The Athletics started this week with a 38-40 record and in second place in the American League West, trailing the Seattle Mariners by 1-1/2 games. With three weeks remaining in the first-half schedule, Martin has appeared in nine games, covering just over 29 innings this season. He is 2-0 with a 3.99 ERA. Richmond (43-25) holds a 7-game lead over the Erie SeaWolves in the Eastern League Southwest Division as this week began. The Flying Squirrels host the Akron RubberDucks in a six-game series this Tuesday through Sunday.

ANTHONY SEIGLER — Boston Red Sox (MLB; 9th-year pro; Cartersville HS) … was recalled to the MLB Red Sox this past Saturday after playing four games earlier in the week at Triple-A Worcester. The 27-year-old started games on Saturday and Sunday for Boston in their series at the Seattle Mariners. Seigler was 1-for-8 at the plate from the leadoff spot and scored one run as the Red Sox won 5-1 on Saturday, but dropped a 3-1 decision on Sunday. In four games for the WooSox earlier in the week, the second baseman was 7-for-18, including one double, one walk, and one RBI. Boston entered the week with a 31-44 record and at the bottom of the American League East standings. They play three games in Denver with the Colorado Rockies on Monday through Wednesday, before returning to Fenway Park to host the division-leading New York Yankees on Thursday through Sunday.
INDEPENDENT PRO BASEBALL

MICAH EARWOOD — Sussex County Miners (Frontier League; 1st year pro; Southeastern University; Cartersville HS) … signed a contract June 16 with the Miners. The right-hand pitcher has appeared in two games and has allowed no earned runs and only one hit in four innings, facing 15 batters. He has issued three walks and recorded five strikeouts. Sussex County began this week with a 17-20 record and in third place behind the New York Boulders and the New Jersey Jackals in the Atlantic East Division. The Miners host the Schaumburg Boomers for three games this week and play three at the Trois-Rivieres Aigles. The Frontier League is the highest-profile independent professional baseball league in North America and is an official MLB Partner League. It is not part of the traditional MLB farm system (AAA, AA, High-A, etc.), but MLB recognizes and works with the league. Players in the Frontier League are not under contract to an MLB organization. Instead, they sign directly with Frontier League clubs. If an MLB team likes what it sees, it can purchase a player's contract and add him to its farm system.
