September 26, 2023 Cartersville volleyball defeated visiting Cass Tuesday night 25-7 and 25-12 in two straight sets. Tennessee Abernathy had four kills and four assists for Cartersville. Addison Marisko also added four kills. Ailee England finished with three kills and two blocks. Aubree Barrett contributed five assists and three aces. Aly Dunn and Riley Jarrett totaled three aces each while Mckenzie Wilkie added 12 digs. Cass falls to 4-25-1 overall and 1-4 in region play. ADAIRSVILLE SPLITS REGION MATCHES The Lady Tigers defeated Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 25-17, 25-20 Tuesday night at home but lost to Coahulla Creek 27-25, 25-16 in region play. In the loss to Coahulla Creek, Adysen Garvey and Jordan Hartline finished with four kills and one block each. Cara Harp had three aces and one assist. Jayna Wilson contributed three blocks and Sherry Wells added 15 digs. In the win over LFO, Hartline had a game-high five kills followed by four kills by Garvey. Addie Pearson had three kills and nine digs and Jenna Claire Hendley also had three kills. Harp served three aces and Jayna Wilson totaled eight digs. September 26, 2023 The host Lady Tigers won a back-and-forth tilt with Ridgeland Tuesday night, 9-8, and celebrated their 2023 seniors on the evening. Adairsville led 1-0 early, tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning, and trailed the rest of the way until scoring four times in the bottom of the seventh for a dramatic come-from-behind win. Chelsea Bates (1.2 IP, 2ER, 1H, 4BB, 2K), Ashlyn Carlton (3.1 IP, 3ER, 6H, 2BB), Madison Baker (0.2 IP, 3ER, 4H, 0BB, 1K), and Jordan Clay (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) shared the pitching duties for the Tigers with Clay picking up the win. Adairsville quarterback Jonathan Gough threw for three touchdowns and ran for one more as the Tigers held on for a 28-26 win Friday night at Ringgold. Adairsville led 28-10 through three quarters but Ringgold rallied for a pair of fourth-quarter scores and had a chance to tie the game with a two-point conversion with less than a minute to play. The Adairsville defense rose to the occasion on the two-point conversion run attempt, however, and ended Ringgold’s rally. Ringgold took a 7-0 lead toward the end of the first quarter. Kishaun Taylor returned an Adairsville punt 52 yards for a touchdown with 0:57 remaining. Manuel Saldana booted the PAT kick. Adairsville responded with back-to-back scores to move ahead, 14-7. Gough scored on a 5-yard run with 11:11 remaining in the second period to cap a 5-play, 56-yard drive. On the next Adairsville possession, Gough connected with Noah Matthews for a 40-yard touchdown pass. The play finished off an 80-yard Adairsville drive that took seven plays. Cooper Souders, who was 4-for-4 on PATs for the night, booted both extra points. Ringgold drove deep into Adairsville territory just before the half but settled for a 20-yard field goal by Saldana to make the score 14-10 with 1:29 left in the second quarter. The kick culminated an 8-play, 46-yard drive. Adairsville countered with a late touchdown to build on their lead. A 17-yard touchdown pass from Gough to Tre Winters capped a seven-play, 69-yard drive with 0:12 before the intermission. The touchdown gave Adairsvile a 21-10 lead at halftime. Adairsville added a fourth touchdown early in the third quarter. Gough found an open Matthews for a 15-yard scoring strike with 10:24 left in the third quarter to make the score 28-10. The third Gough TD pass of the evening completed a 58-yard Adairsville drive that included six plays. Ringgold roared back, however, and had a chance to tie at the end. The host, blue-and-gold Tigers, drove 68 yards late in the third quarter to narrow Adairsville’s lead to 28-17. The eight-play scoring drive was capped with a 23-yard touchdown run by quarterback Garrett Edgar. Following a 22-yard field goal by Ringgold’s Saldana with 9:35 left in the game, the hosts drove for another score in the game’s waning minutes. Alijah Bradberry scored for Ringgold on a four-yard run with 0:59 left to narrow Adairsville’s lead to 28-26 and set up a dramatic finish. Needing a two-point conversion to tie, Ringgold tried another run by Bradberry but the Adairsville defense stopped him and clung to a two-point lead. Ringgold attempted an onside kick but Adairsville was able to recover the football and finished out the game with a pair of victory formation snaps. The loss dropped Ringgold to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Region 6-AAA, Adairsville (3-2, 2-0) hosts LaFayette on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ~~ Larry Gardner contributed to this story. CASS 40, M.L. KING 0 The Colonels scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns Friday night and added four more in the second quarter to build a 40-0 lead by the intermission as they cruised over the visiting M.L. King Lions. The 40-point halftime lead created a “running clock” second half and the Colonels were able to get much of their roster into the game in the final two periods. Cass quarterback Brodie McWhorter threw four touchdown passes to Sacovie White and running back Devin Henderson added two touchdown runs in the non-region victory. It took Cass only three plays to get on the scoreboard. After the Colonels kicked off and stopped the Lions on their initial possession, the hosts started their first offensive possession at their 48-yard line. Devin Henderson finished off the 52-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown run. Austin McArthur, who made 4-of-5 PAT kicks on the night, added the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 9:28 remaining in the opening period. On the next Cass possession, McWhorter found White for the first of their four scoring strikes. The 45-yard pass play capped a 63-yard scoring drive and put the Colonels up 14-0 with 5:32 to go in the first quarter. Henderson added a two-yard touchdown run on the next Cass possession giving the Colonels a 21-0 advantage with 11:10 left in the first half. The final three Cass touchdowns in the second quarter were all McWhorter to White pass plays. A 6-yard missile in traffic made the score 27-0 with 9:00 left in the quarter. A 12-yarder to the front pylon on the ensuing possession made the score 33-0 with 6:45 remaining and a 10-yarder with 0:08 left in the half finished off a two-minute drill drive that covered 52 yards. MLK fell to 1-4 on the season with the loss. Cass (3-2) opens play in Region 7-5A next Friday night at home against county-rival Woodland. OSBORNE 14, WOODLAND 0 Osborne scored both touchdowns in the second quarter to defeat Woodland Friday night at Wildcats’ Stadium, 14-0. Cardinals’ quarterback Edward Burr completed a 39-yard touchdown pass to Kris Davis with 7:58 remaining in the second period and Osborne recovered a blocked Woodland punt in the end zone with 2:30 left before the half. The Adairsville volleyball team had a tough go of it Saturday at the Southeast Whitfield Raider Rally. The Lady Tigers were winless on the day and won only one set in four matches. In a 25-23, 25-15 loss to Northwest Whitfield, Jordyn Hartline and Jenna Claire Hendley had four kills each. Addie Pearson finished with six assists and eight digs while Sherry Wells had 14 digs. Against Christian Heritage, the Tigers won the second set 25-19 but lost the opening set 25-18 and the third set 15-13. Cara Harp contributed four aces, nine assists, and nine digs. Pearson finished with five kills and 15 digs. Hendley totaled six kills and two blocks. Wells added 15 digs. In a 26-24, 25-12 loss to Chattooga, Pearson had four kills, seven assists, eight digs, and one block. Hendley finished with five kills and one block. Wells made 10 digs and Hartline chipped in four kills. In a narrow 25-22, 25-23 loss to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, Pearson contributed six kills, nine digs, four assists, and one block. Hartline had three aces and three kills. Jayna Wilson added three kills. Adairsville (8-19, 1-2 Region 6-AAA) hosts Coahulla Creek and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on Tuesday in region matches.

The cross country teams from Cartersville, Woodland, and Cass competed Friday in the 9th annual Wingfoot XC Classic at Sam Smith Park in Cartersville. The event is annually hosted in Cartersville by the Atlanta Track Club and attracts dozens of high school teams from across the Southeast. Malachi Vosburgh of Cartersville competed as an individual in the Boys Championship race and finished 17th in 15:42. The championship division included 194 runners and was won by Tommy Latham of Marist in 15:02. In the 1A Division Boys race, Cartersville placed tenth of 39 teams without Vosburgh at the top of their order. The Canes' top runners were Barrett Stepp (16:49), Kaleb Lanier (17:15), Hayden Mitchell (17:37), Carson Robinson (17:37), and Tripp Chitwood (18:07). The Woodland boys were 17th in the same division. The top Wildcat runners were Landon McSwain (16:43), Juan Mendoza (17:02), Andy Forsyth (17:12), Knox Koontz (18:40), and Will Parker (19:35). The Cass boys competed in the Classic Division and finished 24th of 34 teams. The top runners for the Colonels were Critton Gearhart (17:30), Leonardo Galeana (19:15), Adam Brush (19:33), Benny Flores (19:52), and Sawyer Foy (20:19). The Woodland girls finished 24th of 30 teams in the Girls 1A Division. Top runners for the Lady Cats were Miranda Pelow (21:41), Olivia Berry (22:27), Addison Brown (22:54), Abby George (23:35), and Lily Hiott (24:57). The Cartersville girls were 30th in the same division. The score remained that way until the Tigers’ productive seventh. Hall allowed an earned run in the bottom of the seventh but limited Cass to six hits and one walk. The Calhoun hurler struck out seven. Emma Gibson (4 IP, 6ER, 11H, 2BB, 1K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Lily Powell (3 IP, 0R, 0H) worked three innings in the circle for Cass. Lyla West and Breanna Baker had three hits each to lead the Calhoun offense. Avery Greeson homered. Harlee Thomason had two hits and one RBI for Cass. Darianna Sosa, Cayce Brown (double), Payton Mize, and Erin Clinard added one hit apiece. The Yellow Jackets improved to 13-7-1 overall and 10-1 in region play. Cass (7-14, 2-8 Region 7-5A) plays at Trion on Saturday at 11 a.m. and returns to region play Tuesday at Dalton at 5:30 p.m. NORTH COBB 14, CARTERSVILLE 7 The Lady Canes challenged undefeated Class 7A North Cobb Thursday night but lost on the Warriors’ home field, 14-7. North Cobb led 8-0 after three innings but Cartersville scored five times in the fourth inning to narrow the margin to 8-5. The Warriors would later add three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away. Jordan Bishop had three hits including a double and two RBIs for Cartersville. Layne Callan finished with two hits including a double and one RBI. Addie Burns also had two hits for the Hurricanes. Kennedy Crenshaw hit a two-run homer. Erin McCrary, Allana Williams, and Reese Dumas added one hit apiece. Zoie Shiflett (4 IP, 10R, 7ER, 11H, 2BB, 1K) and Ansleigh Tilley (2 IP, 4ER, 2H, 3BB) North Cobb improved to 16-0 with the victory. September 21, 2023 Woodland volleyball split a pair of matches at Cedartown Thursday night. The Lady Cats lost to the host Bulldogs 14-25, 13-25 but defeated Paulding County, 25-17, 25-19. Kendall Condon totaled 13 assists, 13 digs, and five kills in the two matches. Anastyn Jones finished with 10 digs, four kills, and three aces. Lili Womack had 13 digs, six assists, and four aces. Megan Schultz contributed six kills and five digs. Kiera Pedigo added five kills. On Tuesday, Woodland (11-20, 2-2) plays at home against 5th-ranked Dalton and Carrollton. TIGERS FALL AT SONORAVILLE Adairsville dropped a best-of-five match at Sonoraville Thursday night in straight sets, 25-20, 25-10, and 25-18. Addie Pearson had eight assists and four kills for the Tigers. Jordan Hartline and Jayna Wilson both contributed five kills. Makenzie Harris finished with four kills while Sherry Wells added 17 digs.

Cass pitcher Lily Powell tossed a four-inning, one-hit shutout and the Colonels pounded out thirteen hits in a 12-0 home win Wednesday night over the Rome Wolves. Powell struck out six and did not issue a walk while collecting the pitching victory. Powell (triple) and Erin Clinard both finished with three hits and two RBIs. Braelyn Franklin (RBI) followed with two hits. Cayce Brown (double, sac fly, three RBIs), Harlee Thomason, Reese Howard, Darianna Sosa (triple), and KK Evans contributed one hit apiece. Emma Gibson added one RBI. The loss dropped Rome to 3-12 on the season. Cass (7-13, 2-8) hosts Calhoun Thursday at 5 p.m. and travels to Trion on Saturday for an 11 a.m. start.

September 19, 2023 Woodland won a pair of Region 7-5A matches Tuesday night at Calhoun taking down Cass 25-12, 25-16 and Hiram 25-23, 20-25, 15-10. Kendall Condon totaled 24 assists, 11 digs, four kills, and three aces in the two matches. Megan Schultz had 11 digs, three kills, and three aces. Lili Womack finished with 10 digs and six aces. Anastyn Jones contributed 12 kills. Kiera Pedigo had eight kills, and Katie Clowers added eight aces. The Lady Cats (10-19, 2-2) play at Cedartown on Thursday and will also face Paulding County. CARTERSVILLE DROPS TWO MATCHES IN DALTON The 8th-ranked Lady Canes dropped a pair of straight sets matches Tuesday night in Dalton, falling to East Hamilton (Tennessee) and 6th-ranked Dalton. Cartersville (20-11, 2-1 Region 7-5A) plays at Hiram and will also face Cass in more region matches next Tuesday (Sept. 26). ADAIRSVILLE GOES 1-1 TUESDAY IN REGION MATCHES Adairsville volleyball lost the first set with Ridgeland Tuesday night but fought back to win the final two sets 25-12 and 15-8 to defeat the Panthers in a Region 6-AAA match. The Tigers lost their match, however, with host Ringgold 25-12, 25-14. In the win over Ridgeland, Addie Pearson, Jayna Wilson, and Makenzie Harris combined for 17 kills. Cara Harp had five aces. Harris added two blocks and Sherry Wells contributed 10 digs and six assists. In the Adairsville loss to Ringgold, Pearson had three kills and Wells added 11 digs. The Lady Tigers (8-14, 1-2) play a best-of-five match at Sonoraville Thursday night prior to participating in the Raider Rally in Dalton on Saturday.

Pitcher Haley Collum (5 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1BB, 4K) collected the pitching victory. Jordan Hammonds had three hits for Woodland. Mackenzie Araya (double, RBI), Ashlynn Baines (RBI), and Peyton Dorn followed with two hits each. Bailey Ryan (two RBIs), Alana Carnes (triple, two RBIs), and Elizabeth Hartsfield (RBI) contributed one hit each. Kamryn Smith added one RBI. CALHOUN 8, CARTERSVILLE 2 Calhoun broke open an otherwise tight game Tuesday night by scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull away for an 8-2 win over visiting Cartersville. Calhoun added two more runs in the sixth inning to build an 8-1 advantage. Cartersville tacked on a single run in the seventh. Zoie Shiflett (4.2 IP, 5R, 3ER, 4H, 3BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Cartersville. LaKiaya Banks (1.1 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H, 2BB) also pitched for the Hurricanes. Reese Dumas had two hits for Cartersville. Erin McCrary and Jordan Bishop added one hit each for the Canes. Layne Callan drove in one of the runs with a sacrifice fly. No. 7 Calhoun improved to 12-7-1 overall and 9-1 in Region 7-5A. Cartersville (12-6, 8-2) was ranked No. 9 this week and will visit North Cobb Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for a non-region game.
