August 9, 2025 Cass' Kylie Gentry delivers a pitch. Cass softball dropped a pair of tournament games Saturday at Hamilton Crossing, falling 4-0 to Hart County and 5-3 to Rockmart. HART COUNTY 4, CASS 0 Hart County pitcher Chesnee Strickland scattered four hits and two walks to keep Cass off the scoreboard Saturday. Strickland struck out six of the 25 batters she faced. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the second inning and added two more in the top of the sixth to secure their win. Natalie Hughes, Shyia Woods, KK Evans, and Kylie Gentry had one hit each for Cass. Bailey York (6 IP, 4R, 1ER, 8H, 3BB, 5K) pitched all six innings for the Lady Colonels. Hart County improved to 3-2. ROCKMART 5, CASS 3 Rockmart scored four runs in the fourth inning and added an insurance run in the fifth en route to a 5-3 win over Cass on Saturday at Hamilton Crossing Park. Cass narrowed the margin to 4-3 in the fourth inning, but got no closer. Kylie Gentry (6 IP, 5ER, 9H, 1BB, 5K) pitched all six frames for the Colonels and was tagged with the loss. Autumn Smith (two RBI), Shyia Woods (RBI), Natalie Hughes, Harlee Thomason, Molli Morrow, Bailey York, Emma Gibson, and KK Evans had one hit in the loss. Rockmart improved to 4-1. Cass (2-3, 1-1) hosts Wheeler on Monday at 6 p.m. and returns to Region 7-4A play on Tuesday at home against Southeast Whitfield.

August 8, 2025 Friday's softball action saw local teams win five of six games played. WOODLAND 19, CHAPEL HILL 8 The Lady Cats earned their first win of the 2025 season Friday evening at Hamilton Crossing Park by defeating the Chapel Hill Panthers, 19-8. Woodland scored ten runs in the top of the first inning and took advantage of 19 walks issued by Panther pitchers. Bella Kuykendall (4 IP, 3R, 2ER, 5H, 1BB, 3K) picked up the pitching win for the Wildcats. Kylee Poston (0.0 IP, 5R, 4ER, 3H, 1BB) also pitched for Woodland. Poston had three hits, including one double and four RBI. Kamryn Smith followed with two hits and four RBI. Bailey Ryan (two RBI) and Bailey Gerstner added one hit. Ashlyn Baines and Kuykendall contributed two RBI. Sonny Hicks, Gracie Korb, Charlotte Peterson, Lillian Hollis, and Madison White added one RBI each. HART COUNTY 11, WOODLAND 0 The Bulldogs rattled off fourteen hits and scored in all four of their offensive frames Friday night in an 11-0 win over Woodland. The Lady Cats managed only two hits — one each by Bailey Ryan and Bailey Gerstner — in the loss. Bella Kuykendall (2 IP, 5ER, 6H, 2BB) suffered the pitching loss for the Wildcats. Kylee Poston (2 IP, 6ER, 8H) pitched in relief. Woodland (1-4, 0-2) hosts Cartersville on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE 9, WALKER 0 Pitcher Ashlyn Carlton tossed a five-inning, two-hitter Friday evening and fanned eight as the Lady Tigers won 9-0 at Walker in Cobb County. Carlton needed just 64 pitches and faced only 18 batters in her complete-game effort. Adairsville grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, added five runs in the fourth, and two more in the top of the fifth inning. Lillianne Gunter (three RBI), Ashlynn Durden (double, two RBI), and Cadey Evans led the Adairsville offensive attack with two hits. Ansley Powell (double, RBI), Carlton (double, RBI), and Annabelle Mitchell added one hit. The Wolverines slipped to 0-1 to begin their season. The Lady Tigers (2-1) host Northwest Whitfield on Monday at 5 p.m. and Calhoun on Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. CARTERSVILLE 11, NORTH MURRAY 3 Although the Lady Canes trailed 3-0 in the middle of the third inning Friday afternoon, they posted eleven runs over their subsequent three frames to beat the North Murray Mountaineers 11-3 in five innings. The game was played as part of a tournament at Calhoun. Cartersville out-hit North Murray 14 to 2. Presley Crabbe (5 IP, 3ER, 2H, 2BB, 6K) earned the pitching victory for Cartersville. Addi Burns led the Hurricanes’ offense with three hits. LaKiaya Banks (double, three RBI), Kinsey Woodard (two RBI), Zoie Shiflett (home run, two RBI), Miley Jo Williams (RBI), and Kennedy Crenshaw (double, RBI) contributed two hits. Sophia Harper added one hit. CARTERSVILLE 1, MURRAY COUNTY 0 Pitcher Zoie Shiflett scattered three hits and one walk Friday evening in Calhoun to shut out Murray County, 1-0. The Lady Canes’ ace struck out seven. Cartersville pushed across the game’s only run in the bottom of the third when LaKiaya Banks doubled, moved to third on a hit by Kinsey Woodard, and later scored on an RBI single by Kennedy Crenshaw. All three hits that produced the Canes’ run came with two outs in the inning. Banks and Woodard finished with two hits. Crenshaw (RBI), Shiflett, and Sam Evans added one hit. Cartersville (5-0) visits Murray County on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and Woodland on Tuesday for a Region 7-4A game at 5:30 p.m. CASS 11, CHAPEL HILL 3 The Lady Colonels needed only five hits and took advantage of eleven walks and two hit batters by Panthers’ pitchers to defeat Chapel Hill 11-3 Friday night at Hamilton Crossing Park. Cass scored at least two runs in each of their four offensive frames in the five-inning victory. KK Evans (sac fly, RBI), Kylie Gentry (RBI), Shyia Woods (RBI), Natalie Hughes, and Molli Morrow had one hit each for the Colonels. Braelyn Franklin (sac fly), Harlee Thomason (sac fly), and Bailey York added one RBI. Cass (2-1, 1-1) faces Hart County on Saturday at 9 a.m. and will host Wheeler on Monday.

August 7, 2025 The Cartersville Lady Canes walked off with a 2-1 home win Thursday over visiting Cass with a game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The game was a pitcher’s duel between Zoie Shiflett of Cartersville and Kylie Gentry of Cass. Both hurlers went the distance in the circle. Shiflett allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk with eleven strikeouts. Gentry yielded two runs (none earned) on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts. The Lady Colonels committed three errors. Cartersville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by Shiflett. Cass tied the score in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Gentry. The Lady Canes’ winning run scored on an infield error after Kennedy Crenshaw and Shiflett started the frame with hits. Kinsey Woodard had two hits for Cartersville. Sophia Harper, Sam Porter, Carder Brock, Crenshaw, and Shiflett added one hit. Braelyn Franklin, Sydney Satterfield, Shyla Woods, Harlee Thomason, and Bailey York had one hit for the Lady Colonels. Cass (1-1, 1-1) has tournament games Friday and Saturday with Chapel Hill, Hart County, and Rockmart at Hamilton Crossing Park. Cartersville (3-0, 2-0) faces Murray County and North Murray on Saturday in a tournament at Calhoun. CEDARTOWN 8, WOODLAND 0 The Woodland Lady Cats lost 8-0 at Cedartown Thursday evening in a Region 7-4A matchup. Cedartown scored in each offensive frame, and Lady Bulldogs’ pitcher, Kristen Cash, limited Woodland to only two hits in the five-inning contest. Lillian Hollis and Ashlynn Baines had one hit each for the Lady Cats. Evelyne Tucker (3 IP, 6R, 4ER, 5H, 2BB) and Bella Kuykendall (1 IP, 2ER, 3H) shared pitching duties for Woodland. ZION - CARROLL 14, ADAIRSVILLE 0 Mt. Zion-Carroll pitcher, Harlee Weatherford, tossed a four-inning, one-hitter Thursday afternoon and blanked visiting Adairsville, 14-0. The host Eagles (2-0) scored five runs in the first inning, four in the second, and five more in the third for their total. Chloe Hill had the only hit for the Lady Tigers — a one-out single in the second inning. Adairsville split pitching duties between Maddie Baggett (1 IP, 6R, 3ER, 4H, 1BB, 2K), Hill (1 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H, 0BB), and Ansley Powell (1 IP, 5R, 1ER, 2H, 3BB, 1K). - Branton fourth at 47th Georgia Senior Amateur Golf Championship
August 6, 2025 Chad Branton congratulates champion Jack Larkin (right) during Wednesday's final round at the 47th GSGA Senior Amateur Golf Championship at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw. Many of the state’s top senior amateur golfers aged 55 and over competed Monday through Wednesday at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw for the 47th Georgia State Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship. Jack Larkin of Atlanta carded rounds of 70-66-72 (8-under) on the 6,600-yard, par-72 course to win the 2025 title. He finished three shots ahead of Bob Royak of Alpharetta and five shots better than third-place Danny Nelson of Savannah. Chad Branton of Cartersville finished at 1-under par (71-70-74) and tied with Doug Hanzel of Savannah for fourth place. Other local competitors included Scott Davenport of Marietta and Cartersville Country Club, who tied for 33rd. Charles Wilson of Cartersville was 55th, and Kevin Deems of Taylorsville finished 58th. Craig Stewart of Adairsville and Larry Clark of Kingston participated in the Championship, but failed to make the 36-hole cut following Tuesday's round.

The Cartersville Lady Canes sent fifteen batters to the plate in the top of the first inning and scored eleven runs Tuesday night en route to a 13-0 road win in four innings. Zoie Shiflett hit a first-inning, three-run home run and finished with two hits and four RBI. Kennedy Crenshaw (two RBI), Kinsey Woodard (double, RBI), and LaKiaya Banks also had two hits for the Lady Canes. Gentry scattered five hits and three walks, allowing three earned runs. Woodland and Cass were tied 2-2 through 4-½ innings, but the Lady Colonels posted four runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth to secure the win. Evelyne Tucker (4.1 IP, 4R, 2ER, 5H, 2BB) and Bella Kuykendall (1.2 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H, 2BB) shared the pitching duties for the Lady Cats. Molli Morrow (RBI) and Braelyn Franklin had two hits for Cass. Shyla Woods (RBI), Bailey York (RBI), KK Evans (RBI), Natalie Hughes, and Harlee Thomason added one hit. Gentry produced one RBI. August 4, 2025 The Adairsville and Cartersville softball teams opened their 2025 seasons on Monday with road victories at Paulding County and Rockmart, respectively. ADAIRSVILLE 6, PAULDING COUNTY 5 The Adairsville Lady Tigers trailed 3-0 in the early innings Monday evening, but rallied over the final five frames to pull out a season-opening 6-5 win at Paulding County. Maddie Baggett collected the pitching victory by working the final 6-⅓ innings in the circle. She allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Ashlynn Durden led the Tigers’ bats with two hits and one RBI. Ansley Powell had one hit with two RBI. Ashlyn Carlton produced a triple with one RBI, and Alivia Joslin had one hit and one RBI. Adairsville (1-0) is scheduled to play at Walker on Tuesday at 5 p.m. CARTERSVILLE 12, ROCKMART 8 It took ten innings Monday night, but the Cartersville Lady Canes opened their 2025 season with a 12-8 victory at Rockmart. The two teams battled to a 6-6 tie through regulation, and both teams scored two runs in the ninth inning before Cartersville put the game away with a four-run top of the tenth inning. Presley Crabbe (2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 4K) picked up the pitching win in relief of Cartersville's starting pitcher, Zoie Shiflett (8 IP, 6R, 4ER, 10H, 2BB, 8K). Sophia Harper had four hits, including one double, for the Lady Canes’ offense. Taryn Bradley had three hits and three RBI. Shiflett also had three hits with one double and one RBI. The 26-year-old was also 1-for-3 in four other pinch-hitting appearances last week at home against the Chicago Cubs and at Washington. Seigler is now 6-for-32 (.188) with three RBI and two stolen bases since moving up to the Brewers from Triple-A Nashville at the beginning of July. Milwaukee (67-44) entered the week with a two-game lead over the Cubs in the National League Central. The Brewers play a three-game series at the Atlanta Braves and host three games with the New York Mets this week. MiLB MASON BARNETT — Las Vegas Aviators (Oakland A’s Triple-A affiliate; 4th-year pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a four-inning start and was charged with the pitching loss July 29 at home against the Reno Aces. Barnett allowed six earned runs on six hits and two walks. He hit one batter and struck out eight. The 24-year-old is 5-2 this season in 21 appearances and 19 starts. He has 99 strikeouts in 100 innings pitched with a 5.67 ERA. Las Vegas (65-45 overall) enters the week with a 13-19 record in the Pacific Coast League West second-half schedule. The Aviators play a six-game series this week at the Salt Lake Bees. LOGAN MARTIN — Quad Cities River Bandits (Kansas City Royals High-Class A affiliate; 3rd-year pro; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … did not make a pitching start last week, but is 8-4 for the season in 18 starts. The 24-year-old right-hander has 65 strikeouts in 79-⅓ innings with a 3.97 ERA. The River Bandits (20-15 second-half schedule / 59-42 overall in the Midwest League West Division) host a six-game series this week with the Beloit Sky Carp. PGA TOUR AMERICAS BUCK BRUMLOW — (1st year pro; University of Georgia; Cartersville HS) … shot 73-70 (1-over par), but missed the 36-hole cut at the Osprey Valley Open last week held at TPC Toronto in Caledon, Ontario, Canada. Sixty-eight players qualified for the weekend at 5-under par, with Carson Bacha winning the tournament in a playoff over Jay Card III. The duo entered their sudden-death playoff at 23-under-par for the tournament. This week, the PGA TOUR Americas plays the BioSteel Championship at Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, Ontario, on Thursday through Sunday.
- Clyburn ties for eleventh at the Georgia PGA Georgia Open
August 3, 2025 R.B. Clyburn finished T11 at the 2025 Georgia Open Cartersville resident and amateur golfer, R.B. Clyburn, tied for eleventh this past weekend at the Georgia PGA Golf Pro Payments Georgia Open hosted by Dalton Country Club. Clyburn held the tournament lead at its midway point after opening with rounds of 66 and 69 on the 6,900-yard, par-71 layout. He finished with a 74 and a 70, but the final round was played on just 17 holes due to unplayable conditions on Hole No. 4 in Dalton on Sunday. His 71-hole total was an even par 279. Amateur Nate Gahman of Albany shot 9-under par to win the 2025 Georgia Open title by two shots over professional Anthony Maccaglia of Duluth. Professional Ruan Pretorius of Augusta and amateur Dalton Burts of Peachtree Corners tied for third place with 6-under-par totals. Jake Wehunt, Chanc Willis, and Dalton Henson of Cartersville missed the 36-hole cut.

August 3, 2025 Woodland softball opened its 2025 campaign this past Friday with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Model in Rome. Both teams were strong in the pitching circle, but Model (1-0) pushed across single runs in the bottom of the first and third innings to outproduce the Lady Cats. Woodland’s lone run scored on a two-out, RBI single by Kamryn Smith, scoring Sonny Hicks, who had reached base earlier on a Blue Devils’ error. Evelyne Tucker (5 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 5BB, 3K) made the pitching start for Woodland and was tagged with the loss. Bella Kuykendall worked a scoreless sixth inning in the circle, allowing no hits or walks with one strikeout. Woodland (0-1) totaled five hits in the contest. Ashlyn Baines was 3-for-3. Smith and Bailey Ryan had the other hits for the Lady Cats. Two other scheduled games for Woodland were rained out on Saturday. Up next for the Lady Cats is their Region 7-AAAA opener at Cass on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
- Brumlow, Team Georgia win '25 Kiltie Cup
August 2, 2025 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com Local junior golfer, Bodie Brumlow, was part of Team Georgia that won the 2025 Kiltie Cup on July 27-28 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The international team event, featuring Georgia State Golf Association junior players 18 and under, competed against Scottish Golf representatives. The competition included Mixed Four-Ball, Foursomes, and Singles match play utilizing the Nassau scoring system. Each match was competed for three total points -- one for the front nine, one for the back nine, and one for the total round. Brumlow, a Cartersville High School junior, partnered with Kylie Chung of Cumming to win three points for Team Georgia in the Mixed Four-Ball on Sunday. The duo won the front nine 2&1, the back nine 3&2, and the overall 4&3 over Kiron Gribble (Edinburgh) and Jodie Graham (Larkhall). Georgia led Scotland 6-½ to 5-½ following the first day of competition. On the final day, Scotland rallied in the Foursomes portion to outscore Georgia 7-½ to 4-½ and took a 13 to 11 lead. Brumlow was paired with Grant Odom of Statesboro, and the Georgia pair lost all three points, 1-up, 1-up, and 2&1. In the singles portion on Monday, Team Georgia rallied to win 16-8 and take the Kiltie Cup by a final score of 27 to 21. Brumlow was one of four Georgians to win all three points in singles. He defeated Kai Laing of Bonnyrigg 4&3, 2&1, and 6&4. Molly Spector of Atlanta, Grace Lee of Suwanee, and Odom also won all three points for Georgia. Bear Dollander of Savannah and Chung added two-point wins for Team Georgia. THE STORY BEHIND THE KILTIE CUP : Stewart "Kiltie" Maiden was well-known for his teaching and club building and has been recognized for his expertise of the golf swing. Maiden was born in Angus (Carnoustie), Scotland, in 1886. Following his brothers, he came to the United States, specifically to be the golf professional at the East Lake facility, in 1908. He spent nearly 40 years in America, mainly in Georgia, before he died in 1948. Among the many golfing legends whom Maiden taught during his career are the great Bobby Jones, Alexa Stirling, Perry Adair, Watts Gunn, and Charlie Yates, all members of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame. Maiden's most-famous pupil, Bobby Jones, once said, "The best luck I ever had in golf was when Stewart Maiden came from Carnoustie, Scotland, to be the professional at East Lake." Stewart Maiden was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame in 2016.
- Cartersville Little League 12U eliminated at Southeast Region Tourney with loss to Virginia

Cartersville Little League 12U battled Virginia into extra innings on Friday afternoon, but fell to Front Royal Little League, 8-7. The loss eliminated Cartersville in the double-elimination Southeast Region Tournament in Warner Robins. The two teams battled back and forth for eight innings. Cartersville led 3-1 after two frames, but Front Royal knotted the score 3-3 through the fourth. Cartersville regained the advantage, 5-3, with two runs in the top of the fifth, but single runs by Virginia in the bottom of the fifth and sixth sent the game to extra innings tied 5-5. Cartersville 12U posted single runs in the top of the seventh and eighth, but Virginia pulled the game out with a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to walk off with the victory. The Cartersville defense got out of the fifth inning by retiring the final out of the frame in a run-down between third base and home plate. Cartersville utilized four pitchers in its loss. Hayden Stewart made a two-inning start, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Grayson Dean allowed one run on two walks in the third inning and was relieved by Hayes Burris, who gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and four walks. Burris fanned six of 23 batters faced. Sawyer Ezell suffered the tough-luck pitching loss, working the final 1-⅓ innings. Ezell allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk with two strikeouts. “I’m proud of my boys,” said manager Andy Burris following the game. “We saw a lot of growth this spring and summer. This is a great group of kids, parents, and coaches, and we received incredible support from the Cartersville community.” Virginia out-hit Cartersville thirteen to eleven, with Remi Wines (two RBI), Titus Good (RBI), Miles Henry, and TJ Cook pacing Front Royal with two hits each. Emory Harris (double, RBI), Sawyer White, and Dean had two hits for Cartersville. Harris Pressley (RBI), Carter Harris (RBI), Gavin Ham (RBI), Connor Murphy, and Messiah Carter added one hit. Burris walked twice and produced one RBI. “We appreciate all the well wishes,” added Burris. “I wish we could have won a few games and advanced to Williamsport, but so proud to be a part of this incredible experience. Little League did a great job. It was first class all the way.” Cartersville Little League 12U finishes the year with an 8-2 mark in tournament play. Cartersville won District 1 with four straight wins and followed that with four consecutive victories to win the Georgia title. “We are excited for the future age groups coming through Cartersville Little League,” added Burris. “We’re in a good spot moving forward with lots of good young talent that can make it back to Regionals.” Team members: Hayes Burris, Messiah Carter, Grayson Dean, Sawyer Ezell, Gavin Ham, Carter Harris, Emory Harris, Micah Mitcham, Connor Murphy, Harris Pressley, Hayden Stewart, and Sawyer White.
