February 14, 2024 Cass High’s baseball team opened the 2024 season on Tuesday evening with a 7-5 victory at Paulding County. The Colonels built an early 4-0 lead and led 5-2 heading into the seventh frame. In the seventh, Cass added two insurance runs to go up 7-2 and then held on in the bottom of the inning for a 7-5 win. The Patriots (0-1) scored three times in their half of the seventh and had the potential tying run at the plate with no outs but a groundout and a pair of strikeouts by reliever Trenton Payne closed out the victory. Cass utilized six pitchers in the opener. Hunter Lovett (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 3K), Justin Peace (2 IP, 2ER, 3H, 2BB, 4K), Chase Tatum (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 2K), Jacob Johnson (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K), Cayden Roberts (4 BF, 3ER, 3H), and Payne (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) all pitched. Roberts led the Colonels’ offense with four hits including three doubles and three RBIs. Nic Wright tripled with one RBI. Jesiel Moctezuma had a solo home run while Lovett and Devan Hutchinson added one hit each. Cass (1-0) hosts Sprayberry on Thursday and Paulding County on Friday. Both games are scheduled for 5:55 p.m. starts.

February 13, 2024 The host Adairsville girls held off a tough challenge from the Bremen Lady Blue Devils Tuesday night for a 50-45 quarterfinal win in the Region 6-AAA tournament. The win by the Lady Tigers secures a berth in the Class AAA tournament and sends Adairsville to the semifinal round on Thursday night. Bremen led 10-8 after one quarter but Adairsville held narrow margins the rest of the way. The Lady Tigers led 19-15 at the intermission and 32-31 at the end of the third quarter. NaXyria Roberts scored a game-high 20 points to lead Adairsville. She made all 10 of her free throws in the fourth quarter. Aliya McBryde finished with 11 points and Alissa Winters scored five points for the Tigers. Marley Derringer and Jayda Smith led Bremen with 15 and 11 points, respectively. The Blue Devils season ends with a 12-10 record. Adairsville (16-9) will play Coahulla Creek on Thursday in the 3 p.m. semifinal. TRINITY PREP 65, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 51 Visiting Trinity Prep eliminated Excel Christian from the GAPPS Division I-A State Tournament with a 65-51 win. Trinity Prep improved to 13-13 on the season and will play Horizon Christian this weekend in the state quarterfinals. The Eagles' season ends with a 9-19 record.

February 13, 2024 The Cass girls and the Adairsville girls soccer teams collected non-region wins on Tuesday night. CASS GIRLS 3, RINGGOLD 0 The Lady Colonels led 1-0 at the intermission on a goal from freshman Malorie Rogers. Senior Elizabeth Remke was credited with an assist on the tally. In the second half, Cass added an unassisted goal by Remke and a final goal by freshman Ryland Piatt off an assist from senior Rachel Ziemer. The Lady Colonels (1-2) play at Pickens on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 5, PEPPERELL 2 The Lady Tigers led 3-1 at halftime on a goal by Jordyn Hartline and two by Alexa Damer. Hartline’s opening goal came off her corner kick in the 7th minute. Damer cashed in in the 11th and 14th minutes off feeds from Maddie Gossett and Greer Cofield. Adairsville’s second-half goals were scored by Gossett in the 41st minute off an assist from Damer and by Elle Causby in the 68th minute off an assist by Emma Ridley. February 12, 2024 The Woodland and Cass basketball teams were eliminated from the Region 7-AAAAA basketball tournament Monday evening in first-round games played at the Cartersville High Storm Center. The Cartersville boys defeated Woodland 62-49 and the Woodland girls lost to Calhoun, 47-25. The Cass girls were eliminated by Hiram, 50-40, and the Calhoun boys topped the Cass boys, 75-67. CALHOUN 47, WOODLAND GIRLS 25 The Lady Cats led 8-6 after one quarter Monday evening but Calhoun took control in the second quarter on the Jackets’ way to a 47-25 win in the first round of the Region 7-5A tournament at Cartersville High School. Calhoun outscored Woodland 17-4 in the second quarter to lead 23-12 at halftime. The Jackets extended that lead to 37-16 by the end of the third period. Saniah Dorsey scored a game-high 17 points to lead Calhoun. Kat Atha, Jaylan Moore, and Allie Duke finished with 10 points each. Gracie Shipp led Woodland with 12 points. Megan Schultz chipped in with five. Reagan Weightman and Libby Morgan added four each for the Lady Cats. Calhoun (17-9) advances to play Cartersville on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Woodland’s season ends with a 7-16 record. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 62, WOODLAND 49 The 3rd-seeded Hurricanes raced out of the gates Monday to a 19-5 lead in the first eight minutes and maintained their advantage the rest of the way in a 62-49 first-round win. Woodland got within single digits on multiple occasions, but couldn’t quite overcome the early Cartersville lead. The Canes led 37-19 at halftime and 46-34 through three quarters. Kaden Baldwin led Cartersville with 14 points. Ced McClinic scored 13. Reed Ezell tossed in 10 and Jamauri Brice contributed eight points for the Canes. Cartersville (12-13) advances to face No. 2-seed Dalton at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The win also secured a state tournament berth. Woodland’s season ends with a 7-18 mark. HIRAM 50, CASS GIRLS 40 The Lady Colonels made a few runs at Hiram in the second half but could never get over the hump in a 50-40 loss in the first round of the Region 7-5A tournament Monday night at Cartersville’s Storm Center. Hiram led at each quarter stop: 15-9 after one period, 29-18 at halftime, and 38-31 at the end of the third quarter. Taylor Crawford and Hadiya Kennerly led the Lady Hornets with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Zion Hayes paced Cass with 14 points and added 11 rebounds. Kiana McDaniel finished with eight points. Neveah Woods and Olivia Woods contributed seven points each for the Lady Colonels. Hiram (12-13) advances to play top-seeded Dalton in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday night. The season ends for the Cass girls with a 15-11 record. CALHOUN 75, CASS BOYS 67 In a game of scoring streaks Monday night, Calhoun finished strong in the fourth quarter to eliminate Cass at the Region 7-5A Tournament at Cartersville High School, 75-67. Cass led 21-15 after one quarter and was up 41-33 at the intermission. Calhoun made up the eight-point deficit in the third quarter to knot the score at 51-all. Landon Chattam led Calhoun with 21 points. Daniel Steele followed with 17 and Emaree Winston finished with 16 points for the Yellow Jackets. Kyron McClendon scored 23 points for Cass. Camari Nettles contributed 18 and Kevin Henderson added 12 for the Colonels. Calhoun (9-15) advances to Wednesday night’s semifinal round to face top-seeded Hiram. He did not receive a decision but the Scots lost 10-6 to Alma College (Michigan). Covenant (1-2) won one game in the three-game series. The Scots host North Park University (Illinois) for a three-game set this Friday and Saturday. STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Grad student, Cass HS) … went 4-for-12 at the plate with a home run, four walks, and four runs scored as the Mountain Lions swept a three-game series at West Georgia. Spell has hit safely in all six games this season. YHC (6-0) plays at Lee University on Tuesday and has a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at Columbus State from Friday through Sunday. PRESTON WELCHEL — Cumberland University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 3-for-6 with two walks, one run scored, and four RBIs as the Phoenix split two home games with 14th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan. Cumberland (1-5) plays at Reinhardt on Tuesday afternoon, hosts a doubleheader with Johnson University (Tennessee) on Friday, and entertains University of St. Francis (Illinois) with single games on Saturday and Sunday. COHEN WILBANKS — Georgia Gwinnett College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … in starts against Missouri Baptist and William Carey (Mississippi) this past weekend, the Grizzlies catcher was 0-for-5 with one walk and one sacrifice. Georgia Gwinnett went 3-1 on a road trip beating Central Methodist (Missouri) and 10th-ranked Missouri Baptist in Sterlington, Louisiana. They then beat Talladega University but lost to 4th-ranked William Carey in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Grizzlies (7-1) host Point Park (Pennsylvania) on Friday and Saturday with a single game against Toccoa Falls College on Saturday night. JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … in four games last week Wilkie was 1-for-10 with two walks, one RBI, and three runs scored. He also had one stolen base. The Jags lost to Erskine College last Tuesday and swept a three-game weekend series with Kentucky Wesleyan. Augusta (3-4) plays at Emmanuel on Tuesday before traveling to Melbourne, Florida for a three-game series at Florida Tech on Friday and Saturday.

February 11, 2024 Georgia Highlands baseball swept a four-game series this past Friday and Saturday with visiting Lincoln Trail College (Illinois) and improved to 10-0 on the season. The Chargers won 4-2 and 3-2 on Friday and collected a pair of 11-1 wins on Saturday. GHC pitchers Hunter Ward and Brodie Chestnut picked up wins in relief performances on Friday. Michael Sharman went six innings and allowed just one earned run on seven hits and one walk to win Saturday’s first game. Trip Dovale collected his second pitching win in the second game allowing no earned runs across four innings with eight strikeouts. Luke Orfi had eight hits in the series including a double and three RBIs. Ali Banks followed with seven hits in the series including one home run, one double, and five RBIs. Ryan Wideman finished the series with five hits including a homer, two doubles, and four RBIs. Grayson Godbee (two RBIs), Will Cawthon (one RBI), and Davis Newman (homer, double, three RBIs) had four hits in the series. The Chargers (10-0) play a doubleheader at Walters State CC on Friday and will host Walters State for two games on Sunday.

February 11, 2024 Georgia Highlands softball dropped all four games played in doubleheaders this past Wednesday and Saturday. The Chargers lost a pair of 8-0 decisions to visiting Snead State on Wednesday and lost 8-0 and 22-6 to Walters State CC at home on Saturday. It was a tough week for the Georgia Highlands’ offense. The Chargers averaged only four hits per game in the four-game stretch. Avery Fisher had three hits for the week. Haylee Dishmon (RBI), Ally Graden (RBI), Hayden Joyner (RBI), and Raegan Ford (RBI) produced two hits during the week. GHC (2-7), who has lost seven straight, hosts Bevil State CC for two games on Tuesday and takes on Cleveland State CC at home on Saturday. Both doubleheaders are 1 p.m. starts.

February 11, 2024 The Cartersville High School Track and Field team participated this past Saturday in a five-way meet at Rockmart. The Cartersville boys won the meet with 81.5 points. Rockmart was second with 45.5 points followed by Bremen (18), North Cobb Christian (15), and Mount Bethel Christian. The Cartersville girls placed second with 41 points. Rockmart won the girls’ meet with 59 points. Bremen (19) was third followed by Mount Bethel Christian and North Cobb Christian with 18 points each. February 10, 2024 Woodland Wrestling won the Class 5A Section A tournament Saturday held at Harris County High School. The Wildcats finished with 126 points followed by Dalton (92), Cass (89), Coffee (79), and Ware County (79) in the top five. Cartersville (58) placed sixth. The sectional at Harris County was one of two in the 5A classification. The top six wrestlers in each weight division from each sectional have advanced to next weekend’s Class 5A State Championship Tournament at the Macon Centreplex. The tournament will begin on Thursday with state title bouts on Saturday.
