- Bartow County Junior Little League baseball team finishes third at state tourney
The Bartow County Junior Little League (14U) baseball team finished third at the Georgia Junior Little League state tournament following an 11-1 loss to Toccoa Little League Tuesday night in Columbus. Bartow 14U finished 2-2 in the state tournament with wins over East Marietta and Peachtree City in earlier elimination games. The locals' other loss was to Peachtree City in the opening round. Nick Robinson went 2-⅓ innings on the mound and was tagged with the pitching loss. Kason Miller also pitched, working 3-⅔ innings. Connor Corbin had two hits for the locals. Zaylen Cochran, Landon Farmer, and Miller added one hit apiece. Toccoa will play Athens for the Junior League state championship Wednesday night. Athens needs just one win. Toccoa would need to win twice.
- Cartersville Little League 12U falls to Harris County
The Cartersville Little League 12U baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2023 State Tournament Tuesday night in Cobb County at the hands of Harris County Little League, 11-1. Harris County built a 4-0 lead before Cartersville scored its only run of the night in the bottom of the fourth. Harris County then added four runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth on the way to a 10-run decision. Cartersville managed only two hits — one each by Tyler Hickman and Jackson Crawford. Parker Huth drove in the lone Cartersville run. Brock Crawford (4 IP, 4R, 1ER, 2H, 4BB, 4K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Braxton Lemon (0.2 IP, 4ER, 2H, 1BB), William Groce (0.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 1K), and B H (1 IP, 3ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K) also pitched for Cartersville. Cartersville, now 2-1 in the double-elimination tournament, will face the Warner Robins/Smyrna winner (played late Tuesday) Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in an elimination game. Harris County, now 3-0, advances to the championship round needing just one more win to take the state title.
- Bartow County Junior Little League defeats Peachtree City to reach final three at state tourney
The Bartow County Junior Little League baseball team trailed 11-1 through going into the bottom of the fourth inning Monday night. Still, it rallied for eight runs in the fourth inning and six more in the sixth inning to defeat Peachtree City at the Georgia Junior Little League State Tournament in Columbus. The comeback win for Bartow County avenged a first-round loss last Saturday to PCLL. Landon Farmer pitched 3-⅓ innings with one strikeout to gather the pitching victory. Kasey Jacobs worked the other 3-⅔ on the bump. Zaylen Cochran and Jayce Little were both 2-for-4 at the plate for Bartow. Connor Corbin finished 2-for-5 with a double. Hilton Wade, Nick Robinson, and Clayton Wilkes added one hit each in the victory. Bartow 14U, now 2-1 at the state tournament, plays Toccoa Tuesday night at 5 p.m. in an elimination game with the winner advancing to the championship round against Athens. Athens is unbeaten in the state tournament and needs just one more win in the double-elimination event. The Bartow/Toccoa winner will need to beat Athens twice to win the title, The championship round — including the “if game” — is scheduled for Wednesday evening at Armour Road Park in Columbus.

Bartow County Junior Little League (14U) baseball defeated East Marietta 8-7 Sunday afternoon in Columbus to stay alive at the 2023 Georgia Little League Junior state tournament. Bartow, now 1-1 in the double-elimination tournament, advances to a rematch game with Peachtree City Monday at 5 p.m. Peachtree City beat Bartow 11-5 Saturday in the opening round, then lost to Toccoa Sunday afternoon. In the Bartow 14U win on Sunday, Zaylen Cochran was 2-for-4 at the plate and also picked up the pitching win with a pair of strikeouts in two innings on the mound. Clayton Wilkes was also 2-for-4 at the plate. Connor Corbin recorded eight strikeouts and pitched five innings for the locals. Corbin and Nick Robinson were 1-for-3 on offense. Monday’s Bartow/Peachtree City winner will play the Athens/Toccoa loser Tuesday night in another elimination game.

The Cartersville Little League 12U baseball team won its second straight game to begin the 2023 state tournament Sunday in Cobb County and is one of two unbeaten teams remaining in the tournament. Meanwhile, at the Southeast Regional for Intermediate (50/70) baseball, the Cartersville 13U team was eliminated by Richmond (Virginia) Little League. 2023 Georgia Little League (12U) State Tournament — Brinkley Park, Smyrna Cartersville 8, Peachtree City 3 Cartersville: Brock Crawford three hits including one double, one RBI; Tyler Hickman and Braxton Lemon two hits, one RBI each; William Groce one hit, two RBIs; Noah Leffew one hit, one RBI; Henry Hardy one hit; Jackson Crawford one RBI. Pitching: Tyler Hickman (4.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 5BB, 11K); Parker Huth (1 IP, 0R, 0H 0BB); Noah Leffew (0.2 IP, 3ER, 2H, 2BB) NEXT: Cartersville (2-0 in the double-elimination tournament) advances to Round 3 to play the only other undefeated team — Harris County Little League — Tuesday at 6 p.m. Both teams have guaranteed no worse than a third-place finish. 2023 Intermediate 50/70 Baseball (13U) Southeast Region — Kernersville, North Carolina Virginia 8, Cartersville 3 Cartersville: Caden McMullin one triple, one RBI; Easton Lee and Aiden Turner one hit, one RBI each; River Wade, Cam Kachinsky, Steven Tumlin, and Blake Genrich one hit apiece. - Local golfers compete at 102nd Georgia Amateur Golf Championship
Cartersville Country Club members R.B. Clyburn of Cartersville and Lee Bowman of Marietta made the 36-hole cut at the 102nd Georgia Amateur Championship played this past Thursday through Sunday at Rivermont Golf Club in Johns Creek. University of South Florida’s Jake Peacock of Milton won the championship with rounds of 68-68-71-71—278 (6-under-par). He edged John Daniel Culbreth of Thomasville by one shot and Connor Macmillan of Canton by three. Clyburn tied for 25th place on the 6,955-yard, par-70 layout with rounds of 70-74-72-75— 291. Bowman tied for 47th firing rounds of 71-76-72-79—298. Two other local golfers — Laine Frazier of Adairsville and Chanc Willis of Cartersville — qualified for the 144-player field at the Georgia Amateur but failed to make the 36-hole cut of 8-over-par. The field was narrowed to the low 60 players and ties after 36 holes.

A pair of local Little League baseball teams begin state tournament play this weekend while the Cartersville 50/70 Intermediate baseball team begins play at the Southeast Regional. The traditional 12U Little League Baseball Georgia state tournament begins Saturday at Brinkley Park in Smyrna with Cartersville Little League in action as the District 1 champ. In Columbus, Bartow County Junior Little League (14U) is the District 1 champion at the five-team state tournament that opens Saturday morning. Meanwhile in Kernersville, North Carolina, Cartersville Little League (13U) is the Georgia representative at the 50/70 Intermediate Southeast Regional. MASON BARNETT — Quad Cities River Bandits (KC Royals High A affiliate; 2nd-yr. pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a start last Wednesday at the Cedar Rapids Kernels and pitched six innings in the Bandits’ 3-2 loss. The right handed hurler was the pitcher of record and gave up three earned runs on five hits with no walks. He did hit one batter and struck out eight. The loss leaves the 22-year-old with a 2-5 record for the season in 13 starts and 64 innings. Barnett has a 3.80 ERA with 76 strikeouts. Quad Cities (37-44 overall) was 2-4 last week in their series at Cedar Rapids. The River Bandits (5-10 in the second half of the Midwest League’s West Division standings) return to action Friday at home beginning a three-game series with the South Bend Cubs. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; 6th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … has been on the Patriots’ injured list since June 29. For the season, Seigler has a .173 batting average with one homer and 16 RBIs in 133 official at-bats. He has appeared in 41 games utilized as both catcher and designated hitter. The Patriots (47-32 overall) were 1-4 last week in a home series against the Reading Fightin’ Phils. They also had a suspended game this past Sunday with Reading that will be completed on August 15. The score was tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth when it was halted. Somerset (5-6 second half; Eastern League Northeast Division) returns to action Friday at the Binghamton Rumble Ponies playing a three-game series through Sunday.
