scored in four games over the past week. Georgia Highlands lost twice to Enterprise Community College on Wednesday, but the Chargers bounced back to sweep Gordon State on Friday. Cassidy Howren (Reinhardt Sr., Adairsville) — Howren totaled one hit, one run scored, two walks and two RBIs during the Reinhardt Invite this past weekend. The Eagles won both of their Friday games, but they dropped a pair on Saturday to end a six-game winning streak to start the season. Sydney Hodorff (LaGrange Jr., Woodland) — LaGrange College lost all four of its games over the past seven days, but Hodorff reached base in each defeat. She had one hit apiece in three of the four contests and walked once in the other game. She has reached safely in every game this year — reaching on a base hit in all but one. Brittany Huth (Georgia Highlands Fr., Cartersville) — Huth scored a run — her third of the season — during the final of four games for Georgia Highlands last week. It helped the Chargers pull off a 4-2 win over Gordon State. Kailah Rain (Embry-Riddle Sr., Cartersville) — Rain went 6-for-17 with a walk during five games this past week. She also drove in six runs and stole two bases as Embry-Riddle went 4-1 on the week. Overall, Rain is hitting .356 on the year with seven runs scored and 10 driven in. She's only drew two walks, but she's also struck out just once. Hannah Todd (North Carolina Fr., Cartersville) — Todd saw action in three games this past week for the Tar Heels. She had scoreless outings against South Carolina (2/3 inning) and Arizona (one inning) before allowing three runs over 1 1/3 innings against Missouri. She also got one at bat during the week against the Tigers. Taylor Waits (Brewton-Parker So., Cartersville) — Waits finished 1-for-3 with an RBI in a win over Truett-McConnell on Thursday. Brewton-Parker split with Truett-McConnell. It also split with Emmanuel, and Waits went 0-for-2 as the designated hitter in one of the games. Annalyn Yantis (Samford Jr., Cartersville) — Yantis saw action in three games over the past week, pitching a total of 6 2/3 innings against Troy, Lipscomb and Indiana. Over the three contests, she allowed nine runs (four earned) on six hits and nine walks with four strikeouts. TENNIS Peyton Gollhofer (Ball State Jr., Cartersville native) — Gollhofer dropped a three-set match against Youngstown State's Noelly Longi Nsimba by scores of 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 Saturday. She did combine with Lilya Hadab to earn a 6-2 win on Line 3 Doubles — one of Ball State's two wins on the day. TRACK AND FIELD Anna Hightower (Georgia Tech Jr., Cartersville) — Hightower set a personal best and placed eighth in the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships pole vault, clearing 13 feet, 3.5 inches. Trevor Knowles (Albion College Fr., Woodland) — Knowles finished 10th in the triple jump and was part of a relay team that finished fifth in the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Association Championship this past weekend. Knowles leapt 12.17 meters. He later ran the second leg of Albion's 4x400 relay team, which finished in 3 minutes, 32.7 seconds. Samantha Patterson (Jacksonville State Sr., Woodland) — Patterson finished tied for ninth in the women's pole vault at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship meet in Charleston, Illinois. She cleared 10 feet, 6 inches. Blake Perry (Jacksonville State Sr., Cartersville) — Perry place 11th in the women's 60-meter hurdles prelims during the OVC championship meet, finishing in 9.18 seconds. BRANDON ALLEN — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., OF/P, Woodland HS)… went 1-for-2 with a walk and scored a run Thursday as the Chargers defeated Shorter University JV 10-6. GHC (12-5) travels to LaGrange College Wednesday, hosts Macomb (MI) CC Friday night and Sunday afternoon at LakePoint, and travels to East Georgia College Saturday to open GCAA play. ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Soph., LHP, Cartersville HS)… entered in the fourth inning Saturday and tossed 2.1 innings without allowing a run, hit, or walk in the Tigers’ 13-4 victory over visiting Bryant University. Anderson was credited with the pitching win. Last Wednesday, he retired only one of five batters faced and allowed three unearned runs on two hits and a walk but Auburn was able to pull out a 6-5 win over Troy at Plainsman Park. In three appearances and 4.2 innings, Anderson has yet to allow an earned run. Auburn (8-0) plays at South Alabama Tuesday night and hosts Brigham Young in a three-game series Friday and Saturday. GRAYSON BAGWELL — LaGrange College (Fr., RHP, Woodland HS)… allowed four earned runs on four hits and a pair of walks in one inning of relief work Friday, but the Panthers were able to defeat Covenant College 13-5. LaGrange (7-8, 1-2 USA South Athletic Conference) hosts Oglethorpe Tuesday and travels to Huntingdon College Friday through Sunday for a three-game conference series. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (Fr., 1B, Cass HS)… was hit by a pitch but went 0-for-3 at the plate in the Mountain Lions’ 9-2 loss at 22nd-ranked Georgia College Friday. Young Harris was 1-3 for the week with a win at Lenoir-Rhyne last Tuesday. YHC (6-8, 2-4 Peach Belt Conference) entertains Truett-McConnell University Tuesday, Cedarville (OH) University Wednesday, and host a three-game conference series with UNC Pembroke Friday through Sunday at Zell Miller Field. NOAH DANIEL — Reinhardt University (Fr., Inf, Cartersville HS)… had one plate appearance in each win Friday and Saturday over University of Rio Grande (OH) and Goshen College (IN). BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Sr., OF/P, Cass HS)… went 2-for-11 with a walk and two RBI in a three-game Conference Carolinas series at home this weekend with Erskine College. The Saints took two games from the Flying Fleet to improve to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in conference. Limestone travels to Anderson (SC) University Wednesday and will play a three-game series at Francis Marion University Friday through Sunday. CODY JOHNSON — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., RHP, Cass HS)… made a one inning, seventh inning appearance Saturday in the Chargers’ 12-4 win at LakePoint over Sinclair (OH) CC. He also pitched the seventh inning Sunday against Sinclair allowing a hit, but recorded three outs on a pair of groundouts and a flyout. GHC (12-5) travels to LaGrange College Wednesday, hosts Macomb (MI) CC Friday night and Sunday afternoon at LakePoint, and travels to East Georgia College Saturday to open GCAA play. SEAN McDERMOTT — Mercer University (Jr., 1B/DH, Adairsville HS)… was 3-for-14 at the plate this past week, was hit by a pitch, and walked twice as the Bears beat Florida A&M and swept a three-game set with UNC Asheville. In seven starts, McDermott is hitting .231 with a homer and four RBI. The Bears (6-2) play a home-and-home series with Kennesaw State Tuesday and Wednesday before hosting a three-game series with Holy Cross Saturday through next Monday. HUNTER REAID — Shorter University (Fr., Inf., Woodland HS)… made a pinch hitter plate appearance last Tuesday in the Hawks’ win over Clark Atlanta. The Hawks (7-6, 1-0) host Gulf South Conference opponent Union University (TN) in a doubleheader Monday, entertain 22nd-ranked Georgia College Tuesday, and host a three-game series with Mississippi College Saturday and Sunday. SAM SEAMAN — Gordon State CC (Fr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… made a pair of plate appearances with one walk last Tuesday in the Highlanders’ 8-2 win at Cleveland State CC. He also made a plate appearance Saturday in a 4-3 win over visiting Roane State CC. Seaman has appeared in five games and has eight official at bats with one walk and one RBI. The Cartersville boys finished first and the Lady Canes fourth at the 2018 Purple Hurricane Track and Field Invitational Saturday. Eight girls teams and eight boys teams competed in the event. Georgia Highlands College baseball won five of six games this week to improve to 12-5 on the year. The Chargers started the week by taking the rubber game of a series with Lincoln Trail (IL) CC 5-2 at LakePoint. That was followed with mid-week wins over Shorter University JV (10-6) and Emmanuel College JV (13-3) on Thursday. Georgia Highlands then took two of three against Sinclair (OH) CC to complete the impressive stretch. The visiting Tartan Pride took the series opener 9-6 on Saturday before the Chargers took the next two games 7-3 and 12-4 Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Matt Norton, Connor Dove, Jake Meyer, Matt Norton, and Drew Wilson each picked up pitching wins during the week. GHC (12-5) travels to LaGrange College Wednesday, hosts Macomb (MI) CC Friday night and Sunday afternoon at LakePoint, and travels to East Georgia College Saturday to open GCAA play.

The Adairsville Tigers and Jones County Greyhounds split a baseball doubleheader Saturday in Gray, GA. Adairsville won the opener 8-1, but Jones County blanked the Tigers in the second game, 8-0. Adairsville started fast in the first game by posting six runs in the top of the first inning and that would be plenty for Tigers’ starting pitcher Kyler Pelfrey. Pelfrey tossed six innings and allowed only one run. He scattered five hits and a walk while striking out five. Caden Gibbs needed only ten pitches to close out the seventh inning without allowing a baserunner. He fanned one. RBI singles by Halen Huskins, Garrett Mishoe, and Chase Horn highlighted the Tigers’ six-run first. Adairsville also took advantage of a hit batsman and three Greyhounds’ errors in the inning. Horn and B.J. Roper finished with two hits each. Hunter Hice and Pelfrey had the other Adairsville hits. In the second game of the doubleheader, Jones County used three pitchers to blank the Tigers, 8-0. Chandler Wooten (5.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 3BB, 1K) pitched into the sixth inning to earn the win for the Greyhounds (3-4). Huskins and Pelfrey had the only Adairsville hits in Game 2. Adairsville (4-1) plays at Coosa Tuesday, hosts Coosa Thursday, and entertains Armuchee for a doubleheader Saturday.

Woodland baseball won twice Saturday defeating South Paulding 5-4 and Central-Carroll 12-7 in non-region action at the Ballpark at Woodland. In the opening win over South Paulding, Woodland led 4-0 through four innings before the Spartans scored two in the fifth and one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to knot the score at 4-4. The Wildcats walked off with the win on a Titus Jones RBI single. In the second game, Woodland trailed Central-Carroll 7-0 before they scored four runs in the bottom of the third and exploded for eight runs in the fifth to secure the win. Bryce Evans picked up both pitching wins on the day. He worked the seventh inning against South Paulding and allowed one unearned run on two hits. He then worked four shutout innings in relief and allowed only one hit and one walk for the win over Central. Evans fanned four in the two appearances. Jordan Lee had five hits and three RBI on the day for the Wildcats. Titus Jones had three hits, one RBI, and stole four bases. Koby Stansel (4 RBI), Bailey Ward (RBI), and Dylan Webb (RBI, two SB) had two hits apiece. Chris Mills, Bryce Evans, Garrett Cornett (3 SB), and Seth McGill (2 RBI, 2 SB) added one hit each. Zach Woods drove in one run and Kaleb Chance added a stolen base. Woodland (3-2) travels to Pickens County Tuesday at 5:55 p.m., hosts Sonoraville Thursday, and travels to North Cobb and Darlington on Friday and Saturday.
