Bartow County Little League 12U defeated Cartersville Little League twice Tuesday night at Hamilton Crossing Park to win the Georgia Little League District 1 championship. Bartow County won the first game Tuesday night 10-0 and captured the district title with a 9-4 win in the nightcap. Cartersville entered the double-elimination championship round undefeated with weekend wins over Rockmart (10-1) and Bartow County (4-3 in eight innings). Entering Tuesday night, Bartow had a pair of wins over Dalton (6-4 and 16-1) along with Sunday’s loss to Cartersville. The District 1 title sends Bartow County 12U to the eight-team, double-elimination Georgia Little League State Tournament July 16-21. The state tournament will be hosted by Cartersville Little League at Hicks Park in Atco. BARTOW COUNTY 10, CARTERSVILLE 0 Matt Zander tossed a complete game shutout in Tuesday night’s first game as Bartow County blanked Cartersville, 10-0, in five innings. Zander scattered three hits and only one walk while striking out eleven. After a scoreless first inning, Bartow took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Bartow then added four runs in the third, three in the fourth, and one more run in the fifth inning to wrap up the win. Gunner Pullen had three hits to pace the Bartow offense. Bartow posted four runs in the top of the third to take a 7-3 lead and added two more in the fifth. Cartersville pushed a final run across in the bottom of the fourth. Blaine Groce earned the pitching win for Bartow County by working 5-1/3 innings. He scattered six hits and two walks allowing just two earned runs. Groce struck out six. Cade McCorkle retired the final two outs on the mound for Bartow including one strikeout. Huck Garlin had three hits to lead the Bartow County attack. Noah Janssen followed with two hits. MOSBY — Albany Patroons (5th yr. pro; The Basketball League; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS) … led by Mosby’s 36 points, six rebounds, and two assists Monday night, the Albany Patroons won a decisive third game of The Basketball League’s East Regional finals series with the Kokomo Bobcats to advance to the league championship series. The Patroons will open the best-of-three finals on the road Wednesday night at the Shreveport Mavericks with Game 2 (and Game 3 if necessary) in Albany this weekend. In the first two games of the East Regional finals, Mosby scored 26 points in a 123-110 loss last Thursday and added 18 points in a 106-89 win Sunday. Cartersville won the series opener Saturday at Hamilton Crossing Park, 3-2. Bartow County won the second game of the series 6-3 Sunday afternoon but Cartersville bounced back to win the deciding third game, 14-7, to claim the District 1 banner. The Cartersville Little League 8-10 year old baseball tournament team won the Georgia District 1 championship Thursday night with an 8-7 extra inning victory over Bartow County at Hamilton Crossing Park. Cartersville led 4-3 after one inning and had a 5-3 lead before Bartow County scored three runs in the bottom of the third to grab a 6-5 advantage. Cartersville moved ahead 7-6 in the top of the sixth but Bartow sent the game to extra innings with a run in the bottom of the frame. After keeping Bartow off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, Cartersville took advantage of three straight walks and pushed across the winning run with a groundout. Cartersville reliever Drew Morris worked a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the pitching victory. He struck out one. Brock Morris worked the first six innings on the mound for Cartersville and fanned four. Cade Rogan led the Cartersville offense with three hits. Anthony Hunt and Easton Stephens followed with two hits each. Alec Higgins and Jack McCurry added one base hit apiece. Declan Parker had three hits for Bartow County. As a result, Bartow Green finished fourth in the 12-team GRPA state tournament at Riverbend Park in Dalton. In the win over St. Simons, Jake Nida had two hits including a double. Cole Baker also finished with two hits. Hank Earwood had the walkoff hit in extra innings. Cooper Adcock contributed a double. Brody Morrow, Titus Childers, and Camden Forsyth added one hit apiece. Bartow Green finished the tournament 3-2 with a win over Crisp County and two wins over St. Simons. The losses came to West Jackson and Jefferson. The Georgia Little League Baseball District 1 8-10 year old tournament got underway Monday night at Hamilton Crossing Park with two local teams picking up first round wins. Cartersville defeated Rockmart 9-6 and Bartow County topped Cedartown 11-1. In Cartersville’s victory, Jack Mroczko led the offense with a pair of hits. Anthony Hunt, Brock Morris, Jack McCurry, Cade Rogan, and Jack Thompson added one hit apiece. Bartow was paced by Declan Parker and Jaxon Durham with three hits each. Jackson Watts followed with two hits. Parker Rampley, Knox Janssen, Brantley Collum, and Easton Miller added one hit for Bartow County. Cartersville and Bartow square off Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Hamilton Crossing Park with the winner advancing to the district championship round Thursday. The loser must play an elimination game Wednesday against the Rockmart/Cedartown survivor. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … in his only appearance last week, the southpaw struck out two but gave up a two-run home run in the sixth inning of an eventual 10-4 win at the Worcester Red Sox. Howard induced a pop out and struck out a batter before the third batter he faced in the inning reached on an error. The home run followed before fanning the next. As a result, both runs were unearned. Howard (0-1) has a 3.75 ERA in 13 MiLB games this season and 12 innings pitched. He has recorded 18 strikeouts. Toledo (34-30) is in fourth place in the International League’s West Division. The Mud Hens host the Scranton/Wilke-Barre RailRiders this week in a six game series. CONNOR JUSTUS — Charleston (WV) Dirty Birds (7th yr. pro; Independent Atlantic League; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS) … in five games last week at the Gastonia Honey Hunters, the shortstop was 6-for-16 at the plate with a pair of walks, three runs scored, and five RBIs raising his season batting average to .305. The Dirty Birds (23-30) are currently 16-1/2 games behind Gastonia in the South Division of the Atlantic League. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (5th yr. pro; High Class-A New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS) … playing in three games last week at the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the switch hitting catcher was 4-for-11 with a double, one home run, a pair of walks, and three RBIs. The 23-year-old is now hitting .316 in June and has lifted his season average to .277 with 7 home runs, 27 runs batted in, and a .451 on base percentage. Seigler has also stolen six bases. Hudson Valley (32-31) is currently in third place in the South Atlantic League’s North Division and trails Aberdeen by 11 games in the standings. The Renegades play a six game series this week at Winstron-Salem. PRO BASKETBALL A.J. MOSBY — Albany Patroons (5th yr. pro; The Basketball League; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS) … in the best-of-three East Conference finals of The Basketball League playoffs, the Patroons swept the visiting Huntsville Hurricanes last Thursday and Friday. Albany won 123-104 and 110-108 to capture the series and move on to face the Kokomo Bobkats in the league semifinals (East v. Midwest). Mosby totaled 36 points, 13 assists, 12 rebounds, and one assist in the two-game sweep.
