The 10th-ranked Cass Colonels showcased their offensive and defensive firepower, rolling to a 44-17 victory over the Cedartown Bulldogs at Cochran Stadium on Friday night in a Region 7-AAAA matchup.
Cass took advantage of four Cedartown fumbles. Quarterback Brodie McWhorter threw four touchdown passes, and running back Kalil Charles rushed for over 100 yards in the Colonels' victory.
The game started with a miscue for Cedartown, as they fumbled the opening kickoff. Cass’ Demarcus Balanger recovered the loose ball at the Bulldogs’ 46-yard line and set up the Colonels’ first scoring opportunity. Three plays later, McWhorter connected with Elijah Slocum on a short pass that Slocum turned into a 46-yard touchdown scamper with 11:08 left in the first quarter. Anthony Quijada’s extra point gave the Colonels a 7-0 lead.
After both teams traded three-and-outs on their next two possessions, Cass extended the lead when a Cedartown rushing attempt went awry. Cass linebacker Naz Fleurine put a helmet on the football and knocked it loose. The ball bounced into the end zone, where Bulldogs’ quarterback Wyatt Mosley fell on it for a safety with 5:38 remaining in the first, making it 9-0.

Cass’ next drive stalled after 12 plays, turning the ball over on downs at the Cedartown 33. The Bulldogs capitalized, driving 65 yards in 9 plays, sparked by a 39-yard pass from Mosley to Jaylen Johnson, to set up a 27-yard field goal by Branson Adams with 8:13 left in the second quarter, trimming the score to 9-3.
Cass answered with a 68-yard, six-play drive, capped by a McWhorter 19-yard touchdown pass to Jah Abdullah-Kortney with 5:50 before halftime. The scoring play pushed the Colonels’ lead to 16-3.
Cedartown’s troubles continued when their next possession ended in a fumble after a short pass from Mosley. Cass defenders Mason Tompkins and Cam Beauford sandwiched the receiver with a hit that knocked the ball loose. Linebacker Malachi Harris scooped up the loose ball and raced 40 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 23-3 with 4:57 left in the half.

The Bulldogs fumbled again on their next drive at their own 36, and Cass pounced. That fumble was again caused by Tompkins and recovered by defensive lineman Sabastian Castanada. After two runs totaling 18 yards by Charles, McWhorter found Abdullah-Kortney for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 4:05 remaining, making it 30-3.
The Colonels weren’t done in the half. Fleurine intercepted a Mosley slant pass on Cedartown’s next offensive play and returned it 45 yards for another defensive score with 3:49 left in the half. The 28 unanswered points in just over two minutes sent Cass into the break with a commanding 37-3 lead.
With a running clock in the second half, Cedartown showed fight.
Jaylen Johnson opened the third quarter by intercepting a McWhorter pass and returning it 35 yards for a touchdown, with Adams’ PAT cutting the deficit to 37-10 with 10:19 left in the third.
The Bulldogs later drove deep into Cass territory in the fourth quarter, aided by three pass interference penalties, but fumbled at the 28-yard line, with Cass’ John Abernathy recovering.

The Colonels responded with a 72-yard, seven-play drive, finished by McWhorter’s 16-yard touchdown pass to tight end Chase Tatum with 6:25 remaining, pushing the score to 44-10.
Cedartown managed a late 78-yard drive, with Mosley scoring on a 2-yard keeper with 1:00 left, finalizing the score at 44-17.
McWhorter led Cass with four touchdown passes. The Mississippi State commit was 7-for-20 for 122 yards with one interception. Abdullah-Kortney hauled in two scores and had three catches for 40 yards. Elijah Slocum had three receptions for 68 yards and one score, and Tatum added his 14-yard touchdown reception.
Charles rushed 20 times for 106 yards. Balanger had four carries for 18 yards, and McWhorter added one five-yard rushing attempt.
The Colonels’ defense was relentless, forcing four turnovers, including two defensive touchdowns. For Cedartown, Johnson’s pick-six and Mosley’s late score were highlights in a tough night marred by turnovers.
Cass (5-1, 2-0) extended their winning streak to five games and will travel to Woodland next Friday. Cedartown (2-4, 0-2) looks to regroup when it hosts Hiram on Friday.
