The Cass girls' and boys' soccer teams earned Region 7-AAAA wins on Tuesday night at Cedartown, and the Cartersville Lady Canes blanked visiting Wheeler in a non-region contest.

LADY COLONELS RALLY IN SECOND HALF AT CEDARTOWN

The Cass Lady Colonels overcame a first-half deficit to claim a hard-fought 2-1 region win over the Cedartown Lady Bulldogs Tuesday evening at Cedartown.

Cedartown struck first in the 16th minute, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Cass coach Kyle Calandra noted his team's strong play early on: “We played well in the first half and controlled possessions. We just couldn't finish.”

The Lady Colonels responded immediately after the break. In the 46th minute, Nat Hughes delivered a dangerous cross that was deflected off a Cedartown defender and into the net for an own goal, leveling the score at 1-1.

Cass continued to press and found the game-winner in the 65th minute. Chloe Hunt rose to head home a beautiful corner kick cross from Amy Villanueva, securing the 2-1 lead.

“The girls had another great defensive performance across the board,” Calandra said of his team's effort in holding off Cedartown the rest of the way.

The victory improves Cass to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in Region 7-AAAA. Cedartown falls to 6-4 overall and 1-4 in the region.

Cass returns to action Friday at home in Cochran Stadium, hosting Allatoona in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.

LADY CANES DOMINATE WHEELER

The Cartersville Lady Canes unleashed a dominant offensive display Tuesday night at Weinman Stadium, cruising to a convincing 7-0 win over the Wheeler Wildcats in a girls' high school soccer matchup.

Cartersville wasted little time asserting control. Just five minutes into the contest, senior forward Mallory Nicklas opened the scoring, heading home a perfectly delivered corner kick from sophomore Mary Beth Hackney.

The Canes maintained relentless pressure, peppering the Wheeler goal with shots throughout the first half. In the 25th minute, sophomore Ali Evans doubled the lead, finishing off a precise assist from freshman center back Sofia Mayorga.

Moments before the halftime whistle, sophomore Scout Hullander added a third goal, burying a clean cross from senior Lundyn Eubanks to send Cartersville into the break with a commanding 3-0 advantage.

The second half belonged almost entirely to Eubanks. The senior erupted for three straight goals, completing her first hat trick of the season and pushing the score to 6-0 with just over five minutes left to play.

Nicklas sealed the rout in the closing minutes, netting her second goal of the night off an assist from Hullander to cap the 7-0 final.

Junior goalkeeper Helen Leaming anchored the Cartersville defense with several key saves, preserving yet another shutout for the Lady Canes.

The victory showcased Cartersville's crisp passing, sharp on-field communication, and strong team chemistry — elements that fueled a complete team effort from start to finish.

The loss drops Wheeler to 2-8 on the season.

Now standing at 6-4 overall and 3-1 in region play, the Lady Canes return to action at Weinman Stadium on Thursday, March 19, hosting Southeast Whitfield in a key region matchup. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

COLONELS WIN AT CEDARTOWN ON PKs

The Cass Colonels boys soccer team showed resilience and clutch finishing Tuesday night, rallying from behind to force a 3-3 draw with the Cedartown Bulldogs before prevailing 3-1 in a penalty kick shootout to claim the Region 7-AAAA victory.

Anthony Diaz was the star of the night for Cass, accounting for all three of the Colonels' goals. Diaz struck twice in regulation and added a hat-trick goal in overtime to keep Cass alive. Tabo Mwandu provided the assist on one of Diaz's regulation goals.

Despite the back-and-forth battle that saw both teams trade leads and equalizers, neither side could find a winner in extra time, sending the match to penalties.

In the shootout, Cass converted three of its attempts with successful kicks from Diaz, Francisco Castaneda, and Louis Morales. Colonels' goalkeeper Easton Misztak delivered a heroic performance in net, turning away three of Cedartown's four penalty attempts to seal the 3-1 shootout victory and the hard-earned region points.

The result improves Cass to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in Region 7-AAAA. Cedartown falls to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the region.

Cass returns to action Friday when it hosts Allatoona in a key region matchup at 7:30 p.m.
