Adairsville Lady Tigers product Nakiyah Washington averaged 16 points across three conference games this week for the Piedmont Lions. That stretch included a double-double performance Sunday at home against Huntingdon College. In men's basketball action this week, former Woodland standout DiAnthony Heathcock added to his collection of double-doubles last Wednesday with a 19-point, 16-rebound performance for Columbia International in an overtime win at St. Andrews. GOLF BUCK BRUMLOW - University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS) … helped the 13th-ranked Bulldogs to a fourth place finish last Monday through Wednesday at the Southwestern Invitational played at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, California. Georgia finished behind winner Arizona State, runner-up Pepperdine and Washington. Brumlow, who tied for 27th overall, fired rounds of 70-74-75 and was fourth among the Bulldogs. Georgia returns to action February 13-15 in the Puerto Rico Classic. SWIMMING GRAYSON BREEDLOVE — Lenoir Rhyne University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … was a member of the 400-yard medley relay team (4:33.59) that finished third; finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.33); and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (29.77) as the Lady Bears defeated Lees-McRae College Friday. The team also lost a meet with No. 1-ranked Queens University Saturday but those results were not available. Next for LRU is the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship Thursday through Sunday. HARPER POWELL — Florida Tech (Fr., Adairsville HS) … in a 163-97 loss last Friday to Florida Southern, Powell swam a leg on the second place 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:44.75) and finished seventh in three other events: 400-yard medley relay (4:20.30), 50-yard freestyle (25.65), and 100-yard freestyle (1:00.11). The Panthers swim next at the Sunshine State Conference Championship in the Long Center in Clearwater, Florida February 16-20. NBA G-LEAGUE ASHTON HAGANS — Raptors 905 (Cartersville native, Newton HS) … the former Kentucky Wildcats’ point guard scored 13 points, dished out nine assists, and grabbed three rebounds last Wednesday in a 123-116 home win over the Motor City Cruise. It’s a busy week for the Eastern Conference-leading Raptors (9-2). They host the Capital City Go-Go Monday night, the Windy City Bulls Tuesday and Thursday nights, and the Delaware Blue Coats Saturday afternoon. COLLEGE BASKETBALL JUSTICE HAYES — South Georgia Tech CC (So., Cass HS) … scored three points with five rebounds and a pair of assists in the Jets’ 99-73 win Wednesday at Andrew College. Hayes then added five points, two rebounds, and two steals in a 95-71 home win Saturday over East Georgia CC. South Georgia Tech (13-9, 5-3) is tied for third in the GCAA standings. The Jets play at South Georgia CC Wednesday night and host South Crescent Tech Saturday afternoon. DiANTHONY HEATHCOCK — Columbia International University (So., Woodland HS) … added another double-double to his 2021-22 season by scoring 19 points and grabbing 16 rebounds Wednesday night during a 123-117 overtime win at St. Andrews (NC). Heathcock also had one assist and one steal in that victory. On Saturday afternoon, he added 11 points, eight rebounds, one steal, and one assist in an 84-73 loss at Union College (KY). CIU (12-8, 8-7 Appalachian Athletic Conference) plays at Kentucky Christian Monday night, hosts Truett McConnell Thursday night, and travels to Reinhardt Saturday afternoon. T.J. HORTON — Georgia Highlands College (So., Cartersville HS) … scored 13 points with eight rebounds, two steals, and two assists January 24 in a 62-51 home win over Central Georgia Tech. He then scored three points with three assists, one rebound, and one steal in a 76-71 home victory Saturday over Albany Tech. JAYLON PUGH — Furman University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … scored three points and had one rebound in Saturday’s 80-50 win at Mercer. The Paladins (16-7, 8-2 Southern Conference) have now won four straight and will host The Citadel Wednesday night and UNC-Greensboro Saturday afternoon. JOSIE SUMMERVILLE — North Park University (Sr., Adairsville HS) … after not playing in last Wednesday’s 55-48 win at Carthage College, Summerville came off the Vikings’ bench Saturday to score two points, grab two rebounds, and block a shot in a 65-58 win at Elmhurst University. NPU (13-5, 6-4 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) hosts conference games this week against North Central College Wednesday night and Augustana College (IL) Saturday. NAKIYAH WASHINGTON — Piedmont College (Jr., Adairsville HS) … averaged 16 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, one block, and one steal in three conference wins this past week. The Lions beat Brevard College Wednesday night at home and won 78-71 at Maryville College (TN) Saturday. In Sunday’s 76-57 win over Huntingdon College, Washington had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Piedmont (16-3, 10-1 USA South Conference) currently sits in second place in the West Division. The Lions travel to Brevard Tuesday, host Agnes Scott College Friday, and will entertain Wesleyan University Sunday. TRACK AND FIELD TERRY BERDIN — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) … was 20th in the 55 meter sprint preliminaries Saturday at the University of the South Tiger Indoor Invitational in Sewanee, Tennessee. The Eagles will participate this Sunday in the Life University Indoor/Outdoor Meet in Marietta. TREVOR KNOWLES — Albion University (Grad Student, Woodland HS) … placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 45-05.75 (13.86m) and was fifth in the long jump at 22-02.05 (7.08m) Saturday at the Wittenberg Steemer Showcase in Springfield, Ohio. He also placed 27th in the 60 meter dash (7.53). Next for the Britons is the Concordia Invitational in Ypsilanti, Michigan Friday.

The Excel Christian Academy boys basketball team built double-digit leads on several occasions Saturday night at The Weber School in Atlanta, but the Eagles offense went cold late and lost a non-region game to the host Rams, 52-49. The Eagles led 16-8 after one quarter; 28-24 at the intermission; and 39-34 heading into the decisive fourth quarter. Caleb Ouanounov and Jackson Nozick led The Weber School with 19 and 13 points, respectively. Elijah Payne led Excel with 19 points. Jakaden Barkley followed with 12. Jacob Taylor scored 11 and Trey Webb chipped in three points for the Eagles. Weber improved to 7-10 on the season with their win. ECA (10-11, 1-6 in Region 7-A-Private) returns to region play Tuesday night at home against Walker in a 7:30 p.m. tip.

Georgia Highlands College softball opened the 2022 season Friday with a doubleheader in Florida against Lake-Sumter State. The Chargers dropped both games falling 8-6 and 8-2. GHC started fast in the opener scoring four runs in the top of the first inning, but Lake-Sumter tied the game in the bottom of the third and scored four more times over their final three frames. In Game 2, the Lakehawks led 5-1 through the first three innings and held on for an 8-2 win. The Chargers scored single runs in the second and fifth innings. Haley Robinson had four hits and three RBIs in the doubleheader for Georgia Highlands. Madison Dennis and Hailey Cronic (2 RBIs) both finished with three hits on the day. Emma Veitch added a two-run home run in the opening game. Maggie Schandera (4IP, 7R, 5ER, 6H, 3BB) started in the circle and suffered the Game 1 pitching loss. Veitch (2.2IP, 5R, 1ER, 2H, 3BB, 1K) was the starting pitcher and took the loss in Game 2.

The Adairsville girls soccer team only led 2-1 at halftime Friday night over visiting Temple, but scored six times in the second half to win 8-3. Megan Hardin and Kaylee Jordan both scored three goals each to power Adairsville. Hardin also added one assist. Emma Ridley (one assist), Jordyn Hartline (two assists), and Emma Collins also scored goals for Adairsville (1-0-1) Next for the Lady Tigers is a home game Tuesday against Darlington.

The Adairsville and Woodland basketball teams dropped region games on the road Friday night. The Lady Tigers and Tigers fell at LaFayette while the Lady Cats and Wildcats lost games at Blessed Trinity. LAFAYETTE 57, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 48 Jenna Baker scored 19 points to help lead the host Lady Ramblers to a 57-48 win Friday night over Adairsville. Alissa Winters scored 12 points and Haley Stiles added 10 for the Lady Tigers. LaFayette improved to 8-11 on the season and 4-9 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (10-10, 3-9) travels to Coahulla Creek Tuesday for a 6 p.m. tip. LAFAYETTE 75, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 65 After falling behind 20-8 in the opening quarter Friday night at LaFayette, the Adairsville boys rallied in the second quarter to trail by only three at halftime, 33-30. The 6th-ranked Ramblers then used a strong third quarter performance to build another 12-point lead, 60-48, before holding on for a 10-point region win. Aiden Hadaway and Junior Barber led the Ramblers with 29 and 28 points, respectively. Adairsville was led by T.J. Printup with 25 points. Tre Winters followed with 19 and Tre Mitchell scored 10 for the Tigers. LaFayette stayed undefeated this season improving to 20-0 overall and 13-0 in region action. Adairsville (11-9, 7-5) travels to Coahulla Creek Tuesday night to take on the region-foe Colts. BLESSED TRINITY 64, WOODLAND GIRLS 29 The Lady Titans placed three players in double figures in a 64-29 win Friday night over visiting Woodland. Christa Lair (17), Maura Ryan (13), and Tyler Kaseta (11) led Blessed Trinity. Abigail Taylor led Woodland with 18 points. Blessed Trinity improved to 11-10 overall and 5-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (2-17, 0-6) hosts Calhoun Tuesday night at 6 p.m. BLESSED TRINITY 64, WOODLAND BOYS 50 The Woodland boys dropped their seventh straight game Friday night at Blessed Trinity, 64-50. The Titans improved to 11-10 for the season and 4-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (5-14, 0-6) has a home game with Calhoun Tuesday night.

The Cass Lady Colonels and Colonels swept visiting Cartersville Friday night in Region 7-5A action. The Cass girls defeated Cartersville 57-26 and the Cass boys downed the Hurricanes 78-62. CASS GIRLS 57, CARTERSVILLE 26 The Lady Colonels led 21-3 after the opening eight minutes and cruised to a 57-26 region win over Cartersville. Cass led 44-10 at halftime and held a 52-16 lead through three quarters. Claire Davis paced Cass with a double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds). Haley Johnson followed with nine points and five rebounds. Miya Winston and Justice Bennett contributed eight points each. Keara McDaniel finished with five points. Zion Hayes and Olivia Woods chipped in three points apiece while Kiana McDaniel and Tamira Feanny added two each. Layne Callan led Cartersville with six points. Ansley Griffin, Taff Bradley, and Jakayah Draughn finished with five points each. AJ Davenport contributed three and Milena Bihm added two points. The loss drops the Lady Canes to 3-10 on the year and 1-5 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cartersville travels to Blessed Trinity Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start. Cass (18-3, 4-2) hosts Hiram Tuesday at 6 p.m. CASS BOYS 78, CARTERSVILLE 62 Cartersville took a 12-2 lead early Friday night but the host Colonels caught them by the end of the first period for a 14-14 tie. From there, Cass held a 26-23 lead by halftime and held a 50-42 advantage through three quarters on their way to a 16-point region win. Jelani Hames led the Colonels with 22 points. Jackson Hale finished with 13 and Kaden Baldwin contributed 12. Jakai Baldwin and Ethan McIntyre scored eight points each. Sacovie White chipped in seven. Jayden Foster had six points and Devin Henderson added two points for Cass. Kam Callahan led Cartersville with a game-high 23 points. Romo Pace followed with 15. Luke Gambill scored 13. Jaeden Scott and Monty Tolbert added six and five points, respectively. The Hurricanes (9-9, 2-4) play at Blessed Trinity Tuesday night. Cass (8-12, 2-4) hosts Hiram Tuesday.

The Excel Christian Academy boys stood toe-to-toe with visiting and 6th-ranked North Cobb Christian Thursday night in the first half but the visitors pulled away in the third quarter and held on for a 53-40 Region 7-A-Private win at The Church at Liberty Square. North Cobb Christian went the first 5:30 of the game without scoring but limited Excel as well to lead at the end of the opening period, 7-6. NCC led 18-16 at the intermission before outscoring ECA 21-10 in the third quarter. Albert Wilson led North Cobb Christian (13-5, 4-1) with 20 points. Josh Dixon followed with 17. Elijah Payne paced Excel with 16 points. Jakaden Barkley and Jacob Taylor chipped in 11 each. Excel (10-10, 1-5) steps out of region play Saturday night at The Weber School for a 7:30 p.m. tip. EXCEL CHRISTIAN MIDDLE SCHOOL WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE NAML TITLE For the second year in a row, Excel Middle School won the North Atlanta Middle School League championship with a 44-35 win Thursday night over Dominion Christian at The Church at Liberty Square. JoJo Payne led Excel Christian with 14 points. Ant Moreno added 12 for the Eagles.

The Cartersville boys soccer team improved to 2-0 Thursday night with a 1-0 home win over Douglas County. The victory came on the heels of Wednesday’s one-goal win at Chapel Hill. The Canes scored their goal in the ninth minute and peppered 26 shots on goal in the game. Melvin Velasquez scored for Cartersville off a crossing pass from Daniel Abeja. Senior goalkeeper Daniel Millan made several key saves and the Canes’ defense held on for the shutout. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2, DOUGLAS COUNTY 2 The Lady Canes scored twice in the game’s first 20 minutes of their season opener, but the visiting Lady Tigers tied the score by the intermission in an eventual 2-2 draw. The two teams played a scoreless second half. Hattie Beth Williams scored in the 16th minute for the Lady Canes. The goal came off an assist from Macy Nicklas. Abbey Craig added Cartersville’s second goal on a penalty kick minutes later to build a 2-0 lead.

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Baseball will induct four new members to the Mason Clements Wall of Fame on February 4 as part of the Evening with the All-Stars Event. The four members being inducted in the Wall of Fame are James Payne, Griffin Benedict, Sam Howard, and Mike Tidick. Sam Howard (2012-2014) A native of Cartersville, GA, Sam Howard played for the Eagles from 2012-2014 as a pitcher for Coach Rodney Hennon. Howard's development within the program would allow him to be an integral part of the 2014 team's 40-win season, Southern Conference Tournament Championship, and appearance in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. In that season, Howard was an integral part of a pitching staff that would finish the season with a 3.15 ERA, the 3rd best in Georgia Southern history and lowest staff ERA since 1978. He led all starters with a 2.35 ERA, a .230 Batting Average Against, and led the entire staff with 94 strikeouts. Howard turned in one of the most memorable starts in Eagle history in his final performance at the Tallahassee Regional against the number 5 national seed Florida State Seminoles. He would throw a complete game shutout, striking out 10 Seminoles and allowing only 2 hits. Following the 2014 season, Howard was selected in the third round by the Colorado Rockies. Sam would become the 16th player in program history to reach the big leagues as he made his Major League debut for the Rockies on June 10, 2018. In 2020, Howard became a member of the Pirates organization. Thus far, Howard has accumulated 7 wins, and 111 Strikeouts in 100 major league appearances as a relief pitcher.

The Cartersville High swim team defeated Cass in a head-to-head meet Tuesday night at the Adairsville pool as both squads wrapped up their 2021-22 campaigns. Cartersville won the combined team scores 119-103. The Lady Canes outdistanced the Lady Colonels 82-45 while the Cass boys outscored the Cartersville boys, 58-37. Cass led 24-12 after one quarter; 42-24 at halftime; and held a 66-46 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Cass had five players reach double figures led by Jayden Foster with 21 points. Ethan McIntyre and Kaden Baldwin contributed 13 each. Jakai Baldwin finished with 12 and Devin Henderson scored 10 points. Jelani Hames added eight for the Colonels. K.J. Although Adairsville outscored Sonoraville 17-11 in the final eight minutes the Lady Tigers finished three points short. Kayleigh Kelley and Diana Smith scored 13 points each to lead Sonoraville. GOLF BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS) … fired an opening round 2-under-par 70 Monday at the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, California to help the 13th-ranked Bulldogs to a team 9-under-par finish and a four shot, first round lead over 3rd-ranked Arizona State. Pepperdine and UCLA round out the top four with Texas and Washington tied for fifth through 18 holes. The tournament continues through Wednesday. Brumlow, who is tied for 7th individually, made six birdies on the day including four consecutive on holes 12 through 15. He suffered a double bogey on No. 10 and made two other bogeys on the day. MALLORY COOK — University of Montevallo (Fr., Adairsville HS) … in Birmingham Friday, Montevallo defeated Millsaps College 186-42 but lost to Birmingham-Southern College 169-88. Cook placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.72) and was the butterfly leg of the Falcons’ 200-yard medley relay team that placed fourth (1:59.34). She was also fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.23) and sixth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:32.12).
