  • Canes race past Woodland on homecoming

Scott Barkley / CanesAthletics.com Cartersville's Maddox Davis races toward the end zone with an escort from teammates Davis Waddell (0), Tyon Coe (28) and Athens Davenport (35). Madoxx Davis averaged 21 yards per catch alongside a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as Cartersville built a 30-0 lead in the first quarter on the way to a 44-7 win over Woodland on Sept. 19.   “He’s a special player, and somebody that we’re going to continue to be creative with,” said head coach Conor Foster. “We try to move him around on offense, and he’s playing a ton on defense and special teams. He creates a lot of matchup issues and is such a great competitor. You watch him and you’ll see how he never gives up on a play.” Braylon Hill caught a screen pass from QB Nate Russell and scored a 55-yard touchdown late in the first quarter vs. Woodland. The Canes were already ahead 14-0 when a high snap on a punt attempt brought two more points. On Woodland’s ensuing free kick, Davis settled under the ball at his own 30. Moving up the middle of the field, he broke left for a few steps before ripping across to the right sideline untouched for the score and a 23-0 lead.  The sophomore finished with four catches for 83 yards. He’s second on the team to Georgia-bound Brady Marchese in receptions (16 to 19) and yards (261 to 375).  Marchese has missed a few games. That goes for center Langston Hogg as well, whose absence has led to a reshuffled offensive line and Adam Reed moving from right tackle to snapping the ball. Woodland QB Sammy Ray looks downfield. “I’m just so proud of his leadership,” Foster said of Reed, a senior. “We’ve had three new starters over the last couple of weeks, and Adam has played a different position, so it’s almost like having four new starters. He’s been our senior leader in that group, and I’ve been super proud not only of his effort, but also of his leadership in meetings and ability to stay calm and teach and lead these young guys through some chaotic and exciting times. He’s been the anchor of that group, and I’m really proud of him.” The greatest compliment to Reed may be how the casual fan has barely noticed the change at center.  “Langston’s a great player and one of my best friends in the world. But when somebody goes down, it’s next man up, and I’m comfortable in every position on the line,” said Reed. “I’ve played center before, so I’m confident in my ability to shift throughout the line.” Two early touchdown runs by Tyon Coe – a seven-yarder up the middle and another from 23 yards out – gave the Canes a 14-0 lead. After the safety and Madoxx’s return, Nate Russell hit Braylon Hill on a quick screen for a 55-yard score and 30-0 advantage with 1:06 to play in the opening quarter.  Elijah Peeks (54) tackles Woodland's Solomon James in Cartersville's 44-7 win on Friday. A three-yard touchdown run by Tripp Chatmon and one by PJ Richards from five yards stretched the lead to 44-0 at halftime.  The Canes’ defense, primarily of backups in the second half, stopped two Woodland drives on Cooper Melvin’s interception and AJ Townsend’s fumble recovery. The Wildcats would get on the board, though, with a three-yard touchdown run by Solomon James at 1:06 left in the third quarter.  Cartersville improves to 6-0 and 2-0 in 4A Region 7. After an off week, the Canes travel to Cass on Oct. 3. The Colonels (5-1 and 2-0) are averaging over 36 points per game and drummed Cedartown on Friday night, 44-17. Woodland (0-4, 0-1) will host Cass this Friday, Sept. 26. Canes' RB Tyon Coe (28) breaks for one of his first-quarter touchdowns, chased by Woodland's Preston Sorrells.

  • Colonels outlast Hornets in Region 7-AAAA nail-biter

September 13, 2025 Cass running back Kalil Charles looks for daylight. The Cass Colonels won their fourth straight game Friday night at Hiram High School, surviving a late threat by the Hornets for a 28-21 victory that came down to the final play. The Colonels struck first, methodically marching 65 yards in 13 plays over nearly seven minutes. Quarterback Brodie McWhorter connected with Chase Tatum for a 3-yard touchdown pass, and Anthony Quijada’s extra point gave Cass a 7-0 lead with 5:07 left in the first quarter. Walker Sims protects quarterback Brodie McWhorter as he looks downfield. Hiram’s defense responded in the second quarter, as Amari Linley intercepted McWhorter and returned it 70 yards to the Cass 12-yard line. But the Colonels’ defense held firm, forcing a missed 28-yard field goal attempt. Later, Cass’ Demarcus Ballenger picked off a Caleb Carmichael pass in the back corner of the end zone, preserving the 7-0 lead at halftime. The Hornets roared back after receiving the second-half kickoff, tying the game with a 76-yard, seven-play drive capped by Dylan Maina’s 44-yard touchdown run. Joshua Corvera’s extra point knotted the score at 7-7 with 8:31 left in the third quarter. Cass regained the lead early in the fourth quarter. A 70-yard drive that started with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter ended with Charles’ 12-yard touchdown scamper, putting the Colonels ahead 14-7 with 11:54 left in the game. Cass head coach Steve Gates speaks with his assistant coaches on the sideline at Hiram. Hiram answered quickly, needing just four plays to cover 60 yards, with Linley’s 20-yard touchdown run tying the game at 14-14 with 9:41 remaining. The Colonels took control late with a lengthy drive and added a touchdown off a Hornets' turnover. McWhorter orchestrated an 80-yard, 12-play drive, culminating in a 3-yard keeper to give Cass a 21-14 lead with 4:04 remaining. After Hiram fumbled on their next possession, Tremon Buckner recovered at the Hornets’ 20-yard line, setting up McWhorter’s 14-yard touchdown run with 1:57 to go, extending the Colonels' lead to 28-14. Hiram refused to quit, as Carmichael’s 7-yard touchdown run capped a 9-play, 67-yard drive with two seconds left, cutting the deficit to 28-21. Jeremy Barrett heads downfield in the Colonels' 28-21 win Friday night at Hiram. The Hornets’ ensuing onside kick, which ricocheted off a Cass player and was recovered by the Hornets ten yards away, somehow took only six-tenths of a second off the clock. That left Hiram with one final chance with 1.4 seconds remaining. A dramatic and high-arcing “Hail Mary” pass found a Hiram receiver inside the 10-yard line, but Cass defenders swarmed to bring him down as time expired, sealing the Colonels’ victory. Cass (4-1, 1-0) heads home to face the Cedartown Bulldogs next Friday in their first home game of the season. Hiram (1-4, 0-1) takes a bye week before hosting the Dalton Catamounts on September 26.

  • Canes roll at Dalton, 45-14

Scott Barkley / CanesAthletics.com PHOTO: Cooper Melvin hauls in a 41-yard pass from Nate Russell against Dalton on Sept. 12. Dalton had no answer for Braylon Hill and Tripp Chatmon, as the duo combined for 161 yards and two rushing touchdowns on just 12 carries Friday night in the Canes’ 45-14 win over the Catamounts.  Cartersville defenders swarm to the ball. Chatmon averaged nearly 14 yards per rush. Hill was right behind at 13 per clip to go with a 40-yard touchdown catch for a team-leading 118 all-purpose yards. The Canes finished with 320 total yards of offense. Tyon Coe contributed 14 yards on two carries, but found the end zone on defense in taking an interception 104 yards to the house.  Dalton’s talented young quarterback, sophomore Caine Woods, put CHS behind for the first time this season after leading the Catamounts on an opening drive that covered 81 yards over 16 plays. It ended in a 17-yard touchdown toss and a 7-0 lead with only 2:36 to play in the first period.  The lead lasted 59 seconds.  Braylon Hill After an onside kick attempt that went out of bounds gave the Canes the ball at their 37, Hill took a handoff on 3rd-and-1. The senior raced through the middle and broke left for the 54-yard score that tied the game after Ramsey Rowell’s kick with 1:45 left in the opening quarter.  Dalton wouldn’t find the end zone again until midway through the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the Canes continued to score.  After forcing a Catamounts punt, CHS needed seven plays to cover 56 yards. Nate Russell’s 21-yard rainbow to Cole Crawford down the left sideline with 8:31 left in the half gave the Canes a 14-7 lead.  Dalton moved the ball into Canes territory on their next drive, but Kaiden Kent lasered in on a fourth-down pass to knock the ball away and give it back to the CHS offense. After a couple of motion penalties put Cartersville in a 2nd-and-20 hole, Russell found Cooper Melvin for a 41-yard strike. Two plays later, it was Davis Waddell’s turn as the senior tight end collected a 19-yard scoring toss from Russell for the 21-7 advantage.  Russell had a methodical night, going 7-of-10 for 127 yards and three touchdowns.  Dalton drove to the CHS 13 in the closing seconds of the first half, but Grayson Warmack blocked a field goal attempt to maintain the lead. Jared Cooley (52) and Kylen Pope (25) make a stop at Dalton. The Canes received the ball out of the half and started fast. Hill broke off an apparent 65-yard score on the first play from scrimmage, but it was called back for a penalty. After a defensive penalty put CHS at their 41, Chatmon took a handoff around right end and – aided by a crushing block by receiver KB Wilkey – galloped for the 59-yard score and 28-7 lead. It appeared Chatmon had a defensive score moments later. On 4th-and-3 from the Canes 28, a low snap skittered to near midfield before Chatmon scooped it up and ran into the end zone.  But a block in the back nullified the score. Nevertheless, the Canes added to their advantage on Rowell’s 40-yard field goal with 6:54 left in the third quarter.  Hill touched the ball on all five plays of the next drive. Three carries covered 15 yards to the Dalton 40. Hill then took a short pass from Russell and worked his way through the defense to give CHS a 38-7 lead.  Dalton responded by moving the ball to Cartersville’s ten. On second down, though, Woods, who finished with 213 yards on the night, rolled right and threw to the corner. Coe squared up on the throw in the end zone and weaved through defenders near the sideline before breaking back to the middle.  He started cramping with 30 yards to go, he said later. But the junior pushed through and finished the 104-yard pick-six, unofficially a school record.  A late Dalton score secured the final 45-14 victory. The Canes move to 5-0 on the season and will welcome Woodland into Weinman Stadium next Friday, Sept. 19.
