- Colonels outlast Hornets in Region 7-AAAA nail-biter
September 13, 2025 Cass running back Kalil Charles looks for daylight. The Cass Colonels won their fourth straight game Friday night at Hiram High School, surviving a late threat by the Hornets for a 28-21 victory that came down to the final play. The Colonels struck first, methodically marching 65 yards in 13 plays over nearly seven minutes. Quarterback Brodie McWhorter connected with Chase Tatum for a 3-yard touchdown pass, and Anthony Quijada’s extra point gave Cass a 7-0 lead with 5:07 left in the first quarter. Walker Sims protects quarterback Brodie McWhorter as he looks downfield. Hiram’s defense responded in the second quarter, as Amari Linley intercepted McWhorter and returned it 70 yards to the Cass 12-yard line. But the Colonels’ defense held firm, forcing a missed 28-yard field goal attempt. Later, Cass’ Demarcus Ballenger picked off a Caleb Carmichael pass in the back corner of the end zone, preserving the 7-0 lead at halftime. The Hornets roared back after receiving the second-half kickoff, tying the game with a 76-yard, seven-play drive capped by Dylan Maina’s 44-yard touchdown run. Joshua Corvera’s extra point knotted the score at 7-7 with 8:31 left in the third quarter. Cass regained the lead early in the fourth quarter. A 70-yard drive that started with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter ended with Charles’ 12-yard touchdown scamper, putting the Colonels ahead 14-7 with 11:54 left in the game. Cass head coach Steve Gates speaks with his assistant coaches on the sideline at Hiram. Hiram answered quickly, needing just four plays to cover 60 yards, with Linley’s 20-yard touchdown run tying the game at 14-14 with 9:41 remaining. The Colonels took control late with a lengthy drive and added a touchdown off a Hornets' turnover. McWhorter orchestrated an 80-yard, 12-play drive, culminating in a 3-yard keeper to give Cass a 21-14 lead with 4:04 remaining. After Hiram fumbled on their next possession, Tremon Buckner recovered at the Hornets’ 20-yard line, setting up McWhorter’s 14-yard touchdown run with 1:57 to go, extending the Colonels' lead to 28-14. Hiram refused to quit, as Carmichael’s 7-yard touchdown run capped a 9-play, 67-yard drive with two seconds left, cutting the deficit to 28-21. Jeremy Barrett heads downfield in the Colonels' 28-21 win Friday night at Hiram. The Hornets’ ensuing onside kick, which ricocheted off a Cass player and was recovered by the Hornets ten yards away, somehow took only six-tenths of a second off the clock. That left Hiram with one final chance with 1.4 seconds remaining. A dramatic and high-arcing “Hail Mary” pass found a Hiram receiver inside the 10-yard line, but Cass defenders swarmed to bring him down as time expired, sealing the Colonels’ victory. Cass (4-1, 1-0) heads home to face the Cedartown Bulldogs next Friday in their first home game of the season. Hiram (1-4, 0-1) takes a bye week before hosting the Dalton Catamounts on September 26.
- Canes roll at Dalton, 45-14
Scott Barkley / CanesAthletics.com PHOTO: Cooper Melvin hauls in a 41-yard pass from Nate Russell against Dalton on Sept. 12. Dalton had no answer for Braylon Hill and Tripp Chatmon, as the duo combined for 161 yards and two rushing touchdowns on just 12 carries Friday night in the Canes’ 45-14 win over the Catamounts. Cartersville defenders swarm to the ball. Chatmon averaged nearly 14 yards per rush. Hill was right behind at 13 per clip to go with a 40-yard touchdown catch for a team-leading 118 all-purpose yards. The Canes finished with 320 total yards of offense. Tyon Coe contributed 14 yards on two carries, but found the end zone on defense in taking an interception 104 yards to the house. Dalton’s talented young quarterback, sophomore Caine Woods, put CHS behind for the first time this season after leading the Catamounts on an opening drive that covered 81 yards over 16 plays. It ended in a 17-yard touchdown toss and a 7-0 lead with only 2:36 to play in the first period. The lead lasted 59 seconds. Braylon Hill After an onside kick attempt that went out of bounds gave the Canes the ball at their 37, Hill took a handoff on 3rd-and-1. The senior raced through the middle and broke left for the 54-yard score that tied the game after Ramsey Rowell’s kick with 1:45 left in the opening quarter. Dalton wouldn’t find the end zone again until midway through the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the Canes continued to score. After forcing a Catamounts punt, CHS needed seven plays to cover 56 yards. Nate Russell’s 21-yard rainbow to Cole Crawford down the left sideline with 8:31 left in the half gave the Canes a 14-7 lead. Dalton moved the ball into Canes territory on their next drive, but Kaiden Kent lasered in on a fourth-down pass to knock the ball away and give it back to the CHS offense. After a couple of motion penalties put Cartersville in a 2nd-and-20 hole, Russell found Cooper Melvin for a 41-yard strike. Two plays later, it was Davis Waddell’s turn as the senior tight end collected a 19-yard scoring toss from Russell for the 21-7 advantage. Russell had a methodical night, going 7-of-10 for 127 yards and three touchdowns. Dalton drove to the CHS 13 in the closing seconds of the first half, but Grayson Warmack blocked a field goal attempt to maintain the lead. Jared Cooley (52) and Kylen Pope (25) make a stop at Dalton. The Canes received the ball out of the half and started fast. Hill broke off an apparent 65-yard score on the first play from scrimmage, but it was called back for a penalty. After a defensive penalty put CHS at their 41, Chatmon took a handoff around right end and – aided by a crushing block by receiver KB Wilkey – galloped for the 59-yard score and 28-7 lead. It appeared Chatmon had a defensive score moments later. On 4th-and-3 from the Canes 28, a low snap skittered to near midfield before Chatmon scooped it up and ran into the end zone. But a block in the back nullified the score. Nevertheless, the Canes added to their advantage on Rowell’s 40-yard field goal with 6:54 left in the third quarter. Hill touched the ball on all five plays of the next drive. Three carries covered 15 yards to the Dalton 40. Hill then took a short pass from Russell and worked his way through the defense to give CHS a 38-7 lead. Dalton responded by moving the ball to Cartersville’s ten. On second down, though, Woods, who finished with 213 yards on the night, rolled right and threw to the corner. Coe squared up on the throw in the end zone and weaved through defenders near the sideline before breaking back to the middle. He started cramping with 30 yards to go, he said later. But the junior pushed through and finished the 104-yard pick-six, unofficially a school record. A late Dalton score secured the final 45-14 victory. The Canes move to 5-0 on the season and will welcome Woodland into Weinman Stadium next Friday, Sept. 19.

- Canes hold back Calhoun, 38-35, for (very) early Saturday win
September 7, 2025 Scott Barkley / CanesAthletics.com The Canes' defense makes a stop during their 38-35 victory over Calhoun. Ramsey Rowell’s 24-yard field goal was the difference in a marathon night at Weinman Stadium, which didn’t conclude until just before 1 a.m. with Cartersville’s 38-35 win over Calhoun. A two-hour-and-13-minute weather delay pushed the start to near when other schools were close to finishing their games. Add the extra time allotted for being Georgia Public Broadcasting’s Game of the Week, and Friday’s game easily stretched into Saturday morning. Fans were staring at overtime until Rowell’s kick went through with only 20 seconds remaining. Even so, the Yellow Jackets drove deep enough for a final prayer to fall to the turf near the goal line. The game felt in hand with less than five minutes to play in the third quarter, as the Canes dismantled a 14-14 tie with three unanswered touchdowns, securing a 35-14 lead. It felt even more the case after Calhoun went three-and-out on their next drive. The Canes' offensive line clears a path for running back Braylon Hill. Closing out the third quarter and entering the opening seconds of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets put together a 70-yard drive over six plays to cut the lead to 35-21. A big Madoxx Davis kickoff return started the Canes in Calhoun territory for a drive that reached inside the ten, but Rowell pushed a 24-yard field goal attempt, keeping the difference to two scores. The visitors responded with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that trimmed the lead to 35-28 on a one-yard plunge with less than five minutes to play. After recovering an onside kick, Calhoun quickly covered 42 yards in four plays. Hudson Chadwick’s 27-yard touchdown, along with the PAT at 12:39 a.m., also tied the game with 3:48 to play. The Canes responded with their most crucial possession of the night. It didn’t start easily. Needing a yard on fourth down from his team’s own 41, Cole Crawford took a direct snap and gained the marker while taking a wallop from Chadwick, now at linebacker. On the next play, Brady Marchese circled back to take in Nate Russell’s pass near the sideline for a 21-yard gain to the Calhoun 34. The offense got as close as the ten, but Russell’s third-down throw didn’t quite reach Davis in the corner of the end zone, setting up Rowell’s game-winning field goal. Marchese earned GPB Player of the Game honors, finishing with 177 yards and two touchdowns on nine receptions. Russell had 294 yards on 15-of-28 passing to go with his two scoring tosses to Marchese. Both offenses clicked early. The Canes took the opening kick and on the first play from scrimmage immediately moved into Calhoun territory thanks to Russell’s 36-yard toss to Marchese. Two brutal Tripp Chatmo runs covered the final 19 yards for the touchdown and an early 7-0 lead after Rowell’s kick. Calhoun responded with a methodical 13-play, 58-yard scoring drive of their own, which included two fourth-down conversions, to tie the contest. On the ensuing kickoff, Davis returned the ball 78 yards for an apparent touchdown, but for the second time in as many weeks, his score was called back for a penalty. Nevertheless, the Canes started at Calhoun’s 25 and on the sixth play Russell connected with Marchese on a quick pass before the senior ran in for the 15-yard touchdown and 14-7 lead. Calhoun tied the score less than two minutes into the second quarter. On the Canes’ final drive of the half, a third-and-long throw from Russell to Tyon Coe covered 18 yards, placing them in the red zone. Coe then carried the ball down to the one before freshman Athens Davenport bulled in for the 21-14 lead after Rowell’s kick with 33 seconds remaining. After forcing a Yellow Jacket punt to open the second half, the Canes’ third play found the end zone when Marchese took another quick pass from Russell, spun to his right, and hit the jets for a 51-yard touchdown. Cartersville extended its lead to 35-14 with 4:46 remaining in the third quarter after Braylon Hill's two-yard touchdown run. That play was set up by Davis’ physical 25-yard catch-and-run to the goal line. Cartersville moves to 4-0 on the season and will travel next Friday, Sept. 12, to Dalton. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30.
- Colonels win high-octane showdown at North Cobb
September 6, 2025 Brodie McWhorter The Cass Colonels outlasted the North Cobb Warriors in a thrilling 35-27 victory Friday night, showcasing quality quarterback play and capitalizing on critical North Cobb turnovers at Emory Sewell Stadium in Acworth. The game was an exciting quarterback duel, with Mississippi State commit Brodie McWhorter of Cass and Notre Dame commit Teddy Jarrard of North Cobb trading blows. McWhorter completed 14 of 19 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns while adding 31 yards on the ground in nine carries. Jarrard kept pace, tossing three touchdown passes, but North Cobb's four fumbles—compared to the Colonels' clean sheet—proved costly. North Cobb defeated Cass last year at Cochran Stadium 43-14, but the Colonels turned the tables on Friday. "They were faster than us last year; they were more physical than us last year, the score showed that," said Cass head coach Steve Gates on Saturday. "We preached all week to the kids that if we can match their speed, play as physically as they do, and do both of those with better discipline, we would be in the game in the fourth quarter. Ironically, that’s precisely what happened." Cass struck first with 0:21 left in the first quarter. McWhorter capped a 7-play, 70-yard drive with a 43-yard touchdown pass to Zeke Helton, and Anthony Quijada's first of five extra points on the night made it 7-0. North Cobb, showing their resilience, responded in the second quarter. Jarrard connected with Sebastian Easley on a 6-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7 after Michael Hill's PAT. The Colonels regained the lead at 3:08 in the second when McWhorter hit Jah Anderson for a 38-yard touchdown, finishing an 80-yard drive. Moments later, disaster struck for North Cobb. Jarrard fumbled on a handoff attempt, and Cass's defensive lineman Tremon Buckner scooped it up and ran it back for a 19-yard 'scoop and score,' pushing the lead to 21-7. North Cobb clawed back just before halftime, with Jarrard finding Jace Caldwell for a 14-yard touchdown pass as time expired, making it 21-14 at the break. The second half opened with another North Cobb miscue—a fumble on the kickoff, recovered by Cass at the Warriors' 32-yard line. McWhorter capitalized, hitting Kennesaw State commit Chase Tatum for a 5-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 28-14. North Cobb answered with a 6-yard touchdown run by Zach Belyeu, but a missed PAT kept the score at 28-20. In the fourth quarter, Cass's ground game took over. Kalil Charles, who carried the ball 23 times for 92 yards in the game and had one reception for five yards, capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive that chewed up 6:30 off the clock with a 7-yard touchdown run, pushing the score to 35-20. Jarrard and Caldwell connected again for a 9-yard Warriors' touchdown to cut the deficit to 35-27, but North Cobb's hopes faded after turning the ball over on downs in the final two minutes. Cass sealed the win with two kneel-downs. "Our coaches had a great game plan," added Gates. "They made some incredible halftime adjustments, and our kids played fearlessly. I am super proud of the players, coaches, and community." North Cobb's four fumbles, including the critical kickoff miscue, were too much to overcome despite Jarrard's heroics. For Cass, McWhorter's accuracy and the team's balanced attack with their late-game rushing success proved decisive. Buckner's defensive touchdown and Charles's late rushing score helped seal the win. Anderson caught five passes for 117 yards and one touchdown. Slocum had eight receptions for 22 yards, and Naz Fleurine added a five-yard reception. Tatum's five punts for Cass averaged just over 40 yards, including a 52-yarder, with no returns. The Colonels (3-1) move forward with momentum and travel to Hiram next Friday to open play in Region 7-AAAA. The Warriors (2-2) look to clean up their ball-security issues in what promises to be a competitive season. North Cobb hosts Walton on Friday in their Region 5-AAAAAA opener.
