March 9, 2024 Georgia Highlands Softball lost both games of a doubleheader Thursday at Georgia Military College. The Bulldogs won the opening game 8-0 and won 14-6 in the second game. GMC scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning of Game 1 to take control and pitcher H Daughtry scattered three hits and three walks to earn a shutout win. The Bulldogs started quickly in Game 2 also. The hosts scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and added on over the final three frames to win in five innings. Cayden Warren had two hits and three RBIs in the two games for the Lady Chargers. Avrey Fisher and Ansley Farmer also had two hits in the doubleheader. Georgia Military evened their season record to 11-11. The Bulldogs start conference play 2-0. Georgia Highlands (3-18, 0-2) will host a GCAA conference doubleheader on Tuesday with East Georgia State CC.

March 8, 2024 The Woodland High School tennis teams played abbreviated matches with Model on Thursday with the Wildcats picking up three singles wins in a pair of team losses. Caleigh Williams and Kathryn Kovacic of the Woodland girls won Line 1 and Line 2 singles matches. Williams was a 6-4, 6-4 victor and Kovacic won on Line 2, 7-5, 6-0. Diana Librado fell at Line 3 singles, 4-6, 1-6 while Ellie Holt and Ella Bridges lost a Line 1 doubles match 3-6, 1-6. In boys' action, Dominic Ciavarro won 6-4, 6-4 in a Line 3 singles match. Peter Heins lost 1-6, 0-6 on Line 1 and Cadyn Wade dropped a narrow 2-6, 6-3, 3-10 decision on Line 2. Woodland hosts Cass on Tuesday.

March 7, 2024 Ayden Ray went three for four at the plate and drove in the Wildcats go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning Thursday night in a 7-3 win at Sonoraville. The Phoenix led 3-2 heading to the seventh inning before Woodland scored five runs to come from behind. Most of the damage came after there were two outs in the inning. Zach Lambert picked up the Wildcats’ pitching win by striking out 10 over the final five innings. Lambert did not allow a run or walk while scattering three hits. Ray (1.2 IP, 3ER, 3H, 4BB, 3K) started on the mound for Woodland. Ray’s three hits included a single in the fourth inning, a single in the sixth, and a go-ahead, two RBI double in the seventh. Mason Williams (RBI) had two hits. Jake Clowers and Cam Williams contributed one hit. Conner Lujan, Logan Bentley, Joshua Hicks, and Lucas Baker added one RBI. The loss dropped Sonoraville to a 4-4 record. Woodland (7-3) hosts Campbell on Saturday. CASS 8, CAMPBELL 4 The Colonels took a 5-1 lead through the first two innings Thursday night and then held on for an 8-4 non-region home victory over the Campbell Spartans. Chase Tatum drove in two runs with a double and Trenton Payne two more runs with a single to build a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Nic Wright made it 5-1 with an RBI single in the second inning. After Campbell narrowed the margin to 5-4, Wright drove in another run with a sacrifice fly and Cayden Roberts scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to make the score 7-4. Tatum walked to lead off the Colonels' sixth inning and eventually scored on another wild pitch. Jacob Johnson (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 5K) collected the Colonels’ pitching win in relief of starter Payne (3 IP, 4ER, 3H, 2BB, 3K). Tatum (1 IP, 0R, 1H) allowed one hit but worked a scoreless seventh inning on the mound. Tatum finished 3-for-3 with a walk, two doubles, and three runs scored. Payne also had three hits including a double and two RBIs. Wright (sac fly, two RBIs) and Jesiel Moctezuma (double) added one hit. Campbell slipped to 7-5 with their loss. Cass (6-4) plays at Coahulla Creek on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

March 6, 2024 The Class 5A 5th-ranked Woodland Wildcats improved to 6-0 Wednesday night with a 7-0 home win over the Coosa Eagles. Emilio Gonzalez, who also had four assists on the night, scored the Wildcats’ first goal in the 13th minute off an assist from Chris Sanchez. Sanchez followed with goals in the 23rd and 24th minutes to give Woodland a 3-0 lead at the intermission. Joel Alberto assisted on the first Sanchez score and Gonzalez provided the assist on the Wildcats’ third goal. In the second half, Woodland continued to dominate the Eagles. Juan Mendoza scored in the 55th minute. Hunter Limbaugh finished a Gonzalez corner kick for a goal in the 65th minute. Sanchez completed his hat trick with a third goal in the 70th minute and Marvin Morales got in the scoring column in the 78th minute with Connor Hernandez credited for the assist. Woodland keeper Miguel Pineda preserved the shutout with five saves. The Wildcats begin region play at home on Friday against Cartersville at 7:30 p.m. WOODLAND GIRLS 10, COOSA 0 The Woodland girls scored nine first-half goals Wednesday night, led 9-0 at the intermission, and closed out their home match with Coosa with a tenth goal in the 66th minute. Ansley Burns scored five goals. Maddie Weightman contributed three goals and one assist. Reagan Weightman scored one goal with three assists. Libby Morgan totaled one goal with two assists. Carlie Forman, Allie York, and Brionna Carver added one assist each. The Lady Eagles slipped to 0-4 with the loss. The Lady Cats (4-0) will host Cartersville on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

March 6, 2024 Strong pitching was the order of the day on Wednesday at Richard Bell Field as the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes outdueled the Rockmart Yellow Jackets, 2-0. The Canes’ win snapped a three-game losing skid coming off their trip to the Hoover, Alabama Perfect Game Showdown. Cartersville scored single runs in the first and fourth innings. Both runs came off the bat of Andrew Purdy. He tripled home a run in the first inning and smacked a solo home run to center field to lead off the fourth. Canes’ starting pitcher Logan Shrewsbury completed six innings on the mound and picked up the win. He struck out five while scattering six hits and a walk. Purdy was credited with a save by facing the minimum in the seventh inning. He fanned two. The Cartersville pitching performances spoiled a nice effort by Rockmart’s Hunter Atkins who allowed just two earned runs on five hits. Atkins recorded five strikeouts. Caleb Daniel had two hits and scored the Canes’ first-inning run. Cole Crawford had the other Cartersville base hit. Rockmart falls to 6-5 with their loss. Cartersville (8-3) hosts Adairsville on Friday at 5:55 p.m. CASS 5, CENTRAL-CARROLL 0 Three Cass pitchers combined to shutout the Central-Carroll Lions Wednesday evening in Carrollton, 5-0. Hunter Lovett made the pitching start and completed five innings to earn the win. He struck out five while scattering four hits and one walk. Jacob Johnson struck out one of three batters faced in the sixth inning and Justin Peace allowed two hits in the seventh but struck out two to complete the shutout. Devan Hutchinson had three hits for the Colonels and scored three times. Chase Tatum produced two doubles and drove in four runs. Jesiel Moctezuma also finished with two hits including one double. Lovett (RBI) and Johnson added one hit each. The loss dropped the Lions to 4-5 on the season. March 6, 2024 The Cass boys’ soccer team was unranked in Class 5A when the Score Atlanta polls were released at the beginning of the week, but that may change soon if the Colonels continue their recent success. Tuesday night Cass won a fierce battle with No. 1-ranked Dalton 1-0 at Cochran Stadium. The game’s only goal was scored in the second half by Christian Villela with about nine minutes remaining. The assist on the game-winner came from Camden Hillhouse. Cass fired 14 shots on goal compared to seven by the Catamounts although ball possession in the match was approximately 50/50. “Our defense did a stellar job all night with Mason Madrid, Grayson Dysart, and Xavi Pineda doing great work on the outside. The two centerbacks — Juan Romo and Chris Mederos — were also special. Chris made a fantastic clearance off the goal line when a corner kick header beat our keeper. The boys keep showing a willingness to go forward and play on their front foot each match.” The loss dropped Dalton to 6-2-1 on the season and 1-1 in Region 7-5A. Cass (7-1-1, 1-0) hosts Coahulla Creek in a non-region match on Thursday at 7 p.m. DALTON 10, CASS GIRLS 0 The Lady Cats blanked the Cass girls on Tuesday night at Cochran Stadium, 10-0. Dalton led 4-0 at the intermission and closed out the contest with six, second-half goals. Dalton improved to 4-3-1 on the season and 2-0 in Region 7-5A. Cass (3-4, 0-1) entertains the Lady Colts of Coahulla Creek on Thursday at 5 p.m. JOHNS CREEK 4, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 0 The Cartersville girls' soccer team was shut out Tuesday night at Johns Creek 4-0. The Lady Gladiators led 1-0 at halftime and added three second-half goals. Johns Creek improved to 6-3 on the season. The Lady Canes (4-4) begin Region 7-5A play on Friday at Woodland at 5:30 p.m. JOHNS CREEK 8, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 1 The host Gladiators of Johns Creek stayed unbeaten on their season Tuesday night with an 8-1 win over visiting Cartersville. March 5, 2024 The Adairsville girls' soccer team won its Region 6-AAA opener Tuesday night at home over Lafayette, 10-0. The Lady Tigers scored four goals in the first half and closed out the game with a tenth goal in the 77th minute. “All phases of the game were working tonight,” said Adairsville coach David Sexauer. “This was a full team effort. We had five girls to score and seven to assist. Our triangular passes, through balls, and communication were good. Carly Edwards controlled the midfield and made some clutch passes. Alivia Joslin also had a good night and showed off her speed.” Alexa Damer and Samantha Gough scored three goals for the Lady Tigers. Jordyn Hartline scored two goals. Joslin contributed two goals and one assist. Ella Edwards and Lizzie LeMay finished with one goal and two assists. Edwards, Jacksyn Elrod, and Gabi Bacerra added one assist. The Adairsville girls (6-2, 1-0) visit Ridgeland on Friday for their next region match.

The tournament was played on the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands GC. No. 1-ranked Oklahoma won the tournament by seven shots over No. 5 Pepperdine. SOFTBALL LAINEY BAKER — Union University (So., Woodland HS) … made pitching appearances this past Tuesday and Saturday at home against Trevecca Nazarene and at Valdosta State. She totaled 13 innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Baker struck out nine in a complete game 1-0 shutout of Trevecca and fanned 13 in a 4-3 loss at Valdosta State. The Eagles (7-12, 4-2) continue play in the invitational with four games on Friday and Saturday. CURT BONNER — LaGrange College (So., Cartersville HS) … started at catcher last Tuesday in an 11-7 win over Emory University at home. He also made one start and appeared in a second game this past weekend as the Panthers won two of three at home against Nichols College. Bonner was 3-for-10 and scored two runs in those games. PRESTON WELCHEL — Cumberland University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … in four home wins last weekend over Cleary University and a Monday win over Bryan College, Welchel was 5-for-14 at the plate including two home runs, two walks, four runs scored, and five RBIs. He was also hit twice by a pitch in the series. The Phoenix (12-7) entertain Briar Cliff University (Iowa) on Friday and Saturday in a three-game series. COHEN WILBANKS — Georgia Gwinnett College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-5 in two home starts last weekend against St. Francis (Ill.). He walked once and had one RBI with a sacrifice fly. The NAIA 2nd-ranked Grizzlies (16-2) have five home games this week against St. Francis, Fisher (Mass.), and Indiana Tech. JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … went 3-for-8 with two doubles and one RBI in losses last Tuesday at West Georgia and at home Saturday against Georgia College. The Jaguars (10-9, 2-1) went 2-2 last week and will host Emory & Henry College on Wednesday before visiting Lander University Friday through Sunday for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series.

March 4, 2024 Woodland scored 13 runs over the final three innings Monday night at Wheeler for a blowout win while Sonoraville rallied for six late runs at Adairsville to beat the Tigers. The Cass/Central-Carroll and Excel Christian/Cornerstone Prep games were postponed due to wet playing field conditions. Cass will play at Central on Tuesday. Excel is scheduled to host Oakwood Christian on Tuesday. WOODLAND 19, WHEELER 6 Woodland broke open a tight game Monday night in the late innings at Wheeler to win a battle of Wildcats, 19-6. Woodland led 6-4 through four innings before posting 13 runs over the final three frames to pull away. Woodland also outhit Wheeler 15 to 4 in the contest. Woodland also took advantage of nine walks and six Wheeler errors. Ayden Ray (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 5K) picked up the pitching win for Woodland in relief of starter Austin Daves (3 IP, 4R, 3ER, 4H, 3BB, 5K). JD Trail (0.1 IP, 2ER, 0H, 2BB, 1K) and Lucas Baker (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 2K) closed out the final two innings. Conner Lujan had three hits including a triple and four RBIs to pace the Woodland offense. Ray (double, three RBIs), Mason Williams (double, RBI), and Logan Bentley (RBI) finished with two hits. Joshua Hicks (two RBIs), Cam Williams (two RBIs), Jake Clowers (RBI), Brett Good, Luke Evans, and Ben Turcotte contributed one hit. Connor Stermer added one RBI. SONORAVILLE 11, ADAIRSVILLE 8 Sonoraville rallied for six runs in the top of the sixth inning on Monday night at Adairsville for a come-from-behind 11-8 win over the Tigers. Adairsville led 6-3 through two innings and 8-4 through four innings before the rally by the Phoenix. McCayden Hufstetler (2.2 IP, 6R, 4ER, 7H, 0BB, 4K) was the losing pitcher for Adairsville in middle relief. Ryan Farr (2.2 IP, 4ER, 5H, 4BB, 3K) started on the mound for the Tigers and Kaiden Coker (1.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 0BB, 2K) retired the final five outs for Adairsville. Peyton Bowen (two RBIs), Jarrett Scott (RBI), and Jack Nelson had two hits for the Tigers. Harrison Cole (RBI), and Coker had one hit. Braxton Ryan and Farr were credited with one RBI. Adairsville (4-3) plays at Sonoraville (4-3) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

March 3, 2024 The Georgia Highlands Chargers completed a four-game sweep of USC Salkehatchie on Sunday with a pair of 10-0 wins. The Chargers’ two wins on Saturday over the Indians were 11-2 and 6-2. Trip Dovale picked up his fifth pitching win for GHC on Saturday. Declan Dun closed out the seventh inning in the opener. Michael Sharman (3-1) (6.1 IP, 2ER, 4H, 0BB, 9K) worked into the seventh inning in Saturday’s second game. Hunter Ward (0.2 IP, 1K) finished the final two outs. Chandler Anderson (5 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 5K) blanked the Indians in the first game on Sunday. Pitchers Oliver Wood (5 IP, 0R, 5H, 0BB, 4K) and Landen Loyd (1 IP, 0R, 1K) combined to shut out USC-S in the final game of the series. The NJCAA 9th-ranked Chargers outscored the Indians 37-4 in the four-game series and outhit USC-S 49-16. Luke Orfi (two doubles, two RBIs) and Ali Banks (double, three RBIs) led the Chargers’ offense with eight hits in the series. Ryan Wideman had seven hits, including two home runs, three doubles, and six RBIs. Barrett Eldridge (four home runs, double, 12 RBIs) and Grayson Godbee (two doubles, sac fly, three RBIs) contributed six hits. Clay Wiesen (double, RBI) and Will Cawthon (RBI) added four hits in the series and Trevor Lovett (double) finished with three. The four losses dropped USC-Salkehatchee to 2-16 on the season. Georgia Highlands (22-2) hosts Cleveland State CC on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and has a four-game series with USC Lancaster on Saturday and Sunday.

March 3, 2024 Georgia Highlands College softball lost both games of a doubleheader on Saturday at Bevill State CC. The Lady Chargers lost the opener 8-0 and the second game was 12-0. Ally Graden and Cayden Warren (double) had two hits in the series. Hayden Joyner, Aliza Martinez, Cailey Barnett (double), Chloe Fowler (double), and Haylee Dishmon added one hit for the Chargers. Bevill State improved to 18-4. Georgia Highlands (3-16) begins conference play on Wednesday at Georgia Military College.
