The Georgia Highlands Chargers got back to their winning ways Tuesday earning a doubleheader sweep over Roane State CC at LakePoint. The two wins continued a current three-game win streak following a pair of losses over the weekend in the Chargers’ three-game series with Wabash Valley College. In Tuesday’s opener, GHC took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Raiders’ pitching stumbled. The Chargers posted seven more runs in the inning with just one hit to win 10-1. Five walks and three hit batsmen contributed to the Georgia Highlands run production. Max Kops had two hits. Ethan Anderson hit a two-run home run and finished with three RBIs. Ben Olson (2 RBIs), Parker Poteet (double, RBI), Caden Smith (RBI), and Zayd Brannigan (double, RBI) had the other hits. Jacob Ryan (6 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 8K) fanned eight and earned the pitching win. Garrett Sagro (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) closed out the final frame with a pair of strikeouts. In Game 2, the Chargers won in extra innings after coming from behind late in the game. Poteet led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk-off, solo home run to lift GHC, 7-6. Roane State led 6-4 heading to the bottom of the seventh but the Chargers tied the game with a two-run home run by David Smith. The blast scored Conner Todaro who had doubled earlier in the inning. Chandler Wood (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 3K) picked up the pitching win and was one of five Chargers’ hurlers utilized in the win. Baylor Akin (2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 2K), Hunter Goodwin (2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 2K), Zach Murray (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 2K), and Ryan Suppa (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) also took the mound for GHC. Smith had two hits including his homer and three RBIs. Ben Olson had two hits including a triple and two RBIs. Poteet had two hits including his game-winner and Todaro had two hits including his important seventh inning double. Max Kops had the other Georgia Highlands’ hit. Roane State slipped to 8-11 on the season with the two losses. Georgia Highlands (19-2) plays at Chattahoochee Valley Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Cass girls soccer team got a first half goal from Dayanara Pineda and made it stand up in a 1-0 win Tuesday night at home over Murray County. The loss dropped the Lady Indians to 1-5-1 on the season. Cass (2-6-1, 0-1) hosts Cartersville Friday in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. CASS BOYS 1, MURRAY COUNTY 1 The Cass boys played visiting Murray County to a 1-1 draw Tuesday night. The tie leaves Murray County with a 1-5-1 mark. Cass (6-3-1) hosts Cartersville Friday night at 7:30 p.m. NORTH MURRAY 2, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 1 The Lady Tigers led visiting North Murray 1-0 at halftime on Kaylee Jordan’s goal in the 42nd minute. The goal came off an assist from Emma Collins. The Lady Mountaineers responded in the second half, however, to send the game to overtime and picked up the Region 6-AAA win in overtime. North Murray improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in region play. Adairsville (5-2-1, 1-2) returns to action next Tuesday at Murray County. NORTH MURRAY 6, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 1 North Murray improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in Region 6-AAA with their 6-1 win Tuesday night at Adairsville. Adairsville (3-6, 1-2) travels to Murray County for another region match next Tuesday. HERITAGE-CATOOSA 6, WOODLAND GIRLS 0 The Lady Cats slipped to 4-3-2 following their non-region loss Tuesday night to the visiting Heritage Lady Generals. With the victory, Heritage remains unbeaten on the season at 5-0. Woodland returns to Region 7-5A action Friday at Hiram in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 7, SANDY CREEK 4 The Lady Canes improved to 2-5-1 with their win over Sandy Creek (1-4) Tuesday night in Tyrone. Cartersville plays at Cass Friday. The Cartersville tennis teams completed a second straight sweep of an opponent Tuesday. This time the Lady Canes and Hurricanes defeated Pepperell with identical 5-0 scores. With five runs in the fifth inning and six more in the seventh, the Woodland Wildcats utilized two big offensive innings Tuesday night to win at Rome 13-8. The Wildcats led 2-1 after on inning but the host Wolves scored six runs across the second through fourth innings to take a 7-2 lead. Woodland tied the game in the fifth and after a scoreless sixth frame, the Wildcats outscored Rome 6-1 in the seventh inning for a five-run non-region victory. Mason Williams had two hits and four RBIs for the Wildcats. Julian Wright followed with a pair of doubles and one RBI. Jakiyon Porter also had a two-hit game with an RBI. Ayden Ray contributed one hit and four RBIs. Chase Carson drove in a run and had one hit while Jackson Rutledge had a double for Woodland. Conner Stermer (3 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for the Wildcats by retiring the final nine outs. Nate Rosser (1 IP, 3ER, 0H, 6BB) and Coby Barrett (3 IP, 4R, 2ER, 5H, 0BB, 3K) also took the mound for Woodland. Rome slips to 3-5 on the season with the loss. CENTRAL-CARROLL 12, CASS 2 The Colonels managed only single runs in the third and fourth innings Tuesday night in a 12-2 loss at Central-Carroll. The host Lions led 7-0 after the first two innings and plated five more runs in the third on their way to a five-inning win. Aidan Cottingim (1 IP, 7R, 5ER, 3H, 3BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Cass. Hayden Cole (2.2 IP, 5R, 3ER, 7H, 1BB, 2K) and Chris Cabe (0.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) also pitched for the Colonels. Aidan Larkin had two hits for Cass including a double. Cole finished with a hit and one RBI. Wesley Collins added a triple and Jesiel Moctezuma contributed one hit. Central improved to 5-2. Cass (1-5) gets a rematch with the Lions at home Wednesday at 5:55 p.m. TRION 3, ADAIRSVILLE 1 A three-run second inning by the visiting Trion Bulldogs Tuesday night produced enough offense for their pitching in a 3-1 win at Adairsville. Trion pitchers Jase Mason and Brandon Dover combined to limit the Tigers to a single run while scattering five hits and three walks. The Trion pitching duo combined to strike out six. Jack Nelson (4 IP, 3ER, 3H, 4BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Adairsville. Peyton Bowen (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 3K) pitched in relief for the Tigers. Chris Roper had a double and one RBI for the Adairsville offense. Braden Powell also doubled. Bowen, Brenden Carroll and Luke Altizer added one hit each. Trion improved to 3-1 with their win. Adairsville (2-4) hosts a doubleheader with Temple Saturday at 12 noon.

The Cartersville High School varsity gymnastics team opened their competition season last Friday at Central High School placing fifth as a team in a field of 45 competitors. The event was won by Bremen High School with 105.70 points. The Canes totaled 88.95 points. Canes' junior Annaston Wilson earned a State Preliminary qualifying score on floor exercise with a score of 9.1. Her performance secures one step toward earning a spot in the GHSA State Preliminaries. Sophomore Jayla Byrd participated in her first varsity meet and scored well in vault and floor with an 8.25 and 8.4, respectively. Sophomore Karley Garrison added quality scores in each of her events. She placed third in All Around with an All Around qualifying score of 34. She also placed third in bars and floor with qualifying individual scores of 8.5 and 9.2. "We're looking at continuing to bank qualifying scores throughout the season and participate in the GHSA Gymnastics State Preliminaries in April," said Cartersville coach Kimberly Mosteller. "Athletes need at least three qualifying scores throughout the season All Around or in individual events. I'm confident the ladies will continue to impress the judges with their skill and expertise." The Cartersville gymnasts will face their next opponents on March 16th at Westminster in Atlanta.

Georgia Highlands College softball finished up their four game trip to the Sand Mountain Invitational Saturday by splitting games against Southern Union State and Chattanooga State. The Chargers defeated Southern Union 4-2 but lost to Chattanooga State 7-6. GHC also split games Friday defeating Snead State but falling to Pearl River. In Saturday’s win over Southern Union, three Chargers’ pitchers — Haley Robinson, Katie Traynor, and Maggie Schandera — combined to limit the Bison to just six hits. GHC led 3-1 through five innings and matched sixth inning singles runs for the 4-2 win. Hailey Cronic had three hits in the win including a triple and two RBIs. Robinson and Audrey Johnson followed with two hits and one RBI each. Taylor Justice tripled. Malone Aldridge and Haley Overton added one hit apiece. The Chargers rapped out 13 hits in the loss to Chattanooga State. Cronic compiled three hits including a double. Bradey Tharp (double), Robinson, and Allison Deweese (double) contributed two hits and one RBI each. Kyndal Brown (2 RBIs), Aldridge (RBI), Madison Dennis, and Ansley Todd added one hit apiece. Gracee Ellis pitched six innings in the one-run loss. She allowed five earned runs on eight hits with no walks and recorded one strikeout. Schandera (0.1 IP, 1ER, 3H) retired the final out. Georgia Highlands (6-12) will rematch with Chattanooga State Tuesday at home in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Stars Field in Cassville.

The Georgia Highlands Chargers split a doubleheader Saturday with Wabash Valley College (Illinois) to salvage one game in a three-game weekend series with the Warriors. The series was played at Pickens County High School in Jasper. Wabash Valley handed Georgia Highlands its first loss of the season Friday and won the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, 14-2. The Chargers responded and won the third game of the series, 9-6. Wabash Valley pounded out 16 hits in Game 1 Saturday after banging out 14 hits in the series opener. Chargers’ pitchers slowed down the Warrior offense in the series finale’, allowing just six hits. The Chargers’ Conner Perry (4 IP, 6R, 2ER, 4H, 5BB, 5K) and Cason Rich (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 1K) combined on the mound to allow only two earned runs in the GHC win. The two hurlers also combined for six strikeouts. Eric Moore (5 IP, 10R, 7ER, 13H, 0BB, 3K) and Bubba Luke (2 IP, 4R, 2ER, 3H, 2BB, 2K) were the Chargers’ pitchers. David Smith and Zayd Brannigan led the Georgia Highlands offense in Saturday’s doubleheader with three hits each. Smith hit a solo home run and added a double and two RBIs. Brannigan finished the day with a pair of RBIs. Mick Moody (4 RBIs) and Ben Olson had two hits. Ethan Anderson, Max Kops, Parker Poteet, and Caden Smith (RBI, sac fly) contributed one hit apiece. With Saturday’s doubleheader split, Wabash Valley is now 10-3 on the season. Georgia Highlands (17-2) returns to the diamond Tuesday at LakePoint against Roane State CC.

The Cass girls and boys track and field teams both finished fourth Saturday at the six-team Calhoun Yellow Jacket Invitational. Southeast Whitfield won the girls meet with 110 points. Host Calhoun was second with 105.5 followed by Heritage-Catoosa (101.5), Cass (99), Cedartown (98), and Northwest Whitfield (80). Cedartown won the boys competition with 180.3 points. Calhoun was runner-up with 121.5. Heritage-Catoosa (103.8) placed third followed by Cass (103), Southeast Whitfield (86.3), and Northwest Whitfield (61). Purple Hurricanes’ pitchers Caden Carroll and Drew Rothschild combined Saturday to shutout visiting Forsyth Central and the two combined for 14 strikeouts in the process. Carroll started on the mound. He scattered five hits and two walks over the first four innings and struck out seven. Rothschild did not allow a hit and struck out seven over the final three innings. He also walked two. The Cartersville offense took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and added four more runs in the third. Rothschild had two hits including a double and two RBIs. Curt Bonner also had a two hit game with a double. Hank Smith finished with a double and one RBI. Landon Cole contributed a base hit. Harrison Childers and Blake Sutton added one RBI each. The Bulldogs slipped to 0-4 on the year with their loss. Cartersville (3-1) will participate in the 2022 Perfect Game High School Showdown Thursday through Saturday in Hoover, Alabama. The Canes open pool play Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against Sparkman (Ala.) and will face Cherokee County (Ala.) that evening at 7 p.m. MARIETTA 6, WOODLAND 5 Woodland went to extra innings at Marietta Saturday, but came up short when the Blue Devils pushed across a walk-off run in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI bunt single. The two teams went to extra innings tied 5-5. Woodland scored a single run in the top of the first and added a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Marietta posted single runs in the first and fifth innings and scored three times in the sixth. Seven Wildcats had one hit each including Jacob Gravett (2 RBIs), Rowan Billings (RBI), Julian Wright (double), Chase Carson, Jakiyon Porter, Ayden Ray, and Conner Stermer. Ray (0.0 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB) was tagged with the pitching loss. ARMUCHEE 3, ADAIRSVILLE 1 In the first of two games of a doubleheader Saturday, Armuchee scored a run in the first and two more in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. As it turned out, that was enough as pitchers from both teams kept runs off the board from the third inning forward. Jack Rogers picked up the pitching win for Armuchee allowing just one earned run in six innings of work. He walked two and struck out six. Ethan Campbell worked a scoreless seventh to earn a save for the Indians. None of the three runs allowed by the Tigers were earned. Brendan Carroll (4.1 IP, 3R, 0ER, 4H, 1BB, 3K) and Braden Powell (2.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 4K) combined in the loss to strikeout seven. P.J. Weeks had two hits including a double at the top of the Tigers’ order. Tyler Driggers (RBI) and Chris Roper also had two hits for Adairsville. Dawson Craig added one hit. ADAIRSVILLE 1, ARMUCHEE 0 Adairsville’s Jack Whitley scattered four hits and a walk while fanning eight Saturday to shutout Armuchee, 1-0, in the second game of a doubleheader between the two teams. Meanwhile, the Tigers’ offense produced the game’s only run in the bottom of the fourth when Peyton Bowen singled home Braden Powell. Powell had reached after being hit by a pitch and moved to third on a throwing error by the Indians’ pitcher. With the doubleheader split, Armuchee is now 2-4 on the season. Adairsville (2-3) is scheduled to host Trion Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and has a home doubleheader next Saturday at 12 noon against Temple.

After opening the 2022 season with 16 straight wins, the Georgia Highlands Chargers lost Friday to visiting Wabash Valley College (Illinois), 20-7. The game was hosted by GHC at Pickens High School in Jasper. Georgia Highlands led 6-1 through three innings, but the Warriors scored 19 unanswered runs over the next five frames to run away with a win. The Chargers sent five pitchers to the mound in the loss. They yielded 17 earned runs on 14 hits and ten walks while combining for seven strikeouts. The Warriors hit a pair of home runs. Conner Todaro had three hits including a home run for Georgia Highlands. Zayd Brannigan and David Smith also homered in the loss. Wabash Valley improved to 9-2 on the season and Georgia Highlands slipped to 16-1. The two teams will continue their series Saturday with a doubleheader, also at Pickens High School.
